Story
After discovering her mother’s secret life, Cara doesn’t have much faith in marriage. So when the love of her life, Simeon, proposes, she struggles to say "I do." She adores him, but why risk the perfect relationship by signing on a dotted line that could ruin everything? If her parents’ marriage taught her anything, it was that a gold ring doesn’t equal happiness, and she has no desire to follow in their dysfunctional footsteps.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Publisher's Summary
A secret lies buried at the heart of her family - but it can’t stay hidden forever.
When Cara stumbles across a stash of old postcards in the attic, their contents make her question everything she thought she knew.
The story she pieces together is confusing and unsettling, and appears to have been patched over with lies. But who can tell her the truth? With her father sinking into Alzheimer’s and her brother reluctant to help, it seems Cara will never find the answers to her questions. One thing is clear, though: someone knows more than they’re letting on.
Torn between loyalty to her family and dread of what she might find, Cara digs into the early years of her parents’ troubled marriage, hunting down long-lost relatives who might help unravel the mystery. But the picture that begins to emerge is not at all the one she’d expected - because as she soon discovers, lies have a habit of multiplying....

How do these authors do it?
Amazing story. Gut wrenching. Grabbed me the whole time. I couldn’t stop listening! I went through some similar things so could relate. I got a little mixed up but relistened to the chapter and got it. I love how there were very little little foul language! Wish more authors would do that. I hate hearing low class cussing throughout books as if I was in a sleazy bar. Thank you. Great voice too.

Interesting storyline BUT
Interesting storyline but most of the characters are truly poorly written. The central character, Cara, and her mother are the strongest and the ones I had the most interest in understanding and/or disliking. Her brother grew on me but in the end, I felt like his character could have had more to add to the story.
I'm not sure if I'm ok with the narrator's voice with certain characters also.
I think this would have been a better novel if the characters were more complex and less cartoonish or had better dialogue. The author left out a lot of details which would have made me more sympathetic to the characters or made for a more compelling novel.
I appreciated that there was an attempt to show both and often conflicting ideas about telling lies and keeping secrets but I felt it was kinda unrealistic that the mum would take 30 years to make her presence known, especially after she sent so many postcards supposedly. Even with the legal restrictions, it didn't bode well in my realistic view.
It's not horrible and I needed something not too fluffy and not too serious, so it actually worked. But I'm not sure if I would recommend the book - need to find someone who's looking for the same criteria as I needed to complete this book.

I really enjoyed this book. While the subject matter could have been dark and depressing, it wasn’t at all. I really liked Imogen Clark’s writing style. Her characterization was outstanding. I truly cared for the characters and what happened to them. I also enjoyed Henrietta Meire’s narration. I would definitely recommend this book.

Very enjoyable book
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well drawn and you know that if you met Cara you would become friends.
Lots of glimpses into peoples lives which may or may not, depending on your upbringing, bring back memories to readers,.
A real plus for me is that the ubiquitous 'F' word is never used ...
and the narrator deserves five stars of her own for her brilliant portrayals of the different characters.
I shall look out for other books by this author

Bittersweet and Emotional
Easy to understand book, not confusing even when different the story changes from the present to the past.
I totally recognise the controlling behaviour of some men. They start out like the perfect gentleman and then their true colours slowly shine through. There are 3 such men in this tale with each woman dealing with them differently.
The crux of the story involves children and how the father of the main character acts when he in his head is defied by his wife and how his behaviour impacts on the life of his children because of a massive secret that when discovered years later he cannot be asked any questions.

Starts out well, but slow-going
This could have been a really great book, as the premise is good. However the plot is pretty unbelievable in places (don't worry, no spoilers!). I'm struggling to get to the end of the audio book version, not helped by the grating tones of the narrator, who has the same intonation for just about every sentence, which gets pretty annoying after a very short while.
