Publisher's Summary

From the acclaimed, controversial singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor comes a revelatory memoir of her fraught childhood, musical triumphs, fearless activism, and of the enduring power of song.

Blessed with a singular voice and a fiery temperament, Sinéad O’Connor rose to massive fame in the late 1980s and 1990s with a string of gold records. By the time she was 20, she was world famous - living a rock-star life out loud. From her trademark shaved head to her 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live when she tore up Pope John Paul II’s photograph, Sinéad has fascinated and outraged millions.

In Rememberings, O’Connor recounts her painful tale of growing up in Dublin in a dysfunctional, abusive household. Inspired by a brother’s Bob Dylan records, she escaped into music. She relates her early forays with local Irish bands; we see Sinéad completing her first album while eight months pregnant, hanging with Rastas in the East Village, and soaring to unimaginable popularity with her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2U”.

Intimate, replete with candid anecdotes and told in a singular form true to her unconventional career, Sinéad’s memoir is a remarkable chronicle of an enduring and influential artist.

Editor's Pick

A raw, honest memoir from one of rock's most misunderstood musicians
''I don't know no shame,'' sings Sinéad O'Connor in her electrifying breakthrough second single, ''Mandinka,'' and like that song's raw power, the singer unapologetically reveals all—or what she can recall—in her new memoir, Rememberings. From the onset, O'Connor says she's written it in her own voice as if she's having a conversation with someone, and it definitely sounds like that. Mental illness is a central point as she candidly narrates her suffering at the hands of her mother and how it shaped her life. These early chapters are undoubtedly the strongest and truly bring you into her heart, placing the missing pieces of a complex puzzle and cementing her as a true rock legend. While the stories of her early life are traumatic with graphic depictions of child abuse, they evoke compassion for O'Connor. Through it all, she is fearless and owns up to everything she has done. Rememberings is a must-listen, and O'Connor must be commended for calling out hypocrisy wherever she saw it and for staying true to herself in the 34 years since her epic debut LP. —Edwin D., Audible Editor

Seriously the best book!

This book is heartfelt, meaningful, funny, spiritual and is absolutely the best autobiography I have ever read or listened to. Sinead O’Connor has done an amazing job going through her entire life and explaining everything from things that were previously unknown, explaining better things that we thought we knew like going into detail about just how brutal the child abuse she suffered was, and filling in gaps all of her life that she was not in the public. She also explains meaning of many of her songs. Whether you are a fan of Sinead or Connor or not her life is extremely interesting and to hear it told in her voice is wonderful this is a highly highly recommended book!!

As a mother and veteran...

Tore at my heart strings. I just wanted to give little child Sinead a hug.

I always admired that she chose to do what she thought was right even when it was a detriment. What a wonderful world we would have if more people followed their consciences.

Beautiful and authentic

I have always admired Sinead O’Connor as a talented singer and as a fiercely independent woman who never bent to the will of the music industry. This is a bittersweet story of her struggles and her success in putting her music out there on her own terms. This book is at times bawdy and at times reverent and always deeply reflective. I love you Sinead. Thank you for your music which has touched me deeply over the years.

Loved it

An honest book. I loved it. In the first 15 minutes I cried 3 times. I loved Sinead’s first 2 albums when I was in college. I wore out the tapes. I am happy to know the story of why she tore up the picture of the Pope, and I applaud her. It was the right thing to do once you know the context of the incident. Her musical interests took a turn. While she somehow managed to retain her faith, I became atheist. She probably wouldn’t care for me, but I am in awe of her and I congratulate her. The very best for your tour! Maybe you’ll come my way.

I have always loved your voice and beautiful music! Thank you for sharing your life so openly. You are a beautiful person inside and out! I was fortunate enough to visit Ireland in the fall of 2019 and you were the first person I asked about! I can not wait for you to tour. I will be the first person in line if you come to Charlotte NC 😘

Such a beautiful memoir

I can’t tell how many times I cried. I love the way she writes and narrates. Every time she talked about Shane, I cried like a baby. She’s always been a hero of mine, and this just makes her even more so. Thank you, Shuhada Sadaqat, for being you, because it let me be me.
