Story
Fran finds her standing by the swings. A little girl, Esther, no older than seven years old, by herself in the dead of night, her pretty but old-fashioned yellow dress covered in grass stains and her hair dishevelled. She says she's waiting for Father, and that strikes Fran as particularly odd. After Esther is reunited with her family, Fran can't stop thinking about this pious child whose imaginary friend is God. Fran's instincts tell her something is very wrong. Why does Esther keep running away from home, and how did she get that bruise on her leg?

Story
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Story
"Your daughter is dead." When Kat Cavanaugh hears the words every mother dreads, her perfect world shatters. She takes in the beautiful long blonde hair, torn yellow dress, and chipped blue nail-varnish. It can’t be real. And then the police add the word "suicide". But Kat refuses to believe them. Even when they show her the familiar looping handwriting and smudged ink on the note her little girl left behind. She knows her bubbly, vivacious daughter would never take her own life.

Publisher's Summary
A dark, compelling new thriller from best-selling authors Sarah A. Denzil and Anni Taylor
Young backpackers Gemma and Hayley arrive at a remote fruit farm in Australia’s Northern Territory, out of money and desperate for work.
The weeks go on, a blur of fruit picking, parties, campfires and wading beneath waterfalls in the nearby hot springs. Until the night the girls find themselves on a dark highway, bruised and bloodied.
Senior Detective Bronwen McKay and psychologist Megan Arlotti question the terrified girls. But Hayley and Gemma are telling two very different stories of what happened to them over the past three months.
Which story is the truth, and what are the girls covering up? A suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Editor's Pick
They don’t do stranger danger like they used to...
"It sounded like a pretty sweet deal when Gemma and Hayley stumbled upon a job offering free lodging, pool access, fresh air, and fruit-picking. What more could you ask for? However, the outcome isn’t what you would expect. After being found bruised and bloody on the road, detectives can clearly tell the girls have been through a very traumatic experience. Held captive by a now dead mad man, it seems like a pretty cut and dry case for the detectives on the case. But why are Gemma and Hayley’s stories so vastly different? The combined masterminds of writers Sarah A. Denzil and Anni Taylor and the stunning narration by Aimee Horne take you down a very twisted road of truth and lies because the more you know, the more you questions you have, and the darker the answers are."

My pretty orchids...we are family
Backpackers from around the world were recruited to work the mango farm during mango picking season. At Llewellyn Farm everyone is family. Most are run aways from broken homes looking for a new adventure.
When two frightened but brave girls end up on a highway away from the farm, two detectives and a psychologist are called to ask the girls a few questions. Megan was just a psychologist who’d stepped way past her professional boundary lines to find the answers the girls couldn’t retain. Megan worked closely with the detectives assisting them with any information she could retain from the girls.
When questioned separately each girl recounts a different set of circumstances leading up to their escape. Both girls were at the centre of it all. Thankfully both girls survived the accident on the highway.
Narrator:
Aimee Horne was amazing. I haven’t enjoyed a performance this much since I listened to Will Watt and Hayden Bishop. Superb performance. I especially liked the British performance. Aimee reminded me how wonderful this story was when I read it myself. This was a revisit of the story and I thought it deserved a revisit with an audio experience. Aimee didn’t disappoint. She enhanced my reading experience 10 fold. I always follow along to the narration to ensure I’m retaining every word and this one didn’t disappoint.
This was a flawless performance. Each word was voiced just as it was written. The sound quality was sound proof with no outside disturbances.
Overall:
I loved the layout. Sarah immediately took the focus off of who chased them down the highway by focusing on the why. Let me just say I was unprepared for the why. Sarah has quite a scary imagination. The twists and turns were nothing I’d imagined. Sarah pulled off a clever story. It was brilliant.
I liked both detectives collaborating with the psychologist sharing ideas and concepts to proceed in the case. I liked all the supporting cast of characters they enhanced the story and brought this story to life.

I’m actually upset at the five star reviewers....
I was excited to listen to this book and definitely the first few chapters are attention grabbing. But after a few hours of ridiculously boring chapters, I had to return. This book is not good. Not even a little. Audible returns are made for this book. The narrator was good. The book is not.

Who's Lying
The book opens with a truck driver seeing two teenage girls running across a highway to get away from a man. He crashes the truck trying to avoid them, the girls are rescued and taken to a hospital. While Gemma and Hayley are recovering, they tell the detectives a bizarre and horrible story. But their stories don't quite match...
The book is three sections: the aftermath of the accident in the hospital, then three months prior when the girls arrived at the mango farm, then the present. It dragged a little in the last section, I thought things could have been moved along a little quicker. I also wished the police had been a little smarter, they really should've figured things out before they did.
Nothing is what it seems, both Gemma and Hayley are unreliable narrators at times, and there were enough twists to keep me guessing. I found the epilogue pretty chilling.
Aimee Horne was excellent with the delivery of the story.

Too long
The story started out well enough but unfortunately they needed an editor. There were surprises and some very good twists. It’s hard to put my finger on it except it was too long and wordy. At times I would have to skip because the situations went on too long. So parts of it worked and other parts were like come on get over it! I am in the middle with this book. Maybe because there were 2 writers?

