Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-seller Jennifer A. Nielsen tells the extraordinary story of a Jewish girl's courageous efforts to resist the Nazis.

Chaya Lindner is a teenager living in Nazi-occupied Poland. Simply being Jewish places her in danger of being killed or sent to the camps. After her little sister is taken away, her younger brother disappears, and her parents all but give up hope, Chaya is determined to make a difference. Using forged papers and her fair features, Chaya becomes a courier and travels between the Jewish ghettos of Poland, smuggling food, papers, and even people.

Soon Chaya joins a resistance cell that runs raids on the Nazis' supplies. But after a mission goes terribly wrong, Chaya's network shatters. She is alone and unsure of where to go, until Esther, a member of her cell, finds her and delivers a message that chills Chaya to her core, and sends her on a journey toward an even larger uprising in the works - in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Though the Jewish resistance never had much of a chance against the Nazis, they were determined to save as many lives as possible, and to live - or die - with honor.

Master storyteller

After listening to A Night Divided (also 5*) I gave this one a try and was not disappointed.

The backdrop of the Holocaust and the evil of the Nazis is already fraught with emotion and suspense. Knowing this account is pulled from history, you cannot help but be moved and engrossed. The fictional characters and plot have depth and empathy but there is plenty of action and tension.

This story is at times soul crushing and uplifting. It is a celebration of the human spirit in the darkest of times.

One of my favorites

The book is well written and even though it is labeled as a children’s book I don’t think of it as such… I love stories like this and I hope to read more.

Best book ever! And very realistic

This is the best book ever in my opinion. It’s quite captivating and exciting to a point. The reason why I like it so much is that it’s very realistic compared to other novels. Definitely something I’m going to listen to again

amazing book

What a great book, just enough fiction to keep people listening, (it sure did me) but yet very historical; love it.

Her best book ever!

A gripping tale that opened my eyes about how the Jewish people were treated by the Nazis, and by others, in Poland during WWII. The story is fast moving and although it tore at my heart I had a hard time taking a break.
The reader was excellent.

Enjoyable

Interesting story, giving a good insight into the constant tension and anguish of living as a Jew under a cruel Nazi-driven war. Somewhat long-winded at times though, without a clear storyline. That may be intentional, considering that it's written from an autobiography perspective. Would recommend to younger readers.
