Publisher's Summary

Ralph and Smith are flatmates and best mates - until, that is, the gorgeous Jemima moves in. Then suddenly, they're bickering about a lot more than who drank the last beer. Of course, Jem knows that one of them is the man for her - but is it Ralph or Smith?

Upstairs, Karl and Siobhan have been happily unmarried for 15 years - until, that is, Cheri moves into the flat above theirs. Cheri's got her eye on Karl and doesn't see why she should let a little thing like his girlfriend stand in her way....

Sooner or later, it’s all got to come to a head - and what better place for tears and laughter, break-ups and make-ups than Ralph's party?

lisa newell’s debut novel

I can forgive Ms. Jewell for this because it was her debut novel and a reflection of its time. But Christ, this didn’t age well.

[spoiler alert]

There’s one point where a secondary female character behaves obnoxiously and one of the main male characters assaults her in angry retaliation. And the episode is brushed aside as if it was a completely reasonable thing for him to do.

Another (main) female character literally has no other personality trait besides being fat. As if all fat people think about nothing but their body all the time. And at one point she’s complemented with something along the lines of “You wouldn’t look great in a miniskirt, but...” and is somehow flattered?

I could go on and on but yeah to sum it all up: this ain’t it.

Another Lisa Jewell Masterpiece

Loved the story and loved the narration! Can’t you write any faster?😂 This might be my favorite one so far!

Love the Twists!

Lisa Jewell gives her stories just the right twists and turns to make you think you have guessed it, but you haven't! Sometimes, this one gets a little depressing, but pulls itself out of it just in time. Not all of the loose ends are tied up, but enough that you can let your own imagination roam and draw the conclusions you prefer. All in all, a good read!

Can’t take the narration anymore

The song-song tones for every character “s voice are annoying. No one talks like that! And 30-year old men do not remain celibate for 5 years because they moon over a neighbor, and they don’t chide themselves for falling in love too fast. Come on!

Fun Story

Enjoyed this early book of Lisa Jewell's. But the stellar narration stole the show! Bravo Ms Church!

Narration was exceptional!

Maybe I am prude, but this one had too much graphic language and description....not a fan. The story was cute, the characters and layout were interesting... overall a good story! ...but the narration was the only reason I kept it!

My First Review

Not her best book. I’m sure it’s one of her first ones, and she has definitely improved! I wish I had listened to this one before the sequel. I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t already known what came after. It’s worth a listen though.

Excellent from the start

This was one of those books that I started and after a few chapters realized I was reading a book I couldn’t put down and didn’t want to end! Lots of similar names of characters which was a bit tricky for me and my sporadic opportunities to read. 😬 but not to hard to figure out and quite a few wonderful different stories to follow through this book. Read it!!!!!!

Performance 10 stars

I usually just give stars, but I wanted to express my full appreciation for the narrator. She was exquisite.
