Publisher's Summary

You are no one. Level zero. Empty of mind and memory. Even your past has been stripped from your brain by the inscrutable System.

A long, difficult road lies between you and remembering any part of who you are. A road punctuated with one death after another. You are too puny to survive by might alone. Information is the single resource that might keep you alive, but the brainless “digis” have none of it. Only those with experience can give you what you need, but most care nothing about you or your plight. In fact, some make it their mission to kill you.

So die you will, again and again, your life counter clicking lower and lower. Even the creators do not know what happens when your counter reaches zero, but many are sure that your last life here is just that. No more respawns.

You are not the first player in the world of STYX, and you will not be the last. You can only hope luck will be on your side. The luckiest players are those who find a vulnerability in the System. Those they call cheaters.

Perhaps cheating is the only way to win.

Enjoy your game.

Garbage

Let’s be clear this book isn’t for adults. If you listen to the plot line you know that it’s not for an adult at all. I have listened to a lot of Lit RPG books and this is one for children, because the MC Rock, Rocky or Cheater or whatever name he wants to go by gets fixated on the first woman he sees. He had other people who tried to help him, but only the woman is the one is the one he locks on to and he apparently doesn’t take a hint and knows when to stop. Apparently sexual harassment isn’t a thing in this world because, even after she said no, so many time Rock seems to think sex is more important than his life, because he endangers himself learning about the world to try to have sex with her. Yeah not for me at all. Save those credits people and pick something else.

MC is an idiot and mistreats women

I thought the premise of the book was interesting. The MC keeps makes poor decision after poor decision. His treatment of the female character he meets is terrible. I had to quit as I wanted him to die painfully, over and over. I doubt I will try other books by this author as this book was so distasteful.

I recommend giving this one a hard pass.

Characters are unlikable

I like the litrpg genre, but this one just makes me uncomfortable. The main characters are both extremely unlikable. Main male lead is a misogynist and the main female lead is just rude to personify that this new world is harsh and unforgiving. The constant friction between the two just devolve the premise to childish insults and vapid banter.

Glad I didn't refund it!

The MC was just someone I couldn't stand and the author almost lost me as a customer. I hung in there and the story and characters got better and I'm waiting on book 2 to hopefully clarify some things. It's a good book and the litrpg is interesting. it's worth a credit but hey I like litrpg.

Excellent

I went in blind on this one. I assumed from the title that this was a litrpg and was correct. While not a traditional it does have game mechanics in a modern like setting. I didn't know what to expect but what I got was better than I imagined. This story had great character development and interesting world building. Be advised it has some darker tones to it. But I am very interested to see what book two brings to the table.

Edit: Revisited the book after a while and my opinion has completely changed. While I like the later installments, this book is bad. It starts of fairly interesting, but the main character act like a prechooler with the mouth of an adult. He just says everything on his mind and most of it is horrible when it comes to one character.

That being said you could probably skip this book :/

Not worth a credit

The way the author describes women is absolutely appalling—and based on the reviews I’m now reading, it gets worse. Add to it that the MC is as dumb as his name implies and it’s clear that this book is not worth the time or money.

Dumbest MC, even worst world building

barely anything is explained, nothing in the world makes sense, the MC is dumb as a rock and every decision he makes seems random, he just falls for the first girl he meets for no reason even and insists on it even when she clearly isn't interested, full of unnecessary innuendos. just bad overall, feels like it was written by a kindergarten AI on shrooms

Don't read

End of chapter 10 is a total deal breaker. Not only is MC unreasonably dumb he's a mysoginist ass hole. Nothing like relishing in the impending rape of your fellow prisoner just because she's disfigured and a little bit (understandably) pissed off at our brain dead moron of a MC.

Who the fuck gave this guy 99 lives anyway?

No interest in reading any further.

Author lacks talent and can not craft characters

Plot idea and premise, great and novel approach. But the author is not skilled or talented enough to be attempting to write a story as complex as this one. The constant terrible dialogue and failed attempts to create mystery by having NO one answer any questions or by only providing less than half explanations. Only ends up showing that the author had no idea how to pace or use plot devices.

Then add the fact that every character suffers from the worst dialogue and character crafting possible... MC, side characters to even every interaction with the mobs is cringe worthy.
Again this is just further proof that this author was blind to his lack of ability and character crafting to believe this mess of a book is finished or worth making the public suffer through.

A Overall Good LitRPG Unfairly Criticised

The overall story is good but not great, the premise is very different which is what makes it unique and worth a listen, the MC spawns into the continent which is controlled by the system as a level zero without any memories, not only has the system locked away their memories but it also impedes their ability to think clearly and to some extent their intelligence and reasoning skills everything in the world is tied to the system, overtime the MC can overcome these limitations by levelling but at the start they are basically just a idiot with no clue of what to do or how they ended up in the continent.

