Publisher's Summary

The award-winning Restoration is one of Rose Tremain's most popular works, and showcases her remarkable talent for capturing historical settings and personalities. Set during the English Restoration in the decadent court of King Charles II, the novel weaves a story of corrupted innocence, betrayal, love and hope against a fascinating historical backdrop.

Written in the first person, the fortunes of the fallible but charismatic courtier Robert Merivel are utterly compelling. Restoration lyrically evokes the rich tapestry of 17th-century London life.

Sucked me in

Here again I am not enamored of the king (Charles II) or the time period during which this novel is set but I took a chance and once more was very happily surprised. This story is told from the point of view of a commoner, Merivel, who is brought into the king's intimate circle. After falling from grace, he is cast out amongst the lower echelons of London society. The author runs the gamut of experiences through Merivel's eyes-from the Great Fire of London to an asylum for the insane. I loved the book and the narration.

Extraordinary

Fantastic story. I have read a lot of Rose Tremain and admire her writing greatly. This was unsurprisingly fascinating, but the narrator, Rupert Degas, brought the whole thing to life in a way that far outstripped my imagination when I had read the book previously. A proof in point as to what audio books are all about.

Engrossing and fantastic narration

This was a one day listen.. I was unwell and just wanted to disappear into a book and Restoration was perfect. I check out whatever Rupert Degas narrates as I think he is amongst the best, and this did not disappoint.
