Story
In Any Means Necessary, nuclear waste is stolen by jihadists in the middle of the night from an unguarded New York City hospital. The police, in a frantic race against time, call in the FBI. Luke Stone, head of an elite, secretive, department within the FBI, is the only man they can turn to. Luke realizes right away that the terrorists’ aim is to create a dirty bomb, that they seek a high-value target, and that they will hit it within 48 hours. A cat and mouse chase follows, pitting the world’s most savvy government agents versus its most sophisticated terrorists. As Agent Stone peels back layer after layer, he soon realizes he is up against a vast conspiracy, and that the target is even more high value than he could have imagined—leading all the way to the President of the United States. In Oath of Office, a biological agent is stolen from a biocontainment lab. Weaponized, it could kill millions, and a desperate national hunt ensues to catch the terrorists before it is too late. Luke Stone, head of an elite FBI department, with his own family still in jeopardy, has vowed to walk away—but when the new President, barely sworn in, calls him, he can’t turn his back on her.

Publisher's Summary
In the much-anticipated debut of a new series by number one best-selling author Jack Mars, when elite Delta Force soldier Luke Stone, 29, joins a secretive government agency, he is dispatched on the mission of a lifetime: a whirlwind race across Europe and the Mid-East to save the President’s daughter before she is beheaded by terrorists.
In Primary Target, we see the forging of one of the world’s toughest - and most lethal - soldiers: Luke Stone. A 29-year-old veteran who has seen enough battle to last a lifetime, Luke is tapped by the Special Response Team, a secretive new FBI agency (led by his mentor Don Morris) to tackle the most high-stake terrorism operations in the world.
Luke, still haunted by his wartime past and newly married to an expecting Becca, is dispatched on a mission to Iraq, with his new partner Ed Newsam, to bring in a rogue American contractor. But what begins as a routine mission mushrooms into something much, much bigger.
When the President’s teenage daughter, kidnapped in Europe, is ransomed by terrorists, Luke may be the only one in the world who can save her before it is too late.
Primary Target is an pause-resisting military thriller, a wild action ride that will leave you listening late into the night. It marks the long-anticipated debut of a riveting new series by number one best-selling author Jack Mars, dubbed “one of the best thriller authors” out there.

Might be a good story but ruined by the narrator!
What is with the new jerky narration style!? STOP! “He picked up....the gun...”, “ she...took a bite...she chewed slowly.” “He...sat on the bodies.....it was t comfortable...but he didn’t want to...move.” Stop it! Ruined Greaney’s new book and now another new series with promise. Horrible!!!

Good story, bad reader.
The storyline of the book was good if not great. The reading performance was bad if not horrible. Super choppy lines, weird pauses within sentences, bad character voices. It’s was just a bad reading performance that actually hurt the book so much that, without reading it myself, I cannot give a accurate assessment of the actual writing of the book.

Couldn't make it past the 2nd chapter
UGH!!! Maybe it is because I have read and listened to too many books written by former tier 1 authors, but some of the details in the first two chapters just KILLED this book for me. At the beginning of the book we are supposed to be hearing about a Delta troop performing a raid in Afghanistan. The author says the main character is using a Sig Sauer 226 as his pistol. While not impossible, it is EXTREMELY unlikely for a Delta guy to use that gun. It is a primary sidearm for the SeAL's though. Then one of the Delta guys replies to an order with " aye-aye," another Navy term that I don't think I have EVER heard an Army soldier use. Maybe the author researched the SeALs more than he did Delta? The book was released in 2018 and he has the main charter running a H&K MP5, which is also very unlikely to say the least. The entire sequence of the raid detailed in the first two chapters make the Delta guys sound like a bunch of unprofessional yahoos, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Just could stomach more of the book to see if it gets any better.

Good, but possibly too contrite
The late Vince Flynn thrilled us all when he wrote the two prequels to the Mitch Rapp series. It wasn't a unique idea, but it was well done and helped answer questions that were always left hanging by the original book series. There was even a movie based on the first book, but only the movie title had any resemblance to the book.
The narration is the same caliber as all the books in the Luke Stone series. Larry Gorman is not George Guidall or Scott Brick, but he will be in that elite group, soon.
Now Jack Mars is joining the prequel world with the Forging series. This would be an excellent book with any set of characters, but it doesn't fit together as well as hoped when starting into the novel. The plot of a kidnapped president's daughter was ruined in West Wing and has been previously written too many times. That could be why this isn't a 5-star story and overall rating.
It's obvious, since this is tagged "Book 1," that Mars is planning additional titles in the series. It should be hoped that future plot lines are a little stronger and less retread.

Horrible narrator!, nasal voices, long drawn out pauses, overly descriptive words for ordinary objects/feelings. The story line was awful, drawn out, and a struggle to listen to for an extended period of time. I was really looking forward to this new book but was hugely disappointed.

Unbelievable
Okay, this is the first in the series of the cultivation of the hero Luke Stone. I read a lot of books of the ex war hero turned private agent genre and am pretty immune to the odd episode of incredulity and corniness. But even I find it difficult to suspend my disbelief with this book.
It is Jack Mars' first Luke Stone book but and I hope he refines the plots to something a little less predictable and a little more credible than this.
