Story
The human race has turned to dust. August Morrison faces it after rising from the depths of a dark matter research facility in Arizona. His co-workers. His daughter. All of them: dust. Friends and colleagues around the world don’t answer their phones. The city of Phoenix burns. He is alone. As a world without mankind starts to crumble, August fights not just for survival, but for his very sanity. On the other side of the country, Poe McDowell watches her parents crumble into dust just moments after being shoved inside a coffin-like device that spares her from the same fate.

Freeman is a genius with an uncommon mixture of memory, intelligence, and creativity. He lives in a worldwide utopia, but it was not always so. There was a time known as the Grind - when Freeman's people lived as slaves to another race referred to simply as "Master". They were property. But a civil rights movement emerged. Change seemed near, but the Masters refused to bend. Instead, they declared war. And lost. Now, the freed world is threatened by a virus, spread through bites, sweeping through the population. Those infected change - they are propelled to violence, driven to disperse the virus.

Refuge, New Hampshire, is a small town. The kind found on postcards. Their biggest concern is the rowdy summertime revelers making their way up from Massachusetts and New York. And with most of the town's residents in neighboring Ashland, for the Fourth of July fireworks show, Refuge is quieter than usual. That is, until the Baptist church's bell starts ringing - on its own. The bell chimes faster and faster, reaching a frenetic pace, as though rung by the Devil himself. But the bell is just the beginning.

I saddly wasted a credit.
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Don't get me wrong, I love the genre and the Arctic setup made it the more appealing to me. The story is ok , and the adventure is sometimes fun, it's just that the pace is all weird. This happens, and then he dies, then this happens and this happens and then she dies ( orca! ).
There is no mounting drama, or real setup of the actions, a bit of atmospheric ambiance.
Also the characters are having ridiculous profound interrogations in the middle of life-treatening crisis : " I'm going to get frozen to death/ blown to pièces/crushed/ mawled/ dismembered, but do I love her ? what did she mean when she told this or that ; maybe we'll hook up later!? "
I've read and listened many books setup in the Artic or other dire places ( like Koonts "ice limit" and Preston/ child " beyond the ice limit " and "terminal freeze" by the latter, but come on !
There are many things that can be done with such a promising pitch. It was a big disapointment. The book tends to get a bit better when the enter the SPOILER space ship, but that's about it.
Also pardon my English, I am french and I might have made some mistakes writing a review and mispelling some words while criticizing someone else's work. It's actually the first time I write a review and this was a big let down.
So if you're looking for a basic rollercoaster with lots of action and aliens, and not much else ( science or interesting and atmospheric setups), this is your treat.
Has Raising the Past turned you off from other books in this genre?
absolutely not.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jeffrey Kafer’s performances?
I'm sorry but I cannot. The narrator delivers every single phrase in the exact same manner, in some sort of intense way , and by chapter four I could take it no more. This is a first review that I write on audible, and before that book I have purchased all 13 books from Jim Butcher's Dresden Files in a 2 month span ( and listened to them all bying extra crédits), with amazing James Maarsters as performer. I'm good public but I disliked the narration
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I really feel the raw material was great

Disappointing
As a writer myself, I do not like being the critic a great deal. From a rather implausible yet interesting scenario, the story fades away to a ho-hum account of apparently 2 opposing alien races lurking on Earth waiting for a beacon of sorts to be activated, thus plunging we homo saps into another galactic battle. We are saved by an intrepid team, led by a guy with serious personal problems, including an emotional freeze, but shucks, it comes good for him by the end. With regret, I'm sorry I wasted a credit or money on this book. It should qualify for the next $4.49 sale. Furthermore, the narration was a little strange with different pronunciations of the same word but put this down as an oldster being pedantic.
Again with regret, this book doesn't meet the standard.

Great performance of a typically formulaic story.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book to someone looking for a good uninvolved listen.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I thought more effort should have been put into the woman found in the wooly mamoth. That was the teaser after all...
Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I liked his performance in this book.
Could you see Raising the Past being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
It could end up as a SyFy made for tv movie.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The narrator did not do this book justice. I'm not getting into it like I feel I should. Doubt that I'll buy more with this narrator. Story line is great!
What other book might you compare Raising the Past to and why?
James Rollins' earlier books
Would you be willing to try another one of Jeffrey Kafer’s performances?

I wanted to like it.
I have listened to a couple of his books. The premise always sounds really interesting. What I have a hard time with is the love stories. So many of his books the characters fall in love like a young adult novel. Some kind of adventure will be happening and then wammo some gushy love story element to it. Its distracting.

This story is just OK.
The story itself is just OK. The concept was interesting but the execution was a bit lacking. The author could have done with a bit of research on living and working in actual arctic conditions. Especially while exposed to the elements i.e. wet from immersion or with missing clothing. I also find it hard to believe that any paleontologist worth the title would ever suggest that modern humans evolved from Neanderthals. I figured out the plot about half way through and, unfortunately, was not disappointed. Oh and the narrator sounds like the bad guy from The Matrix.

Average story, well presented.
Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this book, free of charge, in exchange for an honest review..
The thing that I've always liked about Jeremy's work is his monsters. Be it Kaiju, Gargoyles, Hydras or any one of the other amazing creatures he includes in his works. It was therefore with great excitement that I came to see what the marrying of a woman frozen in prehistory and some form of ancient civilisation could offer.
What I found was a war between two races of aliens and their battle to control or lead mankind for their own aims. This leads to many chases, battles and the discovery of wonderfully imagined ideas of weapons created to suit the era where the Aeros and Feros found themselves.
I liked some parts of the book, there is a brilliantly scene early on with an attempted assassination and the sense of tension can be cut with a knife but, aside from some twists, the box was just pretty humdrum to me. I did like the final revelations and how the story was 'wrapped up' but I just couldn't help but feel I was expecting more than I found here. As always though, Jeffrey Kafer does an amazing job of voicing the two main characters and gives the foes a sufficiently dangerous manner and voice.
So not my favourite book from Jeremy but an ok book none-the-less.

I am a fan of Jeremy Robinson’s work and am slowly working through the back catalogue. This was, again, a fun, mind-bending adventure, well worth the time.
