Publisher's Summary

In his groundbreaking best seller The Gift of Fear, Gavin de Becker showed millions of readers that, like every creature on earth, human beings can predict violent behavior. Now, in this exclusive audio presentation of Protecting the Gift, de Becker empowers parents to fully trust their own intuition when it comes to their children's safety. In this indispensable resource, de Becker provides keen insights into the behavior and strategies of predators. He offers practical new steps to enhance children's safety at every age level: specific questions parents can ask to effectively screen and evaluate babysitters, daycare services, schools, and doctors; a "Test of 12" safety skills children need before being alone in public; warning signs to help parents protect children from sexual abuse; and how to keep teenage girls and boys from unsafe situations with peers and adults. De Becker also shatters the myth that rules like "Never talk to strangers" will keep your children safe. By showing what danger really looks like - as opposed to what we might imagine it looks like - de Becker gives parents freedom from many common worries and unwarranted fears.

Every High School Freshman Should Be Required

This is one of the most important and best-presented books I've ever listened to. It tells what parents, children and especially young women need to know to keep from becoming victims of violent crime. I've been in law enforcement for a long time, and much was eye-opening to me. The only drawback is that it is severely abridged, and there is no unabridged version.

Anti-gun rant a real dissaponiment

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, with the caveat that De Becker goes on an anti-gun rant that is truly reprehensible at this point. The information is quite good and likely to prove helpful to anyone who pays attention.

Would you recommend Protecting the Gift to your friends? Why or why not?

Pretty sure I just answered this same question in the item above.

What aspect of Gavin De Becker’s performance would you have changed?

See item1 above. Great information and expertise, lose the political perspective.

Do you think Protecting the Gift needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No

Must own book if you have a family!

This is a GREAT book... you just have to get past a nauseating, hypocritical, factually incorrect, anti-gun rant. It's a shame to have a big, fat, illogical red mark right across such a fantastic work, and I'm sure it will make others question De Becker's credibility, as it did me, when they hear something that has been proven factually incorrect as we hear in his long rant on the scariness of guns. Worse yet are those who DON'T know the facts about the gun control argument and take De Becker's lies and errors as truth. I do hope listeners are able to pick the wheat from the chaff as there is some great information here which is not available in many other (audio)books and this is such an important topic.

Similar to his first book. Gift of fear

Good information. Would be great gift for new or expecting parents. Only thing is a lot of the stories and info was covered in the Gift of Fear. I would probably recommend one or the other not both. Gift of fear for single women more and gift of fear for parents.

A Must Read (or listen) for all parents

Protecting the gift picks up where "Gift of Fear" leaves off. It is full of insights into keeping your child (as well as yourself) safe. What he says makes so much sense - I have already recommended it to several friends, and will continue to do so! Thank you for an amazing work!

Protecting the Gift

I wish all parents especially mothers would listen to this book. It will give you the tools you need to protect yourself and teach your girls to protect themselves from violent crime.
I have also listened to The Gift by the same author not only once but twice and I will definitely be listening to this book again.
The author does a wonderful job of narrating and the stories are spellbinding. What a wonderful way to educate yourself on how to stay safe. A+++ Two thumbs Up!

Disappointed

Such a shame this author focuses on talking about gun control in certain sections and uses facts improperly like the liberal media. overall it has decent points but would not use this as a single reference for protecting kids.

Very useful and insightful

I listened to the entire book with rapt attention, the author manages to take a possibly dry topic and insert enough real life anecdotes to keep one riveted. I have told many friends about this book and will now purchase the print version as one of my reference books. As good as the audio is, I think the a print copy will help when referencing a particular point or chapter.
