Publisher's Summary

Irresistibly action-packed and full of lethal surprises, this stunning new fantasy series from Victoria Aveyard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Red Queen series, begins where hope is lost and asks: When the heroes have fallen, who will take up the sword?

A strange darkness grows in Allward.

Even Corayne an-Amarat can feel it, tucked away in her small town at the edge of the sea.

She soon discovers the truth: She is the last of an ancient lineage—and the last hope to save the world from destruction. But she won't be alone. Even as darkness falls, she is joined by a band of unlikely companions:

  • A squire, forced to choose between home and honor.
  • An immortal, avenging a broken promise.
  • An assassin, exiled and bloodthirsty.
  • An ancient sorceress, whose riddles hide an eerie foresight.
  • A forger with a secret past.
  • A bounty hunter with a score to settle.

Together they stand against a vicious opponent, invincible and determined to burn all kingdoms to ash, and an army unlike anything the realm has ever witnessed.

When does it start?

Went into this book with high hopes because I liked the Red Queen series. I was bummed. It just felt like nothing was happening. I kept waiting and waiting and then the book was over. Maybe wait until she finishes the rest of the series before starting. Just felt like I wasted 10+ hours.

Good Fantasy, but the pacing

So it is really an interesting story. It took me a bit to understand the world and spindles as no one says exactly what they are clearly. my only problem is pacing. There was too much unnecessary elements and just when the story was finally getting somewhere, it changes perspective to a less interesting plot. there are six different perspectives in the book.

Loved It

Very captivating and enjoyable to listen to. I really liked the characters and world building in this story (a lot more than I thought I would actually). Many pieces of a whole, all with their parts to play. I can't wait for the next book!

Boring with hints of something better

I wanted to like this book, but it was a disappointing follow up to The Red Queen series. The world she created was not strong enough to suspend my belief, nor could I maintain interest long enough to keep some of the characters straight. A disappointment all around.

Predictable, Boring

I really enjoyed some of Aveyard’s early work, but this was not her best. The story line was really predictable and anticlimactic. I kept waiting for the story to get better and finally the booked ended, leaving me relieved to be done. I won’t be reading book 2.

Narrator was below average at best.

😞 Disappointing

I kept thinking, surely it will get better... but didn't. Irritatingly drained me to listen

Good but not great

I really loved her other series, so maybe I was expecting too much. the storyline is great. lots of good characters. different and fast paced. but I was not 100% invested. I hope the next book builds on this foundation.

I like Aveyard’s other works more, but this one is okay!

My biggest thing that kept me from getting invested is the audiobook narrator switching between British accent and American English- she uses the British accent for character’s voices but not for anything else. The switching was just hard for me to get past.

The story is fine! I’m a much bigger fan of her other works, but that doesn’t mean this one isn’t good.

Slower read.

I really enjoyed the Red Queen series, but this was just slow. I didn't connect with any of these characters as well as I did with her earlier books
