She does Britain's dirty work, but this time she needs help. Beatrix Rose, meet John Milton....
Beatrix Rose has a knack for making the British government's problems go away. When the assassin is sent to Venezuela to track down a missing scientist, she meets a contact who knows the lay of the land: none other than John Milton.
As the state-sanctioned assassin and the special forces soldier team up in South America, they'll do more than capture a missing scientist. They'll discover a secret that will change Beatrix's life forever....
Phoenix is a short story that unites two landmark thriller characters in a single tale. If you like ruthless assassins, fast-moving plots and Jack Reacher-style action, then you'll love USA Today best-selling author Mark Dawson's latest short.

Good Origin Story
This was a pretty good story that ends up explaining something key in the Beatrix Rose series. The only problem I had was at times during conversations between Beatrix and others, it was difficult to distinguish who was who (meaning I was unsure who was speaking). Overall, a very solid story and effort by Dawson and Slavin.

Beatrix Rose & John Milton - the early years
This short story is an absolute must listen for Mark Dawson fans who have listened to the Beatrix Rose series. It also includes the first meeting of Beatrix Rose and John Milton before Milton joined Group Fifteen. In addition it includes the first mention of Isabella Rose. This short story fills in the backgrounds of all three major characters of author Mark Dawson.

Great short story
“Phoenix” by Mark Dawson features a British sanctioned assassin who quietly makes political problems go away. I do love a female assassin story!
Beatrix Rose is sent to Venezuela to find a missing scientist. There, she partners with another assassin, John Milton.
Short story even shorter, in her search for the missing scientists, she finds a secret that will alter Beatrix’s life.
This is a fast-moving story, only 2 hours. It’s perfect for a long drive. I listened to the audible production narrated by Jane Slavin.

Fully Fleshed Out Story Preferred
Though the narrator was very good, the story itself was too short and left too many questions unanswered. I'd read the mixed reviews on Dawson's characters so I've been slow to really get into his writing. I think this is the second novella...first one was about Milton. I like that there's lots of action and a strong female lead with a heart. However, the choice to give no "real" details about whether "Phoenix" is a what or a who has the feel of a serial comic book or TV series. The saying "always leave them wanting" seems to be the author's Rule of Thumb, yet because these are rightfully compared to a Jack Reacher style character, it's truly not necessary. Fully fleshing out the story would actually benefit this particular concept. People like me will continue to read because we like the characters. I think I'll wait until I can get the entire series for 1 credit. Now that would be exciting!

Don't blink, you'll miss it!
This is a pretty good, very short novella. I thought it was an introduction to Beatrix Rose, an operator in Group 15, who is Number 1. This is before John Milton had joined Group 15, eventually becoming Number 1. Beatrix’s assignment is to go to Venezuala to find and question a scientist who skipped out on the CIA. She will meet Milton there, who is familiar with the area, and assist her. Things never go as planned but Beatrix handles everything like the pro she is. She also unexpectantly remedies a personal issue involving her husband. Great conclusion to a well-written short story. Jane Slavin’s performance was very good.

Early Milton story poorly performed
Why oh why did they not get a better narrator for this book? Apart from mispronunciations like fastidious she makes Milton sound like a limp softly spoken wet rag on a week old martini hangover.
Sorry but there are much better female narrators who could have really brought this to life if they didn’t want to go with David Thorpe!
Thorpe would’ve done a much better Beatrix Rose too.
Sorry to be harsh but I’m not a fan.

Naration is worse than terrible
1 hour in and I have only a basic knowledge of the story as my brain switches off due to the dull whining narration.
I will resist the urge to stick a sharp pencil thru my ear drums and listen to the end only out of respect to the author and due to my natural stubbornness.
This is auditory Hell on earth.
