Publisher's Summary

Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary must battle dangers both within and without the Alliance in this exciting continuation of the New York Times bestselling series.

Geary knows that some political factions in the Alliance were just trying to get rid of him when he was assigned to escort a diplomatic and scientific mission to the far reaches of humanity's expansion into the galaxy . . . and beyond. But he views his mission as both a duty and an opportunity to make things better wherever he can. And when a crippled Rift Federation ship tumbles out of jump space, Geary leaps into action. But the survivors' story isn't completely adding up.

As Geary investigates, he soon finds himself fending off spies and assassins while leading the fleet as it fights its way across space controlled by the mysterious and hostile aliens whom humans call enigmas. Challenges arrive at every turn, including an unknown alien species that invites the fleet to visit one of their star systems. With little information to go on, Geary must weigh the benefits of potential new allies against the possibility of a trap. The fate of the fleet—and perhaps even the future of humanity—will depend on him making the right decision.

If he can stay alive long enough to do that.

Great book. Maybe the funniest one yet.

Well I really enjoyed the book. I listened to everything before this over the past month to make it flow best.

I laughed literally out loud a few times and got odd looks from my family. there was a good amount of excitement, distpit the very few space combats. It leaves you wanting more, but isn't a huge cliff hanger.

I recomend this book.

Nothing really happens.

It's hard to say, but this arc of The Lost Fleet series feels a bit stagnant. Nothing really seems to be going on. It's like these are chapters of a larger book. I don't mean that in the same way that books are part of a series. I mean the pacing feels like I should be approaching some kind of climax, but it just falls flat. You can do this kind of thing if you're a great writer. However, I've always felt these have so-so writing with an interesting premise and story elements. When you take those away, you're left with mediocre writing. I'll likely keep up with the story, but I'm hoping for some more action or bigger revelations going forward.

worth the wait

Love this series! So happy the next came out. Narrator does a great job. My only complaint is that there's so much time between books, but I'd rather wait for a good book than have a bunch of drivel pumped out 4 times a year.
Always something new happening, new friends, new enemies, new circumstances & of curse some action, tho this one had less fighting/action than most others. Seemed more centered about figuring things out, plots, diplomacy, chains of command & politics. Doesn't matter, still keeps you engaged & guessing what's going to happen next & sad to see it over so soon!

Ensign Duck is the star of the book.

This book start to finish was Quackers, although I miss the early days without NHI's popping up willy-nilly.

if you made it this far, you know what to expect

formula followed.
good narration, lots of conspiracies and intrigues, some very detailed battles, Admiral Geary remains a paragon, his wife remains weirdly demure but also bloodthirsty, the plot moves forward an inch, on to the next volume...

Loved this one more than the others

This is an excellent book 2 in the series. I enjoyed the old and new characters. I liked the references to characters lost in the past. I miss them because they were such great ones.
There's also a lot of humor and like another reviewer mentioned, I laughed out loud and my family came running to check on me. I also enjoyed the new characters that were introduced in this book, both human and non-human.
But what I really want is to see the star map mentioned in the book :)
Great book!!

Excellent Follow Up!!

I loved this book. An excellent continuation of all the previous books in the Lost Fleet saga. Excellent narration as usual. I love the character displayed by each of the characters in this book & in all the books of this saga. Thank you Jack Campbell for being a most excellent storyteller, strategist & having such insight in what it means to be human & even how things could be very different culture-wise when writing about alien cultures & ways of thinking. Can't wait until the next Outlands book comes out.

I want more.

I hope there will be many more of these. If you have been with the series from the beginning, by all means get this. If not, start at the beginning. This is enjoyable but not a critical part of the saga.

One more great space opera.

Fun and interesting dilemmas face fun and interesting characters. If you enjoyed the previous books in this series you will enjoy this one. I really enjoy the problems of trying to understand aliens and figure out how to interact with them. Voice reading is fantastic with it being easy to keep characters straight in the story.

Not as good as the first one

I like the narrator, however the story was too slow. Too much time setting up things, but it does seem a little rushed.

The main reason for the story doesn't seem to be explored enough.

It was okay.

excellent continuation of the series

I really like this series and this was a good book which I enjoyed.
There is something a bit wrong with the narration this time, it seems to have been sped up, I found listening on 80% have the same great narration as the rest.

Another Exciting Installment

I enjoyed this story which fitted nicely into the saga. It feels like the recording may have been sped up though to make it shorter. It was a much faster pace than previous performances by Christian. I ended up listening to it at 0.9x speed.

Good start but ending feels rushed.

Carries on the series but ending feels a bit rushed, some of the significant action happens away from the main character.

Looking forward to the next book!

I always look forward to around June each year when Jack Campbell releases a new book and this one didn’t disappoint. Loved the interplay with Midways representatives aboard Dauntless. Looking forward to the next one. He really does space battle and light speed lag like no other author I’ve read.
