Publisher's Summary

His truth. His story. In his words.

There have been many comments made and books written about Siya Kolisi, captain of the Springboks, and the first Black man to lead his country in more than 128 years of South African rugby.

But now, for the very first time, Siya Kolisi shares his story in an extraordinarily intimate memoir, charting his journey from being born into the impoverished Zwide township, to leading his proud nation to an astonishing victory at the Rugby World Cup in 2019.

However, Rise is not simply a chronology of matches played and games won; it is an exploration of a man’s race and his faith, a masterclass in attaining a positive mindset and an inspirational reminder that it is possible to defy the odds, no matter how they are stacked against you.

In 2020, partly in response to the pandemic, Siya and his wife, Rachel, launched The Kolisi Foundation, providing personal protective equipment to healthcare workers and delivering food parcels throughout South Africa.

The title Rise is inspired by Siya’s mother - Phakama - which translates to the book’s name, as well as a celebration of his Xhosa heritage.

Critic Reviews

"Siya's rise from humble beginnings to lifting that World Cup trophy is the stuff of fairytales." (Marcus Rashford)

"Siya's story is well documented, and I am so impressed by the way he conducts himself. As the captain of his team and as a statesman he is measured and thoughtful. He is a leader in every way. An inspiration to a dynamic South African nation." (Eddie Jones)

"Few people embody the tenacity of what the New South Africa stands for, like Siya does. His story mirrors the nations’; in its trials and tribulations and also in it’s triumph against all odds. This is a real life heroes journey." (Trevor Noah)

Great book, amazing man!

Very impactful story. I grew up 30 minutes from PE in Uitenhage, and played both rugby and water polo for Muir against Grey. So his story was very relatable for me. The narration is in the traditional Xhosa-accented English, so may take a bit if getting used to for some. I felt it helped set the tone for the book as coming from a traditional South African perspective. Siya’s story is powerful, and I love how he is unashamed of his faith in Jesus. Also his focus on change in SA is fantastic. The country needs leaders like Siya. Highly recommended.

Inspirational

Truly unique story told by a captivating narrator. Vastly different from many of the other rugby books filled with "banter". Authentic, honest and remarkable.

Great read

I am not a rugby fan...But even I enjoyed it. I was both surprised and encouraged by how much Siya let us in. He was open about his struggles and how his wife Rachel stayed at his side, even when she had enough reason to call it quits. That is truly a woman of strength.

I have gained more respect for him as a Christian, husband, father, leader and celebrity.

A must read in my opinion!

A Biased Review

Definitely a biased review. (I'm South African and a Springbok fan).

The best sporting autobiography I've come across. Siya's story is an inspiration and a leadership master class. The book outlines his life story and journey through the 2019 World Cup and 2021 Lion's Tour. His views on rugby, leadership and life is well worth the read especially for any rugby fan

Excelent

Great read, I enjoyed this book very much. It gives one a total different perspective on Siya the person, rather than only Siya the rugby player.

A sad, powerful and inspiring story of a true super hero, a little hard to hear and understand if you are not from Africa. I have been waiting for this book for months and it didn’t disappoint. Fantastic

Inspirational Read

Simply put, the book, it’s rawness and it’s account of Siya’s life is nothing short of inspirational. I agree with his quote: it’s not the destination that matters, but rather the journey.

Good but not great

Enjoyed the book but was a little underwhelmed. Good story overall parts were a little dull. I didn't think the play by play parts added much.

Grounding, Humbling and Inspiring

I really enjoyed RISE. As an expat, I found Siya's life storey not only Grounding but very Humbling, and I'm inspired to do what I can to fight Gender-based violence. I loved seeing his rise through his eyes.
