We have all pondered seemingly unanswerably but significant questions about our existence - the biggest of all being, "Why are we here?" Philosophy has developed over millennia to help us grapple with these essential intangibles. There is no better way to study the big questions in philosophy than to compare how the world's greatest minds have analyzed these questions, defined the terms, and then reasoned out potential solutions. Once you've compared the arguments, the final step is always deciding for yourself whether you find an explanation convincing.

Publisher's Summary
Today's psychologist is apt to be very different from the image most people conjure up when asked to picture one - an image that almost always suggests Sigmund Freud or someone like him, complete with leather couch.
But as indebted as they may be to Freud's landmark explorations of our psychological landscape, modern psychologists are involved in far more than helping people cope with their inner demons. Instead, they are working in areas that now encompass every part of the process by which we develop and function as people:
- How we perceive, remember, and learn
- How we select our friends and partners and retain their affection and love
- The things that motivate us
Now you can gain a basic introduction to psychology - beginning with its historical context and looking ahead to some of the directions it is likely to take in the future - in this fascinating series of 36 lectures from an acclaimed teacher and author. It explores all of the many new areas that now fit comfortably beneath psychology's umbrella and the sophisticated new research methods that have emerged.
These lectures are both an excellent summary of a transformed profession and an ideal starting point for those eager to expand their understanding of the human mind.

Magnificent! 97/100
I have over a hundred audiobooks and taken many of the Great Curses, several psychology related and this is the first time I felt I compelled to write a review specially for the long time I and you will invest on it.
If you are looking for complete overview of the field of psychology look no further this is it.
Very well structured
Very clear
Great examples
Down to earth
The profesor makes an excellent job over all since I never got bored.
If you are wondering if there is something bad the only MINOR thing I notice is every now and then he gets tangle with the words but since it seems to be a life performance is completely natural.
If any errors on this review please excuse my spelling, grammar, and punctuation. English is not my native language.

Should be titled Intro to Psychology
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor David W. Martin?
Probably not since the professor did not go out of his way to make the course especially interesting or unique.
Would you be willing to try another book from The Great Courses? Why or why not?
Most books from The Great Courses are excellent, but sometimes, as in this case, the course was mediocre at best. This was clearly just sections of the first few introductory classes that he usually teaches with nothing extra or particularly interesting to capture your attention.
Did Professor David W. Martin do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
N/A
Could you see Psychology of Human Behavior being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Absolutely not.
Any additional comments?
Course does not really get interesting until lecture 23. This course does not emphasize human behavior, and, in reality, is only about human behavior to the same extent that all of psychology captures that topic. The professor made an obvious and dangerous blunder when describing the scientific method in terms of its origin and reliability. I think that was maybe in lecture 4, and he basically indicated that the scientific method is nothing more than a choice in epistemology that some people have decided to accept as a means to obtaining knowledge - somewhat like a faith-based methodology. This is clearly wrong; there are much better reasons for how and why the scientific method evolved into what it is today, and why it is continually relied upon.

Horribly outdated, meandering presentation
I've listened up to lesson 6 and can't go further. The prof. speaks clearly but his lectures seem vacuous and devoid of much critical engagement with his discipline, making them semi-unbearable to listen to. The two lectures on Freud are what finally did me in, the prof. must have trained decades ago and hasn't stayed current since then. His presentation style is meandering, but at least that helps you avoid thinking about how poorly framed most of his points are.

What did you love best about Psychology of Human Behavior?
This lecture series covers essentially every concept discussed in an introductory psychology course. Because I was familiar with many of the concepts, the lectures were easy to follow and addictive to listen to. The perfect introduction for any psychology major!
What made the experience of listening to Psychology of Human Behavior the most enjoyable?
The lectures were short and focused on detail.
What did you like best about this story?
The fact that every chapter focused on a key aspect of the subject content
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I enjoyed all of the lectures but the Psychology of Emotion was my favourite
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The moment at the end of each chapter in which I learnt something extremely valuable to my course.
Any additional comments?
The Psychology of Human Behaviour is the perfect book for any undergraduate psychology major. The series of lectures break down the subject into its key area and explain in great detail to the student, the theories of psychology today. The quality of the teaching is of an extraordinary standard and allows the student to engage in each of the lectures. Every second of the audio book is relevant to the understanding of the subject. Each lecture is short and to the point. The student can focus for half an hour and then come back to learn more another time whenever it suits. Overall, a truly wonderful listen and an incentive to study and learn more of courses on offer by The Great Courses series.

More 'abnormal' than normal behaviour
Would you try another book written by The Great Courses or narrated by Professor David W. Martin?
I have already purchased dozens of Great Courses across a wide variety of subjects, and never before been disappointed.
What was most disappointing about The Great Courses’s story?
Ten of the first 13 lectures were about psychiatric conditions and about medication and therapies like ECT (the Professor concluded psychology can't 'explain' these conditions in terms of human behaviour or why the treatments work!) The remaining sessions were more about mainstream psychology but most examples of experiments seemed based on small scale studies done on students in US colleges. There was little to be learned that I didn't know 40 years ago from general reading.
What didn’t you like about Professor David W. Martin’s performance?
The sessions followed classical theory in terms of helping people remember the content, but there was so much repetition with very little new material.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment predominantly.
Any additional comments?
I have bought over 30 Great Courses from Audible and many more DVD series direct from the company. Always I have found new knowledge or a refreshing new slant on facts I did already know. I ploughed on through all 36 lectures of this course thinking it must get better. For me, it didn't!!

It's more about the study of psychology than about psychology
Too much time on methods, theories, treatments, therapies, and too little time on actual human psychology. Too much about the people who study psychology and their categories and ideas, than about the actual object of study: humans and their behaviour.

Great natural performance
This was a fascinating course which was very naturally delivered. It felt at times like I was in a university lecture hall and the performance made the subject matter engaging. if you want a starting point to learn about psychology this book is highly recommended!

Out of Date
Prof. Martin is respectable and very knowledgable with years of experience, he delivered a very insightful lecture. However, most of the basis of topics here are out of date, for example describing diagnoses based on DSM-IV. Not worth listening to in 2020.

It was really interesting but I found the lecturer did not take enough care relaying past studies or other information.

Many Nuggets, but More Behaviour than Psychology
Any additional comments?
This had many good nuggets, but it wasn't what I was looking for. I disagree with many things in the text, but I liked the orderly way in which they were grouped and presented. This would be good listening for the budding psychotherapist, but it wouldn't be essential by a long shot.

Excellent for 1st year psych students or enthusiasts
lectures are 1/2hr so content is a general overview of main topics in a 1st yr psych textbook. Despite this I really enjoyed the content and the lecturer teaching style and his perspective on certain subjects

Excellent grounding in the topic of Psychology.
Dr. Martin makes it easy to listen and understand the information. He engages his audience with real life examples on the topics, which makes it very relatable. I have throughly enjoyed this experience and the series of lectures.

A very worthwhile listen!!!
This guy is great! There was so much content covered and comprehensively explained, yet it was simple enough to listen to in the car every day. If you are interested in learning about psychology, I highly recommend you start here.

Wow that explains it.
The beginning is very hard and deep but persevere as it helps with the bulk of the book. Once you’re flowing through this set of lectures it’s great and the narrators style is easy to hear and enjoy. This book should be an essential for all to read or hear.
