Story
The cheerleading squad at Shadyside has always been strong, but now there are rumors that lack of funds may mean the end of cheerleading at Shadyside. That would be a shame for Heather Wyatt, who has just transferred from her old school, where she was a star, and is eager to join the squad. There’s only one other girl who stands in her way - rich, spoiled Devra Dalby, who is also trying out for the one open slot. The competition to join the squad is anything but friendly - and it ends in murder. Will Heather make the squad - if there's even a squad anymore - or will she end up dead?

Publisher's Summary
R.L. Stine, New York Times best-selling author of the Goosebumps and Fear Street series - the biggest selling children’s books of all time - delivers a terrifying new adult horror novel centered on a town in the grip of a sinister revolt.
Before there was J. K. Rowling, before there was Stephenie Meyer or Suzanne Collins, there was R.L. Stine. Witty, creepy, and compulsively readable, he defined horror for a generation of young listeners - listeners who have now come of age.
Travel writer Lea Sutter finds herself on a small island off the coast of South Carolina, the wrong place at the wrong time. A merciless, unanticipated hurricane cuts a path of destruction and Lea barely escapes with her life. In the storm’s aftermath, she discovers orphaned twin boys and impulsively decides to adopt them. The boys, Samuel and Daniel, seem amiable and immensely grateful; Lea’s family back on Long Island - husband Mark and their two children, Ira and Elena - aren’t quite so pleased. But even they can’t anticipate the twins’ true nature - or predict that, within a few weeks’ time, Mark will wind up implicated in two brutal murders, with the police narrowing in.
For the millions of listeners who grew up on Goosebumps, and for every fan of deviously inventive horror, this is a must-listen from a beloved master of the genre.

Definitely RL Stine
It wasn't a bad story, in fact I loved the beginning. It became very much like a Goosebumps episode about mid way through however and although I like Goosebumps, I was hoping for something more than a couple of kids who wanted to rule the school. Mr. Stine should probably stick to writing for tweens. If he does attempt another adult novel in the future, perhaps it will be more interesting if he actually centers the story around adults instead of children. It might go over better than this one did.

Stine should stick to young adult books
I'm half way through this book, and I'm still waiting for it to get good. As most of the reviewers have said, I also grew up loving R.L. Stine books. There wasn't an R.L. Stine book in our local library that I hadn't checked out at least twice. So Im really sad that I am finding this book so disappointing. Maybe it's because I've never really bought into the "evil twin" stories, but I'm having a hard time getting into the characters as well as the plot. There isn't a character I have yet to have any emotional attachment to. Most are the characters are two dimensional, especially the children. The whole "Rule the School" thing is getting a little tedious and I've caught myself rolling my eyes several times. It's like a bad remake of Village of the Damned, which I thought was cheesy and stupid at the tender age of 14 when that movie came out.

adult goosebumps
the story is not unlike R.L. Stine's better-known work. This feels like a Goosebumps or Spine Tingler adapted for adults. Like most of Stine's work, the concept is interesting, but the writing leaves a bit to be desired.
The reader doesn't impress, and often mixes up accents. Also, the dude sounds like David Cross.

Disappointing
Despite a good opening involving a devastating hurricane and its aftermath, I was let down by how mundane and boring this story turned out. I didn't find Mark or Lea to be compelling enough as the lead characters, and the twins were poorly conceived cardboard cutouts that were more annoying than threatening. Aside from the story itself, the narration was both the biggest benefit and biggest flaw. I felt like Michael Cerveris gave some of the characters more depth with his performance, but his characterization of the twins was cringe-inducing pretty quickly on. Also, the phrase, "rule the school" was maybe used 100 times, and that got tiring pretty quickly. R.L. Stine can definitely write pulp for the teenage crowd, and I remember his stories fondly from my youth, but I believe he will need to try again in writing for a more mature crowd.

Had hopes from the write up...
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Maybe a teenager?
Has Red Rain turned you off from other books in this genre?
What is this genre?
Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Cerveris’s performances?
Yes - His performance was alright - but then the book had a lot of spoken thoughts that didn't quite come across - especially when they were interspersed with dialogue.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Red Rain?
I would cut out alot - for instance the whole thing with the detective and his ex girlfriend - didn't tell me nearly enough of why he hadn't ever been a hero - I didn't get that he was a jerk - just kind of stupid and desperate and weak. Perhaps it was the voice the reader gave him - it sounded sort of Long Island and street smart but apparently he wasn't that. So the character could have been left from the book as far as I am concerned.
The whole part about Autumn was also stupid. Just self satisfying - like he needed to throw in a little sex and this was how he worked it.
The book started off interestingly enough with the travel writer etc. - then the whole thing with the twins - and her taking them home didn't make sense legally- then all of a sudden they were living in the guesthouse and the whole thing of the killing with the red eyes was sily. There were so many starts in building the characters and then they just dropped off - it was either edited to death or the writer has a serious problem focusing and building and tried to add too many things - and then how the end comes together - weird and silly.
Any additional comments?
I wish I hadn't wasted a credit!

A new favorite!
I loved R.L. Stein as a child, I just recently discovered he wrote adult books. My excitement turned to disappointment after reading the Fear: 13 book, though R.L. didn't write all the stories in it, I thought it was pretty bad. Not giving up on R.L.'s adult collection, I returned Fear: 13 and purchased Red Rain. I'm so glad I did! I really liked this book, it was interesting, entertaining, heartfelt at times, creepy, obviously well written with an awesome plot, cool location and a twist at the end that I did not see coming! Personally, I love a good storm story and a suprise ending, this had both! The narrator was great too, all the different voices and accents he does is pretty impressive and I loved the sound of his voice, especially when he did southern accents. The book does get a little sexually graphic a couple times so it's probably not the best read for teens under 14. It's a must read!

Gripping story with a good twist
If you could sum up Red Rain in three words, what would they be?
A bit of a trip down memory lane, my kids loved Stines books, so I thought I would give it a go!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Red Rain?
The plot has a fairly typical 'old fashioned horror' feel, but I would still recommend it for the creepy kids! Something a bit unusual, if you like James Herbert you will probably go for this.
What about Michael Cerveris’s performance did you like?
I liked the narrator for this, he has the right type of voice for this genre.