Now people criticise heavily various elements to the story mainly that the MC when he first meets Kitty thinks she is a guy, at the time Kitty is covered head to foot in mud, dirt and blood has a smashed up face, broken jaw, half her teeth missing a swollen tongue, not to mention was at one point strangled damaging her larynx and is wearing a makeshift vest filled with straw.

Given the situation and his mental ineptitude due to the system the MC's conclusion was fair, Kitty is not exactly the best of company either and is extremely hostile, rude, insulting and generally awful to the MC when they first meet which MC reciprocates in kind, Kitty ultimately decides to help the MC as she remembers how hard being a level zero was despite their mutual displeasure of each other, When the MC sees Kitty after they respawn he immediately sees his mistake but that doesn't really help the animosity between them however over time this changes.

At one point the MC describes their type of woman or what they think is their kind of woman as they have no memories and are not sure, some listeners found that sexist because he stated Kitty was not his type but still cute, the story very is much guy meets girl, girl meets guy, they don't get along at the start but grow to care about each other along the way a pretty common scenario though told in a more unique setting, not really sure why listeners took issue with such a common story plot.

The book does discuss the topic of rape which maybe a deal breaker for people, to be perfectly clear the author does not write any scenes or give any graphic detail of any sexual assault in the book but it does discuss the topic with regards to Kitty's past traumatic experiences and her current situation and the threat she is under from the main villain Romeo. It is also important to state that the MC hates the character of Romeo in the story who Kitty states gets pleasure from assaulting women and goes above and beyond to help her.

Kitty has a pretty emotional backstory you learn throughout the book and explains why she acts how she does, very untrusting not without good reason and as the MC gets to know her better he regrets their first encounter and how he acted, Kitty also regrets her actions to some extent too.

Some listeners took offence to the way the word 'gay' was used in the story as a childish insult against one of the characters who is not gay, for me I did not see it as a issue as it was barely used but other listeners seen it as homophobic, personally I think that is a overstretch the author uses no homophobic slurs nor does the MC or Kitty perpetuate any homophobia, the author even includes the fact Kitty is bisexual and includes another character who is in a lesbian relationship all discussed and described positively something other reviewers decidedly leave out.

As to the claims of misogyny and sexism the author makes great strides to show how strong Kitty and other female characters discussed are, regardless of the situation Kitty shows not just her strength as a fighter but also as a person with regards to everything she endures throughout the events of the book.

Overall the books worth a listen if the above does not bother you and the ending leaves you excited for the next book in the series, hopefully my impartial review addressing some issues helps you.

The sexism ruins it.

I thought it was a decent enough story, until Kitty was introduced. I stoped reading after the author creepily described in great detail, vicariously through the mc, his dream women. Then proceed to describe Kitty as having unfortunate features and how she was not his type, but how he still thought she was cute.

I'm not a fan

The story is very mediocre, the characters are very little sense and the constant bickering is annoying. I like the idea about enemy types but the leveling up systems makes no sense. the guy is killing things 37 levels higher but only goes up by one level. so many things in this book make no sense.

Nope. To simple

Other than being bigoted (Gay is an insult), there is to much emphasis put on telling you how they have reacted to what they have done.
Worse is that it is overly simplified.
Coupled with aiming to an American audience with slang terms and mannerisms that would suit a fist happy Jock not some one with the power to think.

Incel survival fantasy

Continually degrading and harassing women, then repeatedly talking casually about sexual assault does not create a gritty, ‘reality of hard life’ ambience. The protagonist that would die to protect his comrade can’t decide between joking about, carrying out or belittling said comrade with sexual abuse from page to page

Sexism intensifies

Honestly, not a terrible story. The main problem stems from the main character.
He is aggressive, needlessly malicious and cannot seem to come to any conclusions under his own volition. The problem is with the main character in the intensified when the ‘Love interest’ is introduced to him.
Immediately, he is hostile towards her. At first mistaking her for a man and then continuously pointing out how ugly, unattractive and all-around repugnant she is. After sometime the main character fantasises in GREAT detail what his perfect woman would look like. However, despite all this he still pursues her romantically. Even after being rejected and told about a traumatising past of hers which repels her from ever being with a man. This lack of decency continues and only grow stronger even immediately after being told about this traumatising backstory. Honestly it’s actions like this and the lack of any kind of redeeming feature that really ruins this entire narrative as we as the reader are stuck within the main characters head and he is quite an appalling person.

The story would have been possibly a 2–3 star if it weren’t for this hideous excuse for a main character that gives men a terrible name.

Plus, rape should not be casually used as a plot point to be joked about and tossed around like it’s a harmless character motivation. It’s sick how this author has included themes of harassment, rape, unwanted attention and objectification.

Good Concept, Awful Main Characters.

I really liked the concept and mystery of the world. Too bad the main characters have the worst personalities and their dialogue gets extremely repetitive.
