In a city as old as London, the discovery is hardly surprising. But when scratch marks are found on the inside of the coffin lid, Detective Jane Tennison believes she has unearthed a mystery far darker than any she's investigated before. However, not everyone agrees. Tennison's superiors dismiss it as a historic cold case and the Church seems desperate to conceal the facts from the investigation. It's clear that someone is hiding the truth and perhaps even the killer. Tennison must pray she can find both - before they are buried forever.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

What a tense thriller
The story was incredible. However, the narrator is the best I’ve ever heard on Audible. I have listened to many Audible books. I hope the next two in the trilogy are read by the same person. Kudos to Audible for finding a narrator who not only reads the novel but makes it come to life. Thank you Audible!!

If you think there’s politics in your workplace…
Other reviewers have already described this quite well. My contribution: Jane’s womanism in a manly job overshadows the procedural plot by a big margin. Double sources of tension, quite effective.
I know firsthand how far the gender preference pendulum has swung in 30 years. Diversity and “me-too” politics have put straight white males at the back of the promotion line and front of the convenient villain line. Don’t think this book inspires nostalgia but it was written in a distinctly different time.

I guess I started with a later series and maybe this is why I have some issues with this female detective. Police procedural, yea, but so much more!
Tennison! She's not always likeable, but she's exactly what she needs to be to solve the most heinous of crimes. The writing is whip-cracking fast and on-point, and this narration is excellent. La Plante is at here peak here, if you love British mysteries that aren't cozy, set in an environment that is far from comfortable, then this book is for you.

Having already been a fan of the 90s television series, I already knew it was a good story, but it was equally as entertaining listening on audiobook. Rachel Atkins’ narration is outstanding, one of the best I’ve ever heard. Her ability to transform instantly into the different characters, flawlessly mastering a variety of accents, made me feel like I was listening to a full cast of actors. She seemed to be channeling Helen Mirren perfectly as well, which was a treat. Can’t wait to enjoy the next audiobook in the series!

Strong Women Rock
I watched the PBS mystery with Helen Mirren but didnt remember that much about the plot. I need to go back and watch it again. The whole time I listened, I could see Mirren's face. I love strong women characters, and Tennison is strong but also insecure enough, angry enough, to be thoroughly believable. She's a woman fighting her way through a man's world, taking scalps along the way. I did get tired of her live in boy friends self pity and egocentricity but alls well that ends well. I definitely have to listen to the rest of the books!

Inappropriate narration
Being from the north east I would find it inexplicable if all the characters in Vera had cockney accents,I therefore struggled with all the residents of London having Yorkshire accents. I realise this is probably a petty point but once it had bugged me I couldn't listen without noticing it and eventually gave up on the book. I don't intend this to be a criticism of the narrator I just don't think she was right for this book.

Lynda la Plant is called the queen of crime drama and she definitely deserves that title. Her writing is so detailed, the characters incredibly well written and rounded out.

"A sweet, innocent girl."
My first encounter with DCI Jane Tennison, either in print form or the acclaimed TV series and I can see how effective this must be on the small screen if well cast. As a written story it also has merits, the plot involved, the cast of characters numerous, the tensions faced by a ranking female police officer trying to garner esteem in what was, at that time, still viewed mostly as male territory. But the lead protagonist is not sympathetic, indeed, it is hard to feel empathy with any of the characters, which makes the entire book somewhat difficult to fully enjoy.
Also, narration by the excellent Rachel Atkins feel wrong, her female voice challenged by so many male voices to perform.
Overall, quite enjoyable for those readers who really like English police procedurals, or historic gender conflict in the workplace

A cop story with a female perspective
Quite dated by todays standard of ‘Line of Duty’ and the like plus a plethora of Scandinavian cop stories but fitting and novel in it’s time and selection for a television series. Well read by a great narrator with the ability to create credible characters and sense of who they are but the story perhaps doesn’t have the befuddling power of those around now. One almost felt disappointed it turned out the way it did.

Average at best
From the start the tone was angry and the language and characters quite obtuse. I only made it to chapter 6. The protagonist is not a likeable person and the other characters are much the same. The story is one that’s been told a thousand times and was boring. La Plante needs to be more current as this seemed a little behind the times. Lacked humour, depth, any likeable characters and the story was average at best. Left me feeling irritated and a little offended by the language which was really aggressive and over used. This felt like a production line novel for a paycheck for all involved in its publication. I’m happy I didn’t pay for it. Thanks Audible Plus!

works regardless of the medium!
Jane Tennison - what a creation by the prolific Lynda la Plante!
I guess we are all conditioned by Helen Mirren's brilliant portrayal of an ambitious, talented and all too human Jane Tennison in the medium of the TV series. This first of the accompanying books, read or listened too, does not disappoint.
Lynda's acting and theatrical background perhaps contribute to the multi-media success, which not all authors manage to succeed at.
A good example of the crime genre transcending the limits imposed by highbrow critics!

It's 1990 & this police woman is not wanted
Jane Tennison is a tough female detective who is not wanted because of her sex. She fights for the position of a colleague who died and eventually wins the respect of the male dominated team.
