Publisher's Summary

From the author of the Wall Street Journal best seller Barking Up the Wrong Tree comes a cure-all for our increasing emotional distance and loneliness—a smart, surprising, and thoroughly entertaining guide to help build better friendships, reignite love, and get closer to others, whether you’re an extrovert or introvert, socially adept or socially anxious.

Can you judge a book by its cover?

Is a friend in need truly a friend indeed?

Does love conquer all?

Is no man an island?

In Plays Well with Others, Eric Barker dives into these questions, drawing on science to reveal the truth beyond the conventional wisdom about human relationships. Combining his compelling storytelling and humor, Barker explains what hostage negotiation techniques and marital arguments have in common, how an expert con-man lied his way into a 20-year professional soccer career, and why those holding views diametrically opposed to our own actually have the potential to become our closest, most trusted friends.

Leveraging the best evidence available—free of platitudes or magical thinking—Barker analyzes multiple sides of an issue before rendering his verdict. What he’s uncovered is surprising, counterintuitive, and timely—and will change the way you interact in the world and with those around you just when you need it most.

Truly a phenomenal Book! Listen again!

Literally one of the best books I have ever listened to. Will listen to it again and again!

Been an audible subscriber since 1998 and have over 600-800 audiobooks in my library. This book rates within the top 10. Amazing science, Psychology and thoughts behind well worn cliches that make you look at the world from a different perspective.

Funny anecdotal examples and wry humor sprinkled throughout. Absolutely a must listen for everyone!

One of the best

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Big fan of Mr Barker and his research and story-telling. Funny, thought provoking and potentially life changing. The end brought tears to my eyes. Can’t wait for his next book

a fun book to read

It's fun to listen to this book. From time to time, it made me laugh even thought it's a book with serious content/topics.
The story about a soldier lifted and hugged the little German boy made me moved. It makes me think how we can draw the best from everybody and make the world a better place to live.
Several chapters were talking about marriage, it is interesting! You will sure feel better after listen to these chapters. Hahaha.
I recommend this book.

Excellent book

Eric digs in to flawed studies, historical data and how culture & time has changed friendships, marriages and being together - as well as joy and sadness, grief and degrees of happiness. Very enjoyable listen with mass appeal to all people.

narration is outstanding, content is pretty good

Narrator is absolutely fantastic and engaging

the book has some useful nuggets and gems but unfortunately lacking an overall cohesive message in my opinion.

would still recommend for a light hearted pop-psychology book with some good insights!

"Challenging!"

I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s previous bestseller, ‘Barking Up the Wrong Tree’. So, as a lifelong student of “people”, “relationships” and “what makes us tick”, I was so impatient to read Eric Barker’s new book.

I have to confess that, although I found this (audio) book thoroughly entertaining, humorous and backed by the meaningful level of research that I personally always need to enjoy a book, I also found it challenging. It provoked me to re-examine my understanding of ‘relationships’, ‘friendships’, ‘love’, ‘loneliness’, ‘communications’ … and all aspects of our interactions with others.

Well done, Eric Barker! You have ‘stopped me in my tracks’ and reminded me, as a business psychologist, that when I try to help others to lead & manage people and to deal with ‘relationships’, I still have an incredible amount to learn about myself and our relationships. Thank you!

Excellent! Clear, helpful and true.

Well worth a listen, this book takes all the most sensible advice, explains why it works and amuses you on the way.
I recommend it to anyone… in fact it should be a set text in all schools and colleges to read and discuss.
Thanks Eric

Scientifically based, wide read, novel information

I usually expect relationship books to cover a few key points we already know and just need reminding of. I also expect a bunch of filler and repetition about the same points over and over. It's not the case for this book.

This book is packed with information from start to finish. Too much to take in for a single listen. All the points made are supported by academic research of some kind. The connections he makes between disciplines are remarkable. Later chapters are very poignant and beautifully written.

Such a timely book for me.

I avoided it in my Audible library for 4-6 weeks just in time though to avoid making some serious long term mistakes. Eric Barkers 2 books have been of the most influential 10 books in my life. Thank you 😊
