Story
In 1914, the First World War ignited a brutal conflict in North America, with the United States finally defeating the Confederate States. In 1917, the Great War ended and an era of simmering hatred began, fueled by the despotism of a few and the sacrifice of many. Now it's 1942. The USA and CSA are locked in a tangle of jagged, blood-soaked battle lines, modern weaponry, desperate strategies, and the kind of violence that only the damned could conjure up for their enemies and themselves.

Story
As the Socialist Party battles Coolidge to retain the presidency in 1924, it seems as if it can do no wrong. The stock market soars, and the USA prospers. Although victors in the War of Secession, the CSA still reels from its loss of the Great War while the Freedom Party promises new vigor and pride. But should these gray-shirted fascists seize power, they may prove dangerous. Sharing world supremacy with Germany and bloated with prosperity, the USA fails to notice ominous events inside the weakened CSA.

January 1864: General Robert E. Lee faces defeat. The Army of Northern Virginia is ragged and ill-equipped. Gettysburg has broken the back of the Confederacy and decimated its manpower. Then, Andries Rhoodie, a strange man with an unplaceable accent, approaches Lee with an extraordinary offer. Rhoodie demonstrates an amazing rifle: its rate of fire is incredible, its lethal efficiency breathtaking - and Rhoodie guarantees unlimited quantities to the Confederates. From "the master of alternate history" comes a new trilogy that reimagines a mid-20th century in which General MacArthur, without bothering to consult President Truman, detonates nuclear warheads in several Manchurian cities after China enters the Korean War. In his acclaimed novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove has scrutinized the twisted soul of the 20th century, from the forces that set World War I in motion to the rise of fascism in the decades that followed.

In April 1945, the Allies are charging toward Berlin from the west, the Russians from the east. For Hitler, the situation is hopeless. But at this turning point in history, another war is about to explode. To win World War II, the Allies dealt with the devil. Joseph Stalin helped FDR, Churchill, and Truman crush Hitler. But what if "Uncle Joe" had given in to his desire to possess Germany and all of Europe? In this stunning novel, Robert Conroy picks up the history of the war just as American troops cross the Elbe into Germany. Then Stalin slams them with the brute force of his enormous Soviet army.

The year is 1901. Germany's navy is the second largest in the world; their army, the most powerful. But with the exception of a small piece of Africa and a few minor islands in the Pacific, Germany is without an empire. Kaiser Wilhelm II demands that the United States surrender its newly acquired territories: Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. President McKinley indignantly refuses, so with the honor and economic future of the Reich at stake, the Kaiser launches an invasion of the United States, striking first on Long Island.

Story
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Publisher's Summary
In 1914, they called it The Great War, and few could imagine anything worse. For nearly three decades, a peace forged in blood and fatigue has held sway in North America. Now, Japan dominates the Pacific, the Russian Tsar rules Alaska, and England, under Winston Churchill, chafes for a return to its former glory. But behind the façade of world order, America is a bomb waiting to go off. Jake Featherston, the megalomaniacal leader of the Confederate States of America, is just the man to light the fuse.
In the White House in Philadelphia, Socialist President Al Smith is a living symbol of hope for a nation that has been through the fires of war and the flood tides of depression. In the South, Featherston and his ruling Freedom Party have put down a Negro rebellion with a bloody fist and have interned them in concentration camps. Now, they are determined to crush their Northern neighbor at any cost.

Great book bad narrator
Would you listen to Return Engagement again? Why?
I would, inspite of me feeling the narration wasn't very good.
What did you like best about this story?
Seeing old and new characters from Southern Victory back again.
What three words best describe Paul Costanzo’s voice?
Not that great.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The scenes of blacks being killed almost made me cry.
Any additional comments?
They should've stuck with George Guidall as narrator.

Wonderful novel, horrible narration.
Let me state that I own the entire series this book is part of in hardback, paperback, ebook, and audible. The novels are wonderful ways to read pure "what if" escapism. They aren't pretty, the topic of war and the horrors that mankind can inflict through hatred and unbridled racism are never nice, but the books are quite good.
That said, the narrator is terrible. He frequently mangles common words, speaks in run on sentences that leave you wondering exactly what is going on, and his attempts at the various accents are simply atrocious. When a character's name is Scipio, and was shortened by nick name to "Kip" you would believe that you would then pronounce is as "Skip-io". Instead he pronounces it as "Sipio".
It's a classical name, it truthfully should not be difficult to master. Nor should common words such as "altitude" or "travel". Simply put, the book is good. The narrator is horrid.

Its Turtledove!
I have been waiting for this forever. I do a lot of driving so I don't always have time for read and like to have nice long unabridged books to flesh out my trips.
I am going to give pointers based on either being a noobie to this series or a verteran and wondering how this stands up.
For those who have not read this book know this:
This is probably not where you should start.
This is technically the 8th book in this series
Proceeded by How Few Remain, American Front, Walk in Hell, Breakthroughs,Blood and Iron, The Center Cannot Hold and The Victorious Opposition.
There is a lot of material and the characters in this book come from these previous books.
Earlier books are a bit better written. Lots of Grade A Filler here. Not to bad but lots of repeated facts
CONTENT WARNING!!!!!
In this book the CSA is an analog of Nazi Germany along with its own Southern Fried Hitler who wants to eliminate African Americans. African Americans=Jews
You will hear them say the N word. A LOT. You will listen to really brutal things done to people of color. It is not just for fun but if you needed a CW this is it!
Otherwise welcome to Timeline-191 land
For Vets:
Narrator is really not that bad.
Maybe isn't always on with is accents and everything but its better than the lady voice in Man with the Iron Heart.

Fantastic Continuation of the Series — Terrible Narrator
As the title suggests, it’s a great story. If you’ve been going through the “Southern Victory” series, you know what to expect from Turtledove. Nothing too new, just a continuation of a wonderfully crafted tale.
However, they received a new narrator for this audiobook. He’s awful compared to the man who did the last 5 or so books in this series. Terrible accents, no enthusiasm, ugh. Just awful.

Great book, bad narrating
I love H.T's Universe 191 series but Paul Costanzo sounds like a bored newscaster reading a story he finds profoundly distasteful. His southern characters sound like forced charicatures and his female voices sound almost indistinguishable from the males. This would be a solid five stars if George Guidall was reading it.

Great Book HORRIBLE NARRATION
I've read all the books in this series in print. I got involved in the audiobooks for my long drives and my typical commute to and from work. I love the books and think they're well written. George Guidell was a VERY good narrator and I enjoyed listening to his readings. Paul Costanzo is the exact opposite. It seems like he has no idea how to read with any sort of inflection. I've been waiting for five years for this release. I was surprised to find it when I searched for it. I've not even finished the reading yet but it's painful to listen to. I love this series dearly and if the publishers are reading these reviews at all: PLEASE FIND SOMEONE BETTER TO READ THESE. If you can't get George Guidell back, get someone who knows how to narrate and not make every last word sound awkward and unfamiliar. This painful narration rips you from the book entirely.

A Compelling Listen
I started working my way through the superb "Southern Victory" series starting with How Few Remain (sadly not available on Audible) earlier this year and have found the series very compelling. Return Engagement gets the story of the new world war to which the American Empire books have been building up off to a gripping start. While some of the characters are much more interesting than others, the story is very well crafted and is studded with interesting little details and ironies for the historian to pick up on. It is also relatively free of the cringeworthy love scenes which detract from some of Turtledove's other books. The narrator is very good and switches seamlessly between the different voices and accents. This is a good listen - but I don't think I'd have got anything like as much out of it without listening to the whole series which precedes it.
