Story
Most of us are quite relaxed and confident when we're with our friends and family. We can tell a story or even tell a joke. But put us on a platform and we can feel very different. When we speak to an audience, we often put on a public mask; and use a different voice. Why can't we seem to be ourselves when we give a talk? In this audiobook, we will look at all aspects of spoken communication, from structure right through to delivery. We will learn how to have a conversation with our audience - to be ourselves - so that we connect with them every time we speak.

Needs commitment, but worth it!
This audiobook has so many ideas that you can learn, but you need to listen to it and put your mind to it. You need to apply the principles too. I struggled a bit with a few concepts, but when I finished the audiobook, it all made sense. This is an audiobook that enriches your public speaking, ability to think clearly, and communicate effectively. It enriches your life in general. Play and listen, this audio-book has interesting sections and you will be captivated by insights, wisdom, and sometimes humor in this book. Your day is going to be better for it!
I listened to this audiobook taking in one section at a time, because I felt it was better that way. The first few chapters are all about self-discovery. It’s something you want to take slowly at first to absorb everything and reflect on it. Then after those chapters, the book knows you’re ready for the good stuff to test and practice your understanding of what it really takes to do public speaking and presentations real well. A great audiobook for someone who takes learning to heart.

Inspiring and practical at the same time
It was a great find. It is easy to find a book on the same topic that is inspirational, but most lack true relatability as to how and where we can implement the techniques and things we learn in the book. Well, this audiobook is different. I find it inspirational and practical at the same time. It was easy to relate to. It was easy to see myself applying the things I learned in this book in my line of work. I do a lot of presentations at work. And even for those who may not encounter such tasks often, somehow you will find yourself in a situation wherein you have to give a speech or a message in a social event (weddings, promotion party, parties, funeral, etc.). You can’t escape it. Learn to enjoy and experience a sense of pride in your experience. This audiobook can help you do that.

I used to have someone write my speeches
There was no horrible experience for me when I had to do public speaking, but in my 9 years of giving speeches since I put up my own business, I don’t remember any of my speeches getting such phenomenal success. Honestly, sometimes I just want to get it over with. But I’ve seen friends make the room light up with so much energy. I also observed how that lights up the spirit of their teams.
I am lucky with very loyal people on my side and for many years that I feel that they deserve not just the customary annual speech this year. So, I want it to be more personal and something I personally wrote. I want a speech that would really capture our genuine spirit as a team. I want to give more inspiration and just give them a refreshing speech to celebrate a decade of great accomplishments together. Don’t get me wrong, I know very talented writers who can write you an amazing speech. But I just find that it is missing something for all these years. It is missing the authenticity and the genuineness of my own true thoughts and things I truly want to express towards my colleagues.
Speeches, I realized, is a great opportunity to express a genuine message that can truly make a difference in the morale of your team. I feel more connected to myself reading this book. Although the first few chapters about fear do not directly apply to me, I learned much about how to be truly present in that moment you are delivering a speech. I learned that we can be mindful not only of ourselves but also of others and how what we say can impact others. I love how Gerard Shaw provided very useful insights on how crafting amazing speeches can strengthen any organization towards the ultimate goal of success.

Simple effective learning designed for novice and
Big props to how this book is designed to make it easy for readers to learn best and easiest. This learning blueprint is very effective for me. Although it doesn’t take you right away to the empowering techniques and tips you can use during presentations and public speaking, it takes you to the real vital stops you should first take to truly learn public speaking skills more effectively.
The first stop is getting to know YOUR own fear in the most logical way I ever heard it being explained. The first Chapter will make you rethink about fear and there’s a big possibility that just like me you will lose fear about fear. I know, some of us are maybe like me who are afraid of being afraid. I resent fear. It once made me feel so powerless and insufficient. But this book changed all that. Fear is there for a reason and we can use knowing its existence in certain situations for a purpose, especially during a speaking engagement. This book made me understand more about being human. Understanding our human vulnerabilities is as powerful as knowing our strengths. This new wisdom makes me feel more connected to others than before and profoundly aligned with my own true self as a human being.
The second stop is taking the perspective of our audience during public speaking. Chapter two explains clearly the expectations of our audience during presentations and speaking engagements. It gives us useful insights on what fear can do that may affect us directly, our audience, and most especially the message we want to put across. It taught me one of the most cherished lessons I ever learned in self-expression.
The third chapter is the third and very empowering stop on the topic of being brave. At this stage, I feel that because of the previous chapters, I am ready to take on a braver stance and ready to take in what it takes to be brave and free on stage. I don’t just want to be a good public speaker, after reading this chapter, I felt ready to become one.
The fourth stop commences big big lessons on HOW to build communication skills. The first big thing to establish in a public speaking event is making a connection with your audience and next is adapting to an audience. This is where my journey began in learning how I can use both Verbal and Non-verbal communication to captivate an audience.
Chapter five gets really interesting as it heads straight on HOW to craft amazing speeches. It’s got a whole chapter dedicated to it. Just as helpful as the next chapter on designing stellar presentations. Chapter seven is the most inspiring chapter for me. I was excited to read this chapter but thought I’d follow the blueprint this book provides to guy readers into an interesting journey of self-empowerment and skill improvement. Chapter seven is all about applying the laws of attraction to charm your audience. And then the last chapter also provided supporting tips and some more supplementary need to know to really know what it takes to become a remarkable public speaker. This book deserves a 5 star and more!

Very useful.
This book helped me plan a trip to Ireland. I had a fantastic time. This was a handy guide to know about a place before I got there and to help me decide where to go. There are so very many wonderful places to see in this fantastic country that it made it very helpful to have a guide.

Oh dear
Couldn’t get past the swear word and nasty loud belch in Chapter One which should have been edited out.
Pity, as it sounded like an interesting book.

No quick schemes
Building your public speaking career takes time and effort. This book is honest about that. No promises of quick tricks and schemes. There is no magical way through it. Building your skills in public speaking really must start from a strong foundation of knowledge, supported by real experience and discoveries you have to see on your own to fully understand. This audiobook is a great guide to embarking in in-depth learning from the most basic and fundamental concepts to integrating fully into a real usable skill in today’s world.

Good companion on a weekend
I digested this book over a weekend. It’s a good and enriching listen. For those who are serious about learning the tricks and techniques of powerful speeches and converting presentations/proposals, I can recommend this book. You’ll be ready for your speaking engagement in no time. Keeping this handy to refresh my mind with really motivating thoughts before I take on the stage.

Helpful as I get more speaking invitations
I got good results from my experience speaking in public. I get more confident as I continue to take efforts in delivering good speeches that people love. I’ve read the reviews and I agree. This book has opened a lot of opportunities for me to collect more experience in this field, and therefore hone my public speaking skills more. The more you practice, the more often you can say to yourself, “Gerard was right”. Indeed, my favorite book in self-improvement.
