Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. Story
Centuries ago, the murder of a beloved king tore apart the Kingdom of Caledun. The land was plunged into chaos and thousands perished. A new order was established in an attempt to return Caledun to its former glory. It failed, but in its place rose the beginnings of the Code. During this same period, the mystical caretakers of the Great Wood retreated from the world of Kal Maran, their disappearance an ominous harbinger of the suffering that was to follow. The Great Wood now grows out of control. Cities, towns, and villages have fallen before the relentless march of the forest.

Story
Being one of the four horsemen sucks. The hours are long, the pay is crap, and every god or monster you meet wants to kill you. For Lazarus Kerrigan, professional necromancer, even helping the police search for some missing internal organs is a welcome relief. That is, until his ex-girlfriend shows up in the employ of an ancient Egyptian deity, and a faerie queen makes him an offer he can't refuse.

Publisher's Summary
Mage Alex Verus has gone from a Camden shopkeeper to one of the most powerful mages in Britain. Now his last and most dangerous battle lies before him.
Alex's girlfriend, the life mage Anne, has fallen fully under the control of the deadly djinn she made a bargain with, and it is preparing to create an army of mages subject to its every whim. Alex, the Council, and the Dark mage Richard Drakh agree to call a truce in their war, and plans are made for a joint attack. Alex knows that it's only a matter of time before Drakh and the Council turn on each other...and neither cares about keeping Anne alive. Can Alex figure out a way to stop Anne and to free her from possession before time runs out for the people he loves?

Thoughtful, intense, action-packed, I loved it
Risen was a fittingly thoughtful, emotionally intense and action-packed climax to the Alex Verus series. It exceeded my expectations with the battle scenes and particularly with how several difficult threads were wrapped up. I also appreciated all the nuances of Alex's situation on every level that were brought out and addressed.
Gildart Jackson's narration was outstanding as always, lending the right gravitas and emotional depth with clarity and good pacing.
I hope with the continuing fall in minimum real production cost, the proliferation of talent, and the growth of the streaming model, that one day the Alex Verus series gets made into an animated series on the level of the Netflix hit, Arcane. It would be absolutely glorious.

Riveting
Finished the whole thing in a single day, simply could not stop listening. It's now been 12 hours and I am still riding the high. Man, what a book. The saga of Alex Verus ends in a book-long high note. Plenty of action, plots, twists and scenes of Alex just generally being crafty as hell. Risen is a fitting farewell to an amazing series.
Gildart Jackson's was great as always. Plenty of emotional scenes brought to life by his performance.

Wow! The ending we've all been waiting for.
Difficult to review without spoilers! If like me you thought there were going to be thirteen books not twelve, adjust your mindset....this is a roller coaster of a final book.
Great narration by Gildart Jackson, who always brings the books to life.

Excellent series and a brilliant performance!
I'm not a professional critic and I can't comment on things like pacing or structure of a storyline. What I can say is that this series has been one of the most entertaining and for me original stories I have read or listened to. I thoroughly enjoyed every book and was sad to finish each one. I don't know if this is the end if the series but if so I look forward to the next book from Benedict Jacka!
It should also be said that a large part of my enjoyment came from Gildart Jackson's outstanding performance. I have stopped listening to some audio books in the past because the narrator annoyed me or was plain dreadful. Not here. Loved it!

It was ok
I was really looking forward to this but I have to say it really dragged out in places and got a bit annoying. Even though it was action-packed it felt like everything was in slow motion. Nothing really new or exciting happened. Enough already, I kept thinking! But it ended nicely with the possibilities for future books to go on different tangents left open.

Extraordinary Conclusion to an Extraordinary Story
Benedict manages to bring the story to an exemplary conclusion with this masterpiece of urban fantasy. I can wholeheartedly recommend this as a listen. Gildart Jackon's narration was as always excellent, it's always bliss when a narration makes characters immediately identifiable by their voice. Just splendid.
