Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. Story
In this classic story, set in Victorian England, a well-born colt tells his life story, from his early years in a pleasant meadow to his experiences as an elegant carriage horse and then an overworked cab horse. Story
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Green Gables had no intention of adopting the talkative, mischievous, red-headed girl the orphanage in Nova Scotia sent by mistake. What they wanted was a sturdy, sensible boy to help with the chores. Instead, they got 11-year-old Anne Shirley, whose capacity for adventure was only matched by her bright spirit and love of life. Still, there was something about the little girl that gave them second thoughts. She was keen of wit with a scintillating effervescence that was purely captivating. Just perhaps....

Little Women itself “has been read as a romance or as a quest, or both. It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth.” Little Women has been read “as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well.” Alcott “combines many conventions of the sentimental novel with crucial ingredients of Romantic children's fiction, creating a new form of which Little Women is a unique model.”

No one would accuse 11-year-old Caddie Woodlawn of being dainty and ladylike. In spite of her mother’s best efforts, Caddie is as wild as the wind, playing freely and rambunctiously with her two brothers in the Wisconsin backwoods. There are rafts to build and trees to climb and pranks to play. Caddie especially likes to watch her friend Indian John build birchbark canoes at the river. Every day seems wide with possibility - as wide as the frontier. But living on the edge of civilization has its risks, too....

Publisher's Summary
Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter is a children's book focusing on the life of a little orphan girl. The orphan Pollyanna is forced to live with her strict Aunt Polly, who resents having to look after Pollyanna, because both of her parents passed away.
The young girl's room is a stuffy attic with no decorations or comforts, and Aunt Polly maintains strict rules and shows Pollyanna very little affection. Pollyanna tries to stay happy by playing what she calls the "Glad Game". Slowly, Pollyanna's sunny disposition and Glad Game start to affect the town of Beldingsville.
In every situation, Pollyanna insists that there is always something to be glad about. Eventually, even her Aunt Polly starts to appreciate Pollyanna's positive outlook. However, disaster strikes when Pollyanna is hit by a car and becomes paralyzed, unable to walk.
When she learns that she has lost the use of both legs, Pollyanna becomes very sad and distant. She stays in her bed and decides that there is nothing to be happy about. The townspeople of Beldingsville start to call on Pollyanna and remind her how much she has helped each person in the town live a happier life. With this support, Pollyanna realizes that at least she has the memories of being able to walk. Her aunt sends Pollyanna to a special hospital and Pollyanna undergoes physical therapy to regain the use of her legs giving Pollyanna a strong appreciation for her health and eventually her positive attitude returns.

Feeling Scroogey
I love kids’ books but this one is pretty bad. What might’ve made a good - short - Sunday school lesson is stretched unnaturally to book length. By halfway through I really wanted Pollyanna to STFU. Kudos to the Disney screenwriter who improved the plot by quite a bit. And this narrator is like a high-pitched dentist drill.
