Story
Wilson shot a glance over his right shoulder at San Ramon. In addition to the blinking of anti-aircraft artillery guns, he could see clouds of smoke on the field from the numerous Slash hits. Breathing through his mouth, he concentrated on getting fast and maintaining a slight climb. Bright fireballs of AAA shot by him in groups of three and four, orderly trails from low to high. His body was tense, ready for impact. He felt and heard the thud behind, on his right.

Sure to rank as one of the greatest aviation memoirs ever written, Viper Pilot is an Air Force legend's thrilling eyewitness account of modern air warfare. From 1986 to 2006, Lt. Col. Dan Hampton was a leading member of the Wild Weasels, the elite Air Force fighter squadrons whose mission is recognized as the most dangerous job in modern air combat. Weasels are the first planes sent into a war zone, flying deep behind enemy lines purposely seeking to draw fire from surface-to-air missiles and artillery. They must skillfully evade being shot down - and then return to destroy the threats, thereby making the skies safe for everyone else to follow.

In the desolate middle of the largest ocean on earth, two great navies approached, one bent on conclusive battle, the other lying in ambush. Six months after Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto again crossed the Pacific with the largest and most powerful naval armada the world had ever seen, this time to finish the job. Nimitz waited for him with what he had, placed exactly where he needed it. Both admirals depended on their fliers, some veterans of battle, others raw and unproven. The United States is under attack. From the sea and the sky, the devastating attacks come, crippling the US military's ability to respond. Thousands have been killed and injured. For President Cord Macklin, this is the greatest challenge of his life, greater than risking his life in the skies over Vietnam and greater than guiding the country through some of the most trying times. But none has been more trying than this. Below the sea, a predator stalks the pride of America's Navy: its aircraft carriers. Deadly and silent, this killer seems able to elude all efforts to find it.

Publisher's Summary
For a moment Wilson froze and looked at the white-helmeted pilot who sat high on the nose of the colossal fighter. Across the small void, he saw the pilot's eyes peer over his mask. Dark, chilling eyes. Wilson kicked right rudder to slide closer and jam any chance for a bandit gunshot. When the bandit pulled all the way over, almost on its back but in control, he cursed in frustration at what he knew was coming next. The hostile fighter reversed over the top in a negative-g maneuver, his nose tracking down on Wilson like a falling sledgehammer in slow motion. Horrified, Wilson realized he faced an imminent snapshot. With the little air speed he had, he inverted his Hornet to avoid the attack. His aircraft still rolling, Wilson saw that the monster had another weapon at its disposal.

Fantastic Read for Military/Aviation Enthusiasts!
I listened to this book in its entirety and it genuinely made my commutes to work the highlight of the day. It is very well performed and written, crafted very well for the military thriller market. That is to say, do not expect to be reading the greatest thing ever written ever, just extremely good by military fiction standards.
The scenarios are grounded in reality, and while at the edge of plausible sometime, are not outside the realm of possibility. There are many low-rent military thrillers out there that you could waste your time with. Captain Miller's books here, especially this one, out-classes all of them.
The story takes places around the Persian Gulf, showing all sides from command, to the pilots, to the opponents. There is enough characterization and emotional investment that the events of the story have an impact, but it does not shy away from the hard military enthusiast details.
That said, it is very much technical in that aspect, as the happenings with F/A-18s and other aircraft are declared with stunning accuracy and detail. But it would read as a long string of acronyms or techno-aviation jargon for those uninitiated. To really dig into this book, you should be probably have some knowledge of military aviation.
To hear a voice actor paraphrase and use onomatopoeia imitating the bleeps and jingles inside a cockpit is something to behold, and done very well.
In closing, this is a great listen and a great book - For those into military aviation fiction. Fully recommended, if that is your area of interest.

Great Insights Into Naval Aviation
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Unfortunately, there were times I had to rewind and relisten to certain parts because I got lost in the midst of overwhelming naval jargon. As an former army guy, who spent time working with the navy, it brought back some memories - both good and bad. The story is engaging as he weaves just the right amount of action to keep my interest and now I find I want to know more about Lt Cdr Wilson - so I guess I'm buying the next book in the series.

Amazing story and one of the best books I ever read. As a retired Naval Officer I felt every emotion and experience of the characters in this compelling story. The authors level of detail was on point. I went from laughter to tears throughout listening to this well narrated book and hated knowing I was near the end because I wanted the story to continue. Enjoyable for a very specific audience
I really enjoyed this, but mainly because I am learning to fly a (virtual) Hornet in DCS World. There is a lot of detail on procedures and controls that would probably slow things down too much for the general reader but for me we’re fascinating and gave a bit of colour and detail to things I had been reading about elsewhere, as well as getting a better idea of what the pilots get up to when they’re not in the cockpit.
I did grow to enjoy the characters, and found myself rooting for them. My only criticisms here are that there is little ambiguity - each is basically either a goody or a baddy with no redeeming features. Also it is hard to criticise the writing of female characters when I am male myself, but they spend much of their non-flying time thinking about men - it is a little bit cringey at times.
The flying scenes are great if you have enough background knowledge to understand what is going on. Even the non-combat scenes can have an enormous amount of tension.
Highly recommended if you are interested in naval aviation, but probably not otherwise.

Naval Saints?
While this story is exciting and technically interesting, I couldn't get past the felling that it belonged in some modern propaganda book somewhere. We all know that the people in armed forces across the world are courageous and worthy of respect but this almost drifts into nauseating overtones of "USA the Holy". If you can get past this then you will find the story exciting, emotional and certainly heart felt, given that it was written by a retired USN officer.
