Publisher's Summary

Recalled from the Great Crusade after Ullanor, Rogal Dorn and the VIIth Legion were appointed as the Emperor's praetorians - but only after the Warmaster's treachery was revealed did the full extent of that sacred duty become apparent.

Now, the Solar System comes under attack for the first time since the war began, and many of the seemingly impregnable defences wrought by the Imperial Fists prove inadequate. With all eyes fixed firmly upon this new threat beyond the gates of Terra, who in turn will protect Dorn from the enemy within?

not the end, but maybe the beginning of the end

The enemy are at the gates and amongst the loyal. They are here, have always been here. Its the way they fight, the alpha legion have planned for every contingent, anticipated every angle, devised every move.... that is except for Rogal Dorn. This is as good a book that has ever come out of a board game. There's intrigue, action, and character. The horus heresy can be a money grubbing mess at times, but this one stands out like a Ruby in Dorns armor.

Strap in and fortify your position.

VII

I love the fists and I have a better appreciation for the Alpha legion now. I like how ambiguous the ending is.

The amount of time that it took to get to the finale was filled with fantastic Alpa Legion tom-foolery, and I enjoyed all of the twists that this books three st me.

Mystery Abounds

I'm just getting into 40k lore and story. This book was great. Amazing performance by Keeble, of course. The story was full of great twists and turns. With the Alpha Legion around, you can never calm down or get comfortable cause then, BAM, another awesome curve all is headed your way. Also, Dorm is actually likable here. Very nice. Read it.

One of Few Heresy Greats

This book ranks up there with Betrayer and The First Heretic.

Read if you like the Alpha Legion, Imperial Fists, or normal humans operators in the Grimdark

Understanding tactics.

The story is well told but as with all these books, it is tactically silly.

I am Alpharius?

Awesome spy story and background, never much cared for Dorn until now and the book puts the events of Legion into perspective, in that Alpha Legion is losing their minds. Book description didn't do this one justice, not what was expected and that's for the better. Easily somewhere in top ten for the series.

Alpha fan disappointed

Keebles performance has been on point. I have enjoyed his voice since the Siege of Terra series and now coming back to the Heresy series to catch up on some novels I missed.

The overall tale is very much Alpha Legion, I was just really disappointed with Alpharius' end (or Omegon).

Honestly, I feel that Dan should have completed this arc (IF it is completed at all). Since he started it in Legion, best that he should finish it.

This is the only Alpha Legion audible I have listened to do it was weird for me to hear Keebles interpretation of what he felt Alpharius and Omegon would sound like. Not really I was hearing in my head....LOL going to be awhile before I can get use to it.

rogal is a bit of a mary sue

I wish the alpha legion wasn't so easily defeated and that the legion had at least achieved their secondary objectives. This felt like a really long, and broken up dis track. There are way too many flashbacks. To sum it all up I feel like the author was trying to punk alpharius....
alpharius lives. hydra dominatus.

One of the best in the series

This ranks with the First Heretic, The Flight of the Eisenstein and Vengeful Spirit as one of the best books in the entire series. Brilliant pacing, engaging story and believable characters that one can empathise with. This is the second book I have heard Jonathan Keeble narrate, and he is a brilliant voice actor whose narration is second to none. Masterful!

Starts strong ends strong

The middles a bit boring but it ends on a high. Pretty good overall. It’s nice when there’s actually consequences in these books.

One of the best in the series without a shadow of a doubt.

I have to say this is quite definitely one of the best books in the whole series, The story is fantastic and gripping, keeping you listening, bringing you back for more. The pacing is perfect I didn’t think any of it felt slow or too fast as if the writer was desperately trying to fit everything in at the end, just bang on. As usual Jonathan Keeble is amazing, almost every character sounded different, you could easily recognise who was speaking at any one time which just added to the immersion.

dull as sin

i really struggled with this one.
the narration by jonathan Keeble is top notch as always but i found the story itself to be dull and sin and a real slog.
if youre super into 7th or 20th legion it may be the right thing for you but it was jot my cup of tea.
