Publisher's Summary

Report from Engine Co. 82 is the story of one company of New York firefighters battling unimaginable death and destruction every day. Dennis Smith worked as a firefighter in the South Bronx, New York City, and the graphic detail and gripping prose of this firefighting classic drives the most important, accomplished, terrifying audiobook ever published on firefighting. This book struck a nerve within the nation when it was first published 30 years ago. In our troubled times, it gains even greater resonance for those trying to make sense of the deaths of so many New York firefighters on September 11, and for those inspired by the tireless work of firefighters and other rescue personnel in the aftermath of the destruction. Dennis Smith describes the bravery, heroism, camaraderie, and unflinching courage of New York's bravest, demonstrating how firefighters everywhere have become the most respected of American heroes.

Incomplete!

I read this book in the ‘I
80’s and in fact was interviewed by the author Dennis Smith - there is much more to this book.
If you want to hear “The Rest of the Story” read the book

Humbling….

Every time I have read this book… And now I have read it multiple times and now listen to it once… It brings me down to earth, centers me, and humbles me, it reminds me why we do what we do… And we’re not as bad ass as we think we are… These old guys were doing it for real for a long time

Wish i had know it was NOT the full story

I had the book when it first came out but, lost it in one of my moves. If I had know this was an abridged book, I would not have gotten it. Good narration, great story but a lot was left out. Really DISAPPOINTED!!!

Short, excellent, lasting impression

Short, vivid, heartfelt. Should be required reading for all first responders. A piece of history as told through a firefighter's mind and soul. Brilliant.

Amazing story of the brotherhood.

Truly a heartfelt story, one after another. Thankful to be a firefighter, to hear such uplifting stories, to remind us why we do it.

If you liked Dispatches, give it a listen

Concise, descriptive language, and unflinching honesty. This book is an on the ground account of several fires and other calls in the South Bronx in a period of great racial tension. The humanity, suffering, poverty, and anger presented through direct observations.

Heartbreakingly raw

A look into the life of firefighters long retired but their stories of saves and losses remain.