Convoluted and Bizarre
The plot was so far-fetched that any mystery or suspense was lost. The “made up” psychological problems of the farm residents made no sense. The characters had all the depth and dimension of paper dolls. The relationship of the psychology consultant with her lover functioned as filler to make the book longer. It added nothing to the plot.
The narration was generally fine but the slow and plodding voice used for the farm owner did not fit the words. Better to just read clearly and skip the attempt at drama.
This one is worth nether time nor money.

Seems slow at first...just Wait For It!
I bought this book because of the great reviews and I was interested in the fact that the girls told different stories. When I started listening, I was disappointed because I felt like I had already read/listened to so many similar stories. Serial killer, keeping girls captive, they eventually escape... I don’t mean to sound cold, it just seemed like an old story. I wouldn’t want to spoil it, just believe that the first part hasn’t even scratched the surface. It gets really good!

Pretty Good except for several unrealistic actions
- - except for several unrealistic actions by the professionals in the story: police, & Drs. I don't think that being set in Australia makes their actions divert so much from what common sense would dictate in human nature; severe lapses in 'Common Sense'.
If you can overlook those faults it was passable entertainment.

Can't finish
I didn't finish the book. The narrator was okay when it came to general narration but her dialogue was so awkward and it made me cringe every time someone spoke. And it didn't matter who spoke, they all had multiple weird pauses within one sentence. It is also very hard to discern between the two girls.

Sublime to ridiculous!
The beginning had so much promise of intrigue and crime in a realistic setting. It soon became apparent that this wasn’t the case with a cliched corny Svengali baddie a set up in rural Australia that simply wouldn’t exist and unintelligent characters.
It went from dire to dreadful and was actually laughable in the end it was so far fetched. Some may like this kind of fiction but I’d like mine at least semi plausible.
The narration was the best but but even that got on my nerves in the end because the characters were so unbelievable.

Really different
The first 3/4 of this book was brilliant, really different to anything else I have heard, no idea where the storyline is going. I was totally hooked.
Last 1/4 was a bit disappointing, it got a bit fantastical and slightly ridiculous. Rather disappointed as I think I would have given it 5 stars otherwise.
Narrator is brilliant.

Starts well but becomes progressively tedious and ridiculous
Good idea. Good initial characterisation and compelling first part to the story. But part two deteriorates sharply. Very dull repetitive accounts of life at the farm. Combined with characters and events that are so unpleasant it becomes hard to listen to.
The plot becomes progressively ridiculous and I ceased to believe in the characters and lost interest. The last two hours are plain silly. Stuck it out but it was painful.

Absolutely ludicrous
I don’t think I’ve ever come across a novel that has tried to cram as many “plot twists” into a single story as this one. It goes from predictably bad to predictably worse to completely and utterly bizarre. It throws out after cliche in an attempt to “surprise” the reader, which to some extent it achieves... but not in a good way.

Excellent story and great narration
Got hooked on this book pretty quickly. No spoilers but Part 2 kicks everything off in a twisty way. All round a great book, plenty of well hidden secrets and excellent characters

I hated this book
I only listened to this because I had paid for it and audible wouldn’t let me return it. It was dreadful. So drawn out and everyone in it so thick. That’s all I can say. Don’t bother with it.

listened in 2 days! really clever summing up at the end. thats usually the bit i get bored or annoyed when all the loose ends are being put together to finnish a story but this one was superbly done.

A bit too long and not quite believable but I enjoyed it
Bit confusing at times but on the whole I found myself wanting to read on. Loved the narration.

Couldn’t tear myself away...
After travelling through the stark dessert, a friend told me about this story as it took place where we were travelling through. We were driving around 7-8 hours per day and it was their perfect companion.

Great story wonderfully narrated.
Two minor quibbles. 500 litres in the fuel truck is just fumes. You can carry that much on the back of your ute.
I love Aimee's narration but don't like whispered dialogue. Can never hear it.

Its hard to know what to say about this book, different, thought provoking and mentally challenging
You think you understand but then you don’t. I sometimes wonder how writers choose the story foundation. With this one there was a point where I wondered what my idea of a worst nightmare scenario would be. It wouldn’t even reach this plot. Worth the read. Broadened my horizons, yet again.

Started Really Well
I was very engaged in this until about the three-quarters mark, when it all started to get a little weird. The narrator's accents were also a little - weird. They often threw me off the story. However, I loved most of the first part.

Bit slow and gory at the start, but stick with it
I found it a bit hard to cope with at the start but the story does get you involved eventually and then it becomes hard to stop listening.
Narration was excellent and characters accents were spot on.
Stick with it and you will enjoy it, I will listen to another by these two authors.

A disappointing book
I am currently into checking out many Australian "who done its", so when l came across this book l decided to give it a read.
All l can say is a very disappointing outing.
I struggled to complete it as it was not worth the effort at all.
Check it out at a local Library
The reader Ames Horne did an excellent job reading - but she couldn't make up for the lack of a credible story.
