The crime of rape sizzles like a lightning strike. It pounces, flattens, destroys. A person stands whole, and in a moment of unexpected violence, that life, that body is gone. Award-winning writer and public health executive Michelle Bowdler's memoir indicts how sexual violence has been addressed for decades in our society, asking whether rape is a crime given that it is the least reported major felony, least successfully prosecuted, and fewer than three percent of rapists ever spend a day in jail.

Story
Baby X is a shocking and unforgettable story of how some of the UK's most disadvantaged children escaped their tormentors - and explains why some cases, similar to that of Baby P's, ended in tragedy. When super-tough cop Sergeant Harry Keeble announced he was joining Hackney's ailing Child Protection Team in 2000, his colleagues were astounded. Known as the 'Cardigan Squad', its officers were seen as glorified social workers dealing with domestics. The reality was very different.

Publisher's Summary
Not so cute and cuddly! Not a cozy mystery! Not like any crime story you have listened to.
Serena McKay, P.I., lives in a post-apocalyptic dystopian time where the rich get richer and the poor are homeless. Existence in August City is nightmarish at best and disastrously chilling at worst. Serena has suffered from devastating emotional and physical abuse but she continues to do her job in spite of it.
Fans of Jessica Jones and post-apocalyptic fiction will love Purple Kitty!
As a strong, albeit dysfunctionally-flawed private investigator, Serena uses every weapon in her arsenal to solve bloodcurdling crimes in this hard-boiled, dark-fiction, dystopian thriller series while a notorious serial killer is after her green eyes...
Can Serena catch The Cellophane Killer who slaughters women with green eyes and then wraps them up in cellophane like a sandwich for her to find? Will she catch him, or will he catch her?

Can't wait for the sequel!
I really enjoyed this book. I will warn that sensitive subjects are a main theme of the book, including sexual abuse of children. The main character is intriguing and I am excited to see where her story continues. I gave the performance only 4 stars because she has a tendency to have out of place pauses throughout the novel, otherwise well deserving of the 5 stars overall.

I tried
I tried to like it. First off it, might have, been better with, a different, narrator. The constant pauses made it very difficult to listen to. Second, the description said "if you like Jessica Jones" and they are simular in ways ( I won't spoil it) it kind of feels like a knock off. It's almost half way through the book before you start learning anything about the case, the first half is constant flashback back story on the main character.

interesting, captivating, addictive!
The narrator for this book was an excellent choice. She does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. She does a wonderful job with not only all voices for characters, but the male voices as well. She really puts the reader in every scene. Serena isn’t your average private investigator. She has a little something extra, that sounds disturbing and extremely interesting. she did not start out being a private investigator, but difficult work situations pushed her in that direction. She did not have the easiest of childhood, but through it all she managed to overcome. You won’t believe what position she finds herself in, trying to save her life, in the life of a missing child! However, this book definitely ends with a major cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. You will feel the same! insertion point at end

A good mystery in a strange world
This is essentially a mystery novel. There are bits of sci fi snd future society that permeates everything— but that isn’t part of the plot. And if does stray into politics and preaching of capitalism from time to time. That being said, it’s a solid mystery and has interesting peeks if a dystopian future.

Would be better with different narrator
I've not read anything quite like this dystopian crime fiction. It's a pretty good story, but Kim Rossi's narration is tough to listen to. She puts far too many pauses where they don't belong and her inflection is odd. Her performance is a real distraction from the story. Although the main investigation is solved, there is one significant thread that is left hanging as a setup for the next book, a practice I find frustrating.

Sad Crimes
I did enjoy this book as it is a dark psychological murder mystery in the future. The main character is Serena McKay ex detective now a PI. She had a horrific childhood and developed a special power which she rarely uses. She is investigating a child’s disappearance and has sad ending as well helped captured the cellophane killer a long time ago who then escapes and Malanchik get to her best friend Vega. Cannot wait for Blue Cadillac to come to audible to see what happens to Serena and Malanchik. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. "He's coming for you."
August City and some 50 years in the future, a place divided by the haves and have nots. Until she made detective, Serena McKay had suffered physical abuse both at the Academy and after, from her fellow male officers wanting to keep the job for the boys. But she endured - she needed the job - until setting up as a P.I taking on cases abandoned by the police.
Which was how she came to meet the mother of a missing chi!d, already gone for.nearly two weeks, the only real clue, a left behind, favourite purple kitty toy. Something about the woman triggers memories of her own mother and, through her recollections, not only does the reader get to know about Serena, but the detective is also able to solve the missing child case. But further distraction slows her down: a new murder spree has broken out in the city and Serena keeps thinking she's receiving a message: "He's coming for you."
Very cleverly presented and well written, this is not the usual comfortable P.I. tale but one scarred by personal violence, abuse, endurance and self loathing, and not one to be entered into lightly. It is a powerful story and, despite not particularly liking the main protagonist, this reader was totally riveted throughout. I
Narration is by Kim Rossi, who is magnificent as Serena relating the story from her perspective throughout. Emotionally imbued, her reading carries the text to perfection and the voices of the other protagonists are also individually delivered. Her's is a good performance which enhances the book right through to the end.
My thanks to the rights holder of Purple Kitty, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. This was my first experience of the author's writing as i very much enjoyed the intensity of feeling. A second book, Blue Cadillac, is already avajable, ( though, sadly, not yet on Audiobook ) which presumably takes up Serena's story from where Purple Kitty ended. I've bought the book already.
Please note, this book deals with unpalatable ideas and happenings, so beware.
