Publisher's Summary

Anxiety is real — but it isn’t the end of your story.

Dr. John Delony knows what anxiety feels like. He’s walked that dark road himself, but he found light and hope on the other side of it. Bringing together his own journey and two decades of counseling and research, he walks you through:

  • The four biggest myths about anxiety and the life-changing truth
  • Practical steps you can take today to start getting your life back
  • Long-term strategies for healing to help you move forward

John will show you that most of what you’ve heard about anxiety is wrong. Things like:

  • If you have anxiety, you’re broken and need to be fixed.
  • Anxiety is a disease that can only be cured with medicine.
  • Anxiety is caused by your genetics.

While mental health is complex, our culture has made anxiety into something it’s not. For the majority of people who face anxiety, the truth is simpler than we think: Anxiety is an alarm. It’s a signal — nothing more and nothing less. Anxiety is simply our body’s way of telling us something is wrong. If we stop and listen, we can calm the alarm and move forward into healing and hope.

Fantastic Explanation and Treatment for anxiety

I am not one who has had much anxiety, other than for extreme situations, including the nightmare leading up to divorce, And when I have procrastinated things that need to be done and have deadlines. This book helps make sense of what anxiety is, what causes it, and what to do about it. And it all makes perfect sense. When I changed my horrible situation, the anxiety went away. When I’m not sweating under a deadline, there’s no anxiety.

Chill Out

A lot of encouragement to "not be anxious" but pretty short on substance. Mostly a book that encourages you to chill out. (My turn of phrase, not his) If you are looking for clinical technics or options for reducing anxiety, this isn't the book.

Very Informative.

I'm a combat veteran struggling with anxiety,
trying to learn ways to control it ok ther than "heres another pill", this book has helped understand it more as for what it is, rather than what people think it is.. which in turn, helps learn to identify the issues/alarms, and how to deal with them.

Not for those with clinical anxiety

Do you have anxiety brought on by this high stress and fast paced world? Does turning off devices, finding a slower paced job and taking things off your schedule make your anxiety go away completely? Then this book will work for you just fine. Now, do you have anxiety that is present no matter the circumstances you are in? This book isn't for you. I've had anxiety since I was a child. I had it before I even knew what it was. It wasn't until I was in a struggling marriage that a therapist brought up anxiety and my whole life was explained. This book gives you the basic lower your stress, calm down and just choose to not be anxious... that's all fine and dandy for most of the world's population. Will it help reduce most anxiety? Sure. I feel anxious even when I don't have a stressful schedule. I feel anxious before large family gatherings. I feel anxious when I have to drive my car I'm the rural area I live in. I manage it with therapy and medication. I started the book as a big Dr John fan with high hopes. I spent the book feeling annoyed said misled. Not great advice for those who have anxiety not brought on by life choices.

Extremely Helpful!

This was an excellent fast read shedding light on the misnomers of anxiety and explaining its true meaning. John explains how anxiety is an alarm signaling a deeper root and then gives short term and long term action items to turn down the alarm. Fantastic!
