If we can understand what makes these gatherings effective and memorable, then we can reframe and redirect them to benefit everyone, host and guest alike. Parker defines a gathering as three or more people who come together for a specific purpose. When we understand why we gather, she says - to acknowledge, to learn, to challenge, to change - we learn how to organize gatherings that are relevant and memorable.

Although software has become easier to build, launching and scaling new products and services remains difficult. Start-ups face daunting challenges entering the technology ecosystem, including stiff competition, copycats, and ineffective marketing channels. Teams launching new products must consider the advantages of “the network effect”, where a product or service’s value increases as more users engage with it. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other tech giants utilize network effects, and most tech products incorporate them.

Why is Red Bull so popular, though everyone—everyone!—hates the taste? Humans are, in a word, irrational, basing decisions as much on subtle external signals (that little blue can) as on objective qualities (flavor, price, quality). The surrounding world, meanwhile, is irreducibly complex and random. This means future success can’t be projected on any accounting spreadsheet. To strike gold, you must master the dark art and curious science of conjuring irresistible ideas: alchemy.

If there's one lesson Oren Klaff has learned over decades of pitching, presenting, and closing long-shot, high-stakes deals, it's that people are sick of being marketed and sold to. Most of all, they hate being told what to think. The more you push them, the more they resist. What people love, however, is coming up with a great idea on their own, even if it's the idea you were guiding them to have all along. Often, the only way to get someone to sign is to make them feel like they're smarter than you.

Publisher's Summary
Harness the power of communities, both inside and outside of your organization, to drive value and revenue, activate your employees’ and customers’ talents, and create a highly engaged, loyal customer base.
What if you discovered a blueprint that could grow your brand’s reputation and loyalty, dramatically reduce customer service issues, produce content and technology, and cement a powerful, lasting relationship between you and your customers?
Communities have been a popular topic since the rise of the internet and social media, but few companies have consistently harnessed their power, driven tangible value, and effectively measured their return on investment (ROI) like:
- Salesforce.com has seen tremendous results with their community network of over two million members advocating for, supporting, and integrating Salesforce.com products
- Star Citizen used Kickstarter to raise over $150 million to build their new video game and a community of over two million players
- Red Hat collaborated with their community to build industry-leading technology, which led to a $34 billion acquisition by IBM
- Companies such as PayPal, Facebook, Bosch, Microsoft, CapitalOne, and Google have also built communities inside their organizations, which have fostered innovation, broken down silos, and helped their organizations to operate more efficiently and collaboratively
People Powered helps C-suite leaders, founders, marketers, customer advocates, and community leaders gain a competitive advantage by answering the following questions:
- What is the key value proposition of building a community?
- What kind of community do we need and how do we build and integrate it into our organization?
- How do we incentivize and encourage people to get involved, build reliable growth, and keep community members engaged?
- How do we develop authentic, productive relationships with community members both online and in person?
- How do we get departmental buy-in, hire effectively, and create consistent, reliable community engagement skills in our organization? What are the strategic and tactical pitfalls and roadblocks we need to avoid?
- How do we make sure that our community continues to grow with us - and more importantly, how do we make sure that we continue to grow with them?
People Powered pulls together over 20 years of pragmatic experience into a clear, simple methodology and blueprint to not just answer these questions but deliver results. It also includes contributions from industry leaders including Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Emmy-award winning actor), Peter H. Diamandis (founder of XPRIZE, Singularity University), Jim Zemlin (executive director, The Linux Foundation), Mike Shinoda (cofounder, Linkin Park), Jim Whitehurst (CEO, Red Hat), and more.
Don’t get left behind - become an industry trailblazer and ensure your company’s longevity by tapping in to the most dynamic force both outside and inside your organization: the people.

We're better together. Here's how...
I've been blessed to have had a front row seat to the Jono Bacon Show, for the last 12 years, having worked along side him at Canonical on Ubuntu, and watched as he's help a number of other organizations in very similar ways. Jono's approach to human connections is unique in the world today. He carries with him a singular capability to generate more capacity, from disparate groups of people, than anyone would think possible. I've seen it first hand time and again. In 'People Powered', Jono shares his methodologies, in clear prose, enumerated lists, and actionable recommendations. As a product management executive, this book is particularly applicable, in our quest to create products that delight and passionate communities thereof. Despite how much I thought I knew about Jono's philosophies and practices, I still walked away from this book with new insights from every chapter. It's a must read, for anyone interested in creating something bigger than themselves.

A refreshing insight into the advantages of community!
Whatever your line of work you will find it is anchored to a community of sorts be it planned or accidental. Take a closer look at your community and you will see a set of community values which help sustain its continuance. Now take a close look at organisations (communities) around you that have ultimately withered on the vine and you will see a direct correlation between organisational failure and its failure to maintain and strengthen its community values.
Following the guidance this book offers - you will be better equipped to identify your own organisations community values and be able to contribute positively to its future and wellbeing.
