Interview: Randy Rainbow Sees the World Through Pink-Colored Glasses

Publisher's Summary

This program is read by the author with a special appearance from his mom.

An intimate and light-hearted memoir by viral sensation and three-time Emmy-nominated musical comedian Randy Rainbow that takes listeners through his life—the highs, the lows, the lipstick, the pink glasses, and the show tunes

Randy Rainbow, the man who conquered the internet with a stylish pair of pink glasses, an inexhaustible knowledge of Broadway musicals, and the most gimlet-eyed view of American politics this side of Mark Twain finally tells all in Playing with Myself, a memoir sure to cause more than a few listeners to begin singing one of his greatest hits like “A Spoonful of Clorox” or “Cover Your Freakin’ Face”.

As Randy has said, “There’s so much fake news out there about me. I can’t wait to set the record straight and finally give people a peek behind the green screen.” And set the record straight he does. Playing with Myself is a firsthand account of the journey that led Randy Rainbow from his childhood as the over-imaginative, often misunderstood little boy who carried a purse in the second grade to his first job on Broadway as the host at Hooters and on to the creation of his trademark comedy character. In chapters titled “Pajama Bottoms” (a look back at the days when he wore pajama bottoms on his head to pretend he was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz), “Yes, It’s My Real Name, Shut Up!” (no explanation necessary...) and “Pink Glasses” (a rose-colored homage to his favorite accessory), Playing with Myself is a memoir that answers the question “Can an introverted musical theatre nerd with a MacBook and a dream save the world, one show tune at a time?”

Gurl, get your pink glasses!
Filled with his trademark humor and charm, and featuring a truly eye-catching title, Playing with Myself encapsulates everything I love about celebrity memoirs. From the juicy tidbits of his life and love to a glimpse behind his green screen, Randy Rainbow holds nothing back in this dishy tell-all. Puns and musical anecdotes aside, it’s also an honest and heartfelt exploration of his life and struggles, and a tribute to the women who inspired him. It beautifully celebrates courage, breaking the mold, and loving your authentic self, all told by the comedian himself, and featuring a special guest appearance from his mom, Gwen. It’s the perfect introduction to the man behind those fabulous pink glasses. —Michael C., Audible Editor

I was left wanting MORE!

It's a beautiful part one of Randy's memoirs, and I listened to it in one sitting! He narrates the book himself, and he does it brilliantly, of course. We get to know what Randy's childhood was like, how great his mother and mum-mum is/was, and how he found his feet when he was finally back in NYC. I laughed out loud, I ugly cried, and I was left greedily wanting more, which is exactly the way it should be.

Knew I’d Love It, But Exceeded Expectations

Oh, my, where to start? Randy Rainbow is a national treasure. I could not love this book more, and his narration is not only the icing but a bunch of cherries on top.

Randy is the trifecta of things I love in a man: New Yorker, Jewish and Gay, Gay, Gay. Swoon! (Note to self: This may be why you are a middle-aged hetero spinster. By choice, I might add; I started a trend and never looked back. But I digress.)

The honesty. The vulnerability. The fun. The creativity. The show tunes. The laughs. The Jewish mother. The celebrity encounters. There is so much to love.

I binge-listened in two days. I will listen again and again, just to hear Randy talk to me. And I bought the print edition for my brother, who introduced me to Randy’s videos when we all needed them. (My brother is a pilot, so Randy, if you’re reading this, your book will always have a prime seat in the cockpit of a major airline).

If you have an open heart, a sense of humor and a love and appreciation for show tunes, this book is for you.

I’m off to figure out how to make Randy my new best friend (in a non-stalker way).

Kudos, RR - can’t wait for the next one!

Don’t read this book. Listen to it!

Randy Rainbow is a unique, incredibly creative talent. How he came to be is a fascinating, sweet, sometimes sad journey. To hear Rainbow describe his journey in his own voice turns every moment into a hit show. A sheer delight.

A guilt free, binge worthy nosh !

Loved this so much. I gorged it all in about 5 sittings. Now I wish I'd taken my time. He is so talented and hard working that whatever he puts out there is a delight and this is no exception. My highest recommendation!

Love Randy Rainbow

Randy doesn't disappoint. As someone who has seen all his videos and enjoyed his stage show, I eagerly awaited his book - and it was fabulous. I am definitely happy that I got his audiobook as his narration made me feel like we were having a conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

Couldn’t put it down

I’ve loved Randy for a long time. His story only makes me love him more. Except for chapter 18. You had to go and make me cry, Randy. But all is forgiven. This goes in my list of books that I will listen to again. And again.

Fun listen

Exactly what you would expect from Randy Rainbow (if you are a fan) with a little extra. He does a great job with the narration and his stories (with abundant name dropping) are entertaining. Well worth the credit - but then I have been a RR fan for many years.
