Publisher's Summary

Shelby is nervous to start her senior year after spending the whole summer away from home. After all, it's hard to be carefree when you're trying to protect a secret.

Shelby was in a devastating car accident, and everyone in town thinks that she was undergoing more physical therapy in Denver. Instead, Shelby's mother enrolled her in a clinical program to stop the panic attacks that started after the crash. The treatment erased Shelby's memory of the accident, but she can't help feeling as if a piece of herself is missing, that the treatment took more than the doctors claimed.

So when Shelby starts hallucinating a boy with dark and mysterious eyes, she knows it must be a side effect of the clinical program. Except you can't kiss hallucinations. And this boy insists that they know each other and are in love....

Amazingly complex

Every time I thought I knew where the author was going she wasn’t going there. I highly recommend this book even though it is a YA and I’m an old lady

FIVE STARS 🌟

Across the board this book was fantastic and I am a 47 year old woman!!! I wanted to figure out what happened from beginning to the very end and I couldn't. it literally takes up to the end to figure it out. So impressed.

Keep guessing...

Everything you think you know through most of this book is WRONG. Don’t trust your feelings about anyone. And don’t make up your mind too quickly. Very surprising end. Really great story line

Unrealistic

It was a struggle to finish this story. I don't know any 16-year-old boys that would act so over- the- top romantic and in love. That "over-the-top"ness just really made it hard to stay involved with the characters. The mother was also difficult to relate with. Her attitude was unexplained and weird. Not my favorite book.

Super intense

I honestly could have listened to this in one sitting. It was intense and riveting and unexpected. It rang true to actual high school experience and the fact that we feel so deeply but don’t really have the capacity to know what to do with it. The beauty of first love is wild and confusing, and oh so deep. Not a rom com story like a lot of YA, but satisfying and hopeful all the same.

performer did great!

the reading did a great job. it was who ever that edited this together that failed. sentences seemed to stop mid sentence only to start back up, the performer inflection would change half way through a sentence, etc. otherwise great story!

good book after getting use to the lisp narration

i wish it was a movie 🎬 I enjoyed it ( narration lisp wasn't my favorite ) after adapting it was a good free book and emotionally driven. this would be tragic in real life

I don't write great reviews generally.

this was fantastic. the narrator was so into it and performed wonderfully. the story was gripping, I had a hard time getting out of my car that I wanted to hear more.

unexpected

for the first half, you're pretty sure where this book is going. seems like a take on a Nicholas Sparks novel, but then it kinda goes off the rails. and just when you think it's too crazy to come back from, everything is reasonably explained and sorted out. this book gripped my attention from the first chapter to the last word, interesting is probably the best way to describe it. it sort of shifts from romance to mystery so this is a good choice for readers who appreciate both genres.

A very surprising story

Although this is really a YA book, I enjoyed it. The plot was complex and yet simple at the same time. Some decent twists and turns to the story in getting to the truth at the end. I guess it goes to show you can't always forget things in your life no matter how hard you try.
