Publisher's Summary

Discover the darkness that lurks around every corner in the latest instalment of Peter James’s award-winning detective series, which is now a major ITV programme starring John Simm as Roy Grace.

Harry and Freya, an ordinary couple, dreamed for years of finding something priceless buried amongst the tat in a car boot sale.

It was a dream they knew in their hearts would never come true—until the day it did…

They buy the drab portrait for a few pounds, for its beautiful frame, planning to cut the painting out. Then studying it back at home there seems to be another picture beneath, of a stunning landscape. Could it be a long-lost masterpiece from 1770? If genuine, it could be worth millions.

One collector is certain it is genuine. Someone who uses any method he can to get want he wants and will stop at nothing.

Detective Superintendent Roy Grace finds himself plunged into an unfamiliar and rarefied world of fine art. Outwardly it appears respectable, gentlemanly, above reproach. But beneath the veneer, he rapidly finds that greed, deception and violence walk hand-in-hand. And Harry and Freya Kipling are about to discover that their dream is turning into their worst nightmare...

Best Grace in a long time!

This is a four-and-a-half star book imo. I really enjoyed this and my only quibble would be the speed in which Dan apparently copied the paintings, but it’s splitting hairs as the story was developed well, and I love stories where parallel situations come together. I was a little surprised by the ending but that added to the appeal.
All in all, a great story, excellently read as always, set in my hometown which is always a cool feeling.

Picture You Dead

Been waiting a long time for this audiobook, but was well worth the wait. Another excellent book in the Roy Grace series. Would really love to see the TV Series.

Running out of ideas?

I generally enjoy Roy Grace books but this was dull and I really struggled to get up any enthusiasm for art forgery! Roy & Cleo’s perfect home life is also pretty nauseating. I wonder if this series has run its course

Tedious

I agree with others who found this a struggle. I too have been a big fan of the Roy Grace series and was looking forward greatly to this one. What a disappointment it has been.

I found the story very slow, perhaps because it was submerged in the detailed descriptions of all manner of irrelevant things - the overhead railway; Cleo eating cheese; a character feeding his dogs; Prince Charles and Camilla!

I am also fed up with with hearing a resumé of everything that’s happened so far re Sandy, Bruno, Glen’s ex wife etc. I can see what the next development is going to be in Grace’s personal life but it’s taking a very long time to unravel; the first hints were dropped about three books ago.

The narration is excellent, however. Daniel Weyman deserves much credit for his convincing telling of a very thin story and for managing to stay awake whilst he told it.

Had to give up on this one

I've been a great fan of the series mainly because I like the main characters and am interested in what happens to them.

However, this one stretched my patience to breaking point. I really didn't need a badly delivered lecture on an era of painting, what to do if you find one which might be worth something, what happens at an Antiques Roadshow, how to steal a painting - and so on and so on ad nauseam. Unbelievable characters and a thoroughly plodding story.

That Mr Weyman manages to keep up such a high standard of narration wading through all this tosh is much to his credit.

Such a pity - as I really would like to know what happens to Roy and his family and colleagues - but not if I have to listen to a story such as this.

Very disappointing

Disappointed with lame story line...so much padding around a rather dull game painter and painting original and otherwise ..yawn...it didn't get any better..not going to pre order or read next book.

Just not great

I was really disappointed with this contribution to the Roy Grace series. Story drags and has none of the usual suspense and excitement. Debating whether to return or try and bear with it til the bitter end

Nothing new.

I've read or listened to all Peter James books, generally pre-ordering, as I've always loved them, but I've come to the conclusion that the format is getting tired and I'm sad to say boring.

Shame on the editor!

Have read nearly all of these books & enjoyed them until this one but this one was totally spoiled by the glaring error in the final stages. How can someone use the torch on his phone to locate the missing painting when it was taken from him before he was taken from his home? Such a glaring error could have been enough to have spoiled the whole book but just in case it didnt there is then a convoluted ‘pass the parcel farce with the picture, a total unexplained delay in linking the house fire at a key person of interest with the stealing of the painting & a peculiar scenario with the American who ‘killed’ the key fraudster. I would suggest a 12 year old could have written a more convincing end to this tale. Shame as it had a good story line spoiled by a lazy ending. A decent editor would have put the author back on his previous good track but as it is a worthless piece of fiction

Fast, frantic and fierce.

Thankfully this book is far better than Book 17!
From the beginning to the end you wait with bated breath for things to go wrong. And boy, do they.
Brilliant writing and fabulous narration.
A 'done in a day' book for all Roy Grace fans.

Not one of the best

This one didn't focus much on Roy Grace, and catching up with him is always an integral part of the story

Enjoyable but a bit predictable as to the ending.

I have enjoyed all the Roy Grace books and the plot was a good idea but I found that the detectives seemed like bystanders and the story a bit weak with few twists.

Love Peter James

I’ve loved most of Peter James stories some are better than others this one was enjoyable. He does love violence but normally the baddies get done!!
