The Syrian plane disintegrated, evaporating in a gush of silvery smoke, rent through with bright white lightning, and the ejecting pilot's body was blown clear of the fuselage. For an instant it was outlined ahead of David's screen, cruciform in shape with arms and legs thrown wide, the helmet still on the head, and the clothing ballooning in the rush of air.

Great book to understand South Africa
I have read all the Courtney books by Wilbur Smith. Of course, the first “When the lion feeds” is the best, followed by “Power of the sword” and now “Rage” the biggest and most controversial. Rage is realistic, tough, sad and revealing - the ability of sane men to do truly evil things to their fellow humans while preserving their own “freedom.” It is a book that will make you think long after you came to the last chapter. All the characters are riveting and believable.

Wilbur Smith at his finest
This is Wibur Smith at his finest and then some. Wilbur has said that this was his most difficult title and it's easy to see why. Never boring, with excellent and deep character development eliciting emotion and feeling. Though the subject content is potentially disturbing, it is presented in a meaningful and insightful way where one can understand and identify with a deep and emotionally charged issue from both sides. Excellent.

Smith rarely - if ever - disappoints…
…and Rage is typically enthralling. Of course there is a usual plenitude of eyebrow raising coincidence and unlikely…social (as well as biological) incestuousness, but cast aside skepticism…Smith is fair to both sides of the apartheid issue, refrains from the politically correct agenda (thank the Lord) and is refreshingly prescient.

Characters are all too screwed up to enjoy
I love Wilbur Smith. I’ve listened to almost every one of his recorded books. He always does a good job making characters complex. Not all good, not all bad. This time it didn’t work. I couldn’t finish it. The racism and sexism and all-around disturbed characters is too much and overshadows the historical importance of the Apartheid struggle. I know that it was a dark time in history but he chose to add gas to that fire.

I first read Rage years ago and now have heard the story. It is a very good book, well written and the narrator is amazing. He brought the story to life for me. Loved the Book and the Now the Audible One!
I've been a fan of Wilbur Smith as long as I can remember and have pretty much all his books. Rage fits neatly into the Courtney series and I would recommend it anyone interested in Smith's story of the South African family. My only issue with the narration was that the sound quality was quite poor - or at least the recorded sound was not always high enough and even with my headphones on full volume it was a struggle to hear sometimes (like too much bass?). It was very easy to tell when it switched to a different file as the volume changed!

Hooked. Mix-up history, patriotism & passion......
Makes for a great read, but once one gets hooked on the audible-version...... it will keep one hooked during long-days of hard labour (ear-budz), lazy weekends (b/t-speakers) or just rush-hour traffic (car-audio)!!
Wilbur Smith is treuly a master at living-up history through real-live ordinary humans in the details utilising emotions, passion and heart-aches. There is no room for fantasy in history, although the amound of life-lessons is limitless. Trueth of life's jing-yang is throuh-out evident where every action (good or bad intended) always plays out with an equal, but opposite re-action.....esspecially if "the other person's situation" is not concidered in life.
I love the true history being played out over generations and the trueth in a shrewd way, where later generations will, unfortunately mess-up their values and future.....by "fighting with/against their own roots"

Exhilarating, frightening and
Another gripping saga told against the backdrop of the meticulously researched context of the apartheid era and the population’s struggle against it. Cruelty, cannibalism, sadomasochism, treason, betrayal, philandering, drug taking, murder, torture, revenge, corruption, and copious amounts of alcohol consumption are balanced against the ideas of family honour, love, loss, ambition, a battle against oppression, nationalism and freedom. The Courtney family at the centre of it all. At times the detailed descriptions of events had me wincing and even sucking in air as Smith drew me into the anger and the hatred. I am left wondering after 23 hours of intense action and adventure whether the ending wasn’t all too convenient and well too mellow! Sasha Courtney starts out as a sharp-minded, ambitious protagonist with a distant relationship with his children but seems to soften and calm towards the end, over-indulging his children creating some interesting outcomes. Similarly Manfred De Le Ray is a calculating and forceful character, it would have been more interesting I think if there were an ulterior motive for Manfred’s cooperation with Sasha played out towards the end, it would have made a good twist, although not a surprising one. As for Sean Courtney, I wonder if we’ll see more of him in subsequent stories and what Smith will do with this diabolical character. I am enjoying Smith’s construction of fictional events interwoven with intimate insights to the non-fiction events of the era. Education and entertainment in one read.

A great book from one of the great writers
Although I have an interest in South African history, especially the period of apartheid and the incarceration of many black leaders, this book is more than that. Like all Smith’s Courtenay series books, this is one of his greatest - perhaps for me because it is in my lifetime - but also because the plot is so crafted and interwoven around the family and it’s characters so vivid, both flawed and exotic. Sean Barrett is the perfect narrator for Wilbur Smith and although struggled at times in his earlier books is now well accomplished with the accents and characterisation. His delivery is almost flawless. Overall one of better books I have listened to. I put these two together up with Dickens for storytelling. Never a dull moment and always a morality tale.

Fantastic read!
Wonderful to experience the complexities of South African history though the eyes and lives of the characters in the book - some fictional characters, many real - a riveting tapestry!
