Isabelle should be blissfully happy - she's about to win the handsome prince. Except Isabelle isn't the beautiful girl who lost the glass slipper and captured the prince's heart. She's the ugly stepsister who cut off her toes to fit into Cinderella's shoe...which is now filling with blood. Isabelle cut away pieces of herself in order to become pretty. Sweet. More like Cinderella. But that only made her mean, jealous, and hollow. Now she has a chance to alter her destiny and prove what ugly stepsisters have always known: it takes more than heartache to break a girl.

Publisher's Summary
Details of the sea witch’s banishment have been exaggerated. The body count that preempted it was not. Once an illustrious princess, her hands and tentacles were stained with the blood of thousands. No one could comprehend how the hooks of madness dragged her down from her life of privilege.
Born Princess Vanessa of Atlantica, the ambitious young royal was one of two children born to the great King Poseidon. She and her brother, Triton, were groomed from birth to rule. Yet only one would ascend that coveted throne. While carefree Triton flits through his training with a cavalier demeanor and beguiling charm, Vanessa’s hunger for her father’s acceptance drives her to push herself to the limits of magic and to combat to become a leader worthy of her people.
When war against the humans ravages their once regal kingdom, political sides are chosen. Factions from the seven seas challenge the existing leadership, pitting Vanessa against her brother in a vicious battle for the crown. Traitors are exposed, dark family secrets revealed, and a once strong sibling bond is strained to its breaking point.
Only when the ink black waters from the ultimate betrayal rescind will the truth be known of how the villainous sea witch rose with one name on her vengeful lips - Triton.

Fantastic narration and sound effects.
The Story
We all know the story of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. I had preconceived notions about Vanessa going in. But as her story unfolded, I couldn't help but trumpet her cause. In a way only Rourke can she weaves and turns the tide so that the villain is the one you find yourself championing behind. I will never look at The Little Mermaid the same way.
The Narration
I was blown away by Tiffany Marz's performance. I say performance because she didn't simply read the story and add creative accents. Marz made this an Oscar-worthy performance! She brought the entire cast and story to life and enhanced it with her beautiful narration and sound effects. Bravo Tiffany Marz.

WOW! Gripping and Heartwrenching!
Ursula was not always a villain. Rourke has written the perfect backstory for this infamous Disney villain. This story was gripping and hard to put down! The narration was wonderful and I loved the sound effects. Some of the sound effects were hard to hear so I had to go back and re-listen to them but they made the performance that much more exciting. If you like fairytale's and you're looking for something fun to listen to this is it! Don't walk, run!

Inappropriate tone of voice made this a slog
Ironic for a spin off of (Disney’s) Little Mermaid that clearly takes up voice as a central theme, the narrator seemed a little tone-deaf— trying to maintain a haughty-courtier cadence and intonation throughout the entire book, despite that being completely inappropriate for at least 80% of the story
The narration really needed to shift with the frame of the story to keep the listener immersed, but instead the narrator maintained the “bring me some tea, and set the tray on the back of this kneeling courtier” affectation even while giving what should have been a moving account of trauma through the eyes of the child who experienced it.
The mismatch between story and affectation rips the listener right out of the story at several points, which is annoying and caused me to stop listening several times.
The story itself and writing are decent. Not sure why the author kept on saying “conspirational” instead of “conspiratorial,” but that seems like something an editor should have caught (unless that was a mispronunciation?)
There were a few things in the story that could have been better or should have been done differently, but overall, this wouldn’t be a bad book to read on your next flight. It’s a light read, a spin-off of a story you already know well (to which there are no shortage of heavy-handed references), and it (just barely) passes the Bechdel test

My biggest struggle with this was the narrator's sing -songy voice. It went up and down way too much for me to enjoy it at most points. I liked the story overall, some parts were cheesy.

The voices of the narrator is truly something magi
WOW! I listened to the audio book version of this and just wow. I don't listen to too many audio books because I just don't have the time, hence why this took me almost a month to listen to. But goodness me, this one is totally worth it! The voices of the narrator is truly something magical. Now on to the story.
Stacey never disappoints, this story. When you love the villain you KNOW the author did something right. What a heart wrenching tale.

Ursula's Journey
Rise of the Sea Witch had me captivated from the start. It was very interesting to follow Ursula's journey. I like that the author kept some of the Disney version but also added her own original story into it. The world building and character development were on point. I quickly became invested in the characters and listened whenever I could to find out what happened next. The narrator did a fabulous job bringing the story and characters to life. I am definitely interested in continuing this series and look forward to more from this author and narrator.

