Publisher's Summary
From New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, Jana DeLeon, Resurrection in Mudbug, aka The Return of Helena Henry!
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the bayou…
Jadyn St. James is excited to start her job as game warden in Mudbug, Louisiana, and hopes it is the beginning of a new and improved life. She expected to run across any number of odd occurrences in the small bayou town, but she never thought her life would be in danger within a matter of days. And that’s not even the worst thing. Helena Henry was hell on wheels - both alive and dead - when she resided in Mudbug, and a year in heaven hasn’t improved her one bit. Now, she’s back and has brought trouble with her.
When it becomes apparent that a major crime is occurring in Mudbug, Colt Bertrand is more than frustrated to be saddled with an inexperienced game warden, especially one who looks like Jadyn. But it soon becomes apparent that they need to put their differences aside if they expect to solve the crime, and more importantly, stay alive.

Lost a little love here
This book takes a turn away from the previous format of this series. This time we are going all cozy and juts a flirtation. I ended up starting this series with the 6th book, so I know this "romance" will be draw out over the next book as well. So, do not go into this looking for a HEA, not yet anyway.
This major change in the format wasn't something I loved. It is one of the reasons the series has lost a star. The other reason is the fat bashing. I am sick of it! It is so very uncalled for, sure Helena isn't helping with her wardrobe, but the catty comments pissed me off. Being a curvy girl, I take offence. It was not needed at all for the story and just made me dislike the lead, who I otherwise loved.
I enjoyed the overall mystery here, it wasn't very solvable, but that wasn't a biggie. I enjoyed the journey. Helena is a riot when she gets into the thick of it and forgets she is dead.
Jadyn and Colt are the main characters this time around. They don't have a romance, more of an animosity/flirtation. Most of the book comes from their POV, but there are also scenes from the supporting cast and the bad guys. Those inside thoughts are no help in identifying the villain.
No hanky panky here, bummer. Can't have steam if there isn't a romance.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Johanna Parker, who is fantastic. I love the gentle roll to her Southern accents, they are light but distinct. The pace is quick enough to keep the reader engaged and her energy is wonderful. Great voices that stayed distinct and consistent.
I am really enjoying this series and I hope future books have less fat shaming. Although, I will say Helena gives it right back! She has enough sass to keep me in a good mood!
Disclosure – I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts opinions and ratings are my own.

Over the fat shaming and sexism
I’ve been pushing through with this series because I like the overall story, but I can’t listen to any more. Every single book drops a dozen or more comments on how fat Helena is and how inappropriate her clothing choices are. How does this add anything to the story?? Insulting someone’s weight is not a way to develop relatable characters. It’s a crass attempt at humour and is lazy writing. In this particular book, I was also annoyed at the representation of women and the sexism present, particularly at the beginning. Women in traditionally male jobs is an excellent thing to incorporate, but I think then having Jayden use her ‘womanly wiles’ really reduced this addition to a parody. All in all, while I enjoy the concept of the series, I’m really really over the execution. You can have a fun, sexy mystery without insulting 3/4 of the population (women and overweight people) as all it does is make the characters seem shallow and annoying,

Very entertaining
Where does Resurrection in Mudbug rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It is difficult to rank "Resurrection" without the companion books in the series, for me they compliment each other. but among my audio collection I would have to say the entire series rank #1 for me at current.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Helena Henry is my favorite and the funniest character in theses series. I was a little sad when I finished reading "Showdown in Mudbug" and Helena "ascended" :). I was ecstatic to hear that she return in the very next book. I really feel that she makes the book worth reading. U can never imagine what her next antic will be.
What about Johanna Parker’s performance did you like?
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Johanna Parker, I am amazed at how she can capture each character, and the voice bring the characters to life. I have a habit now of selecting my audio book by the narrator first, then the content. Ms. Parker is at the top of my list of narrators.
Any additional comments?
Keep writing similar and by all means employ Ms. Parker to narrate

Can I move to Mudbug?
Another good installment. This one is missing the sex, but as that was not a major part of previous stories, that's OK. There are smoldering moments, and catty comments, and appreciative looks. That's enough. :-)
The first day on the job has been pretty rough for our main character, but she has walked into a job working near a relative she has not been allowed to be around before, who jumps in to be supportive. Her mother did not think that her Mudbug relatives were good enough, and Marrisa proves her wrong. I wish that there had been a chapter or 2 spent on that background. It sounds like that could be a really good story! People die, and it gets kind of gory and dangerous. There is also backstory on our male main character that I would like to hear more about.
This story seems to be missing a couple of chapters. Oh well. It was still very good, and I finished it in about 24 hours. As always, a good, light read. It's full of characters that I enjoy hearing about, and I think I would like to meet and probably live next-door to. I figured out who the bad guy was pretty quickly, but that didn't cut out the fun of watching Helena make an idiot of herself, or the others try to figure out the puzzle of who did what.

LOVE THIS SERIES
What did you love best about Resurrection in Mudbug?
This whole series is very cute and I find myself laughing out loud at some of Helena's antics. Can't wait to continue the series. Great for my commute. Some folks don't care for the southern drawl, but I'm from the south and it doesn't bother me at all.

the sample is the best part
This series has unfortunately become too formulaic for me. There is always a beautiful women, who of course downplays her beauty. There is always a smoking hot guy who can't resist her, even when it jeapordizes his job. At least in this one the two don't end up as a couple right off the bat; that is will probably happen in the next book, after all how many gorgeous people can be crammed into this tiny town. What saves this series is Helena, the 'ghost-in-law'. Her reason for ending up back in Mudbug is just hilarious. Unfortunately it is revealed in the first chapter, and the rest of the book does not maintain that level of humor.

Why oh why did Jana de Leon allow this narrator?!?
I like Jaba’s Miss Fortune series v much and wanted to give this series a go but after 10mins of the narration by Joanna Parker, my brain feels like it is splitting in two! It’s such a shame as I think they would be fun books if the narrator was of a better calibre. She is just truly the worst narrator I have come across and I have no idea why when the narrator for the Miss Fortune books was chosen so well. I know these books are just supposed to be a bit of fun but they should still be talented surely?!?
If you can cope with all the shrill voices, and all characters soundly pretty much the same, you may find this a fun way to pass the time. For me however I think this is sloppy narration, sloppy direction and sloppy work all around in the studio. Such a shame!
I do however highly recommend the Miss Fortune series, they wouldn’t be my usual pick but they are great fun.
