Publisher's Summary

About those meltdowns, blowups, and one-word answers . . .

Some say that's just how boys are—prone to outbursts or sullenness. But what's behind these and other issues? Drawing from twenty-five years of counseling boys and working with parents, David Thomas sheds light on common emotional struggles, including anger, anxiety, and depression, and shares practical ways you can help your son be

Resourceful—equipped to work through his emotions in constructive ways

Aware—so that he better understands himself, including his strengths and weaknesses

Resilient—having the capacity to cope and feel competent

Empathetic—able to understand the feelings and experiences of others

Helpful also for grandparents, teachers, and anyone else who has a boy in their life, this book shows how a strong emotional foundation leads to a Christ-like sense of masculinity that will serve him well his whole life.

Well worth the read!

An evidence-driven, inspiring & practical guide that weaves Biblical roots through each chapter. Before even finishing this book I started recommending it to my friends who are also parents of boys. I’m grateful for the bold stance this takes for emotional health, for the truth of how that is counter-cultural, and for the aid this provides as a parent of boys.

Be prepared to laugh, cry, be inspired and challenged by this book. I'm implementing many of the suggestions already, and I can say with certainty those tools have helped me parent better. Thank you, David!

Amazing on many levels

I absolutely loved this book - really wish I'd discovered it earlier on my parenting journey as a mom of 2 boys. The author offers practical tools that are simple yet very effective on the daily basis. We started practicing regulation with my eldest, and on my word what a difference it made to both of us!
This is a must read for all parents, not just the boys' parents. It has just the right amount of scripture references and discussion not to feel overwhelming. Absolute gem that I'm now recommending to all my friends and family.

MUST-READ

This is a MUST-READ for anyone raising boys/young men. I love hearing David express his insights in his own voice. What comfort in knowing my kid is normal, and what hope in learning how we, as his parents, can help him choose the better paths in life through learning to Recognize, Regulate, and Repair his emotions and relationships. This book is practical and relatable. David Thomas's ministry is such a gift!

A must read for any parent!

I follow the Raising Boys & Girls podcast. I’ve been learning from the folks at the star since I became a parent. I truly thought that I had heard it all, but listening to David Thomas read this book aloud was priceless. Now I must go but the actual book so that I don’t have to listen again to take notes. There was so much packed into this book that will be used as a reference from now until forever more in my parenting journey! It is full of scriptures, reminders, questions, and concrete ideas. Thank you for all that you did to bring us this work!

More Helpful than I could’ve dreamed

Everyone warned you about the terrible twos but not about the falling apart fives. We are in the emotional trenches with our kindergarten aged boy and I was desperately searching for ways to help him (and ourselves) with navigating this season. I had no idea what was in store for us when he went off to kindergarten and I am so glad I listened to this 3 weeks in. I couldn’t stop listening. I was hanging onto every word, taking notes when I could. I ordered the tangible copy also because the intentional practices at the end of the chapters are gold. I just finished listening and I am eager to skim back through the book and highlight and make notes again as I put some of these tools into practice into our home. There is so much insight and information on what you’re little (or big) guy is thinking and feeling and trying to process while I’ve just been seeing him shut down. I have told all my boy moms about this book and also have multiple books written by David on my wishlist to read or listen to next. Thank you for this guide! I am so grateful!