AMAZING Audio Book
The author nailed it when she chose this talented narrator for Rise Of The Sea Witch. The various voices and sound effects she did created such an amazing experience while listening. I cannot tell you how many times I just sat in my car in the driveway because I was not ready to stop listening. The story is truly intense and the narrator only adds to the storyline. The characters were all brought to life from Flotsom and Jetsom to Starling. I loved this audio book and I hope she gets the same narrator to read Entombed In Glass!! This is a MUST listen even if you have already read. It truly brings the story alive in a whole new way

New LOVE for URSULA!! Great Villain Backstory!
**Disclaimer - I am the Narrator/Producer for this Audiobook but bought my own official Audible Copy and wanted to give some honest input :) Thought you should have that knowledge when considering my review :)
I am a Disney Fanatic, and have always longed to be a Disney Princess (as most do growing up). I even dreamed of someday voicing a Disney Princess. That said, I am a big fan of Villain Backstories, and Stacey Rourke's take on how Vanessa Princess of Atlantica came to be the Villain we all know and Love, has officially turned me to the DARK SIDE! Now that I am older and have more life experience, I can relate to how many Villains end up the way they are depending on the version told. This Version of Ursula's upbringing was the final straw to switching me over to the dark side & making me a Villain Lover! Mwuah hahaha ;) (I am also now NOT such a fan of Triton).
As a Disney Lover, I really feel Stacey did Ursula's story justice and left enough pieces and details to keep the Disney version in tact. She did it justice and then some. I also loved all of the little nods and winks to Disney so to speak, including all of the little pieces of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" sprinkled throughout. I loved finding out how Vanessa transformed into Ursua. I found it to be a sad and painful account for Vanessa, and can understand her anger, pain, resentment and want for revenge based on the events that unfolded. The idea and account of Triton being her younger brother made the entire story that much more touching and realistic for me as an older sister myself. I can relate so much to her love and desire to protect and care for her little brother and how that impacted some of her thoughts and actions.
I loved all of the characters, and want so badly to see each of them with their own story! I loved the link between Greek Mythology, though not in love with how King Poseidon treated his daughter. I enjoyed the bond and progression of feelings between Vanessa and . I was rooting for them the whole book and looked forward to there hopefully being a Romance and Happily Ever After for them. There were some great introductions of characters into Ursula's life, but also explanations of characters we know and how they came to play the role they did/do in her life such as her sidekicks Floteson and Jetteson. There was a little bit of everything for me comedy, tragedy, sadness, magic, love, hate, anger, betrayal, shock & awe, and even included creepy, spooky, dark moments and characters such as her not so alive Mother.
I admit I do not sit down and read as often as I should which is why I am so excited about Audiobooks (as both a listener and creator). I love that I can listen anywhere including long car rides! I also love the Whisper Sync option to switch from Audio to Text. However, I loved this Book by Stacey Rourke SO MUCH (truly unbiased and honest) I read it not just for the purposes of Narrating but I never wanted to be done and read it a few times. Loving the story so much made it that much easier for me as a Voice Actor/Narrator/Producer to fall in love with Ursula and the other characters and helped my performance and interpretations. Though it was a lot of work, it was so much fun creating this Audiobook and I honestly didn't want it to be over!. I loved working on it so much that once complete I wasn't sure I did it justice. I kept picturing Ursula's transformation in my mind and couldn't stop hearing it with Sound FX. I've never added FX to a full Novel before but once I added some, I couldn't stop. (I could have kept adding adding on forever really but then it would have never gone on sale) As I said I honestly loved this story so much I wanted to bring it to life as much as possible and create an experience for listeners that made them feel truly a part of Ursula's journey.
As far as Narration and Performance I feel it would be strange to write a Review of my own Narration lol but what I can say is that I am proud of this Audiobook, and honored to have had the opportunity to both Narrate and Produce it. If you are someone that is not great with sitting down to read or always on the go then I highly recommend listening to the Audiobook because it is a story worth Reading/Hearing and my opinion is that it was given enough life to keep listeners interested (and I am very critical of myself normally) I also think if you are a Disney, Ursula, Villain, and/or fan of "The Little Mermaid" then listening and/or reading this Story is a no brainer! I only hope I did it justice and that everyone enjoys it as much as I did creating it and reading the book! I was sad it ended, but excited that there are more books in the series! I am excited to find out what direction Stacey Rourke takes this series next!!
This detail could be considered both a Positive or Negative depending on the listener, but anyone considering the Audiobook should know this is read and acted out Dramatically with different voices, sounds acted out, add libs, emotes, sound FX and emotion. If you are not of fan of that type of Reading and prefer more of a straight read, this may not be the Audiobook for you but would love for you to try it anyway :) To me it felt as though I was creating more of an Audioplay rather than a reading of a book.
To others who have purchased, whether you love it, hate it or anything in between, I appreciate your time and input!! At some point I always read the reviews both positive and negative and appreciate the time and input of every listener and reviewer!! If and when I ever get the time to do so, I plan on taking feedback and constructive criticism to make changes and improvements to the Audiobook if I am able.
Thanks for listening!
...and for checking out my thoughts!!
