Publisher's Summary

River People is a powerful novel with unforgettable characters.

In Nebraska, in the late 1890s, 17-year-old Effie and 11-year-old Bridget must struggle to endure at a time when women and children had few rights, and society looked upon domestic abuse as a private family matter.

The story is told through the eyes of the girls as they learn to survive under grueling circumstances. River People is a novel of inspiration, love, loss, and renewal.

Interesting book but difficult listen for animal lovers

This was a beautifully written novel and certainly depicts the awful reality for women during this time. The author painstakingly described several instances of animals suffering at the hands of despicable men- these scenes were too tough for me. I found myself fast-forwarding through to avoid the clear visual presented. Beautiful prose with so many interesting characters.

bleak story with insufferable characters

The writer is talented and knows how to tell a story well. The imagery was very vivid and everything was well laid out.
That being said, the story itself was bleak and miserable for literally the entire book until about the last sixty seconds. Every single character was completely insufferable except for the one that was killed off so she wasn't even around to help redeem anything. The main characters never grow. They stay the same scared, sniveling, victim playing people for the ENTIRE BOOK. There is no redemption. No growth. No learning. This book could have been about girls growing into women who lean on each other and overcome obstacles or at the very least learn one redemptive quality at all. Or even get sick of it and run away! But no. They just stay and hate everything and hate each other and hate life and do absolutely nothing.
The narrator has a very pleasant voice but the inflections were often strange and her depiction of an 11 year old sounds more like a 4 year old, which was frustrating at times.

Well written, had me riveted! But really depressing.

I listened to this almost in one sitting. A gripping novel. But everything was so sad and depressing. If your looking for an upbeat book, move on.

What a truly great story!

I gave my husband 5 book names and I told him to pick one and this was it! I am so glad! at first it was a bit hard getting into the narrator- she did wonderfully on all the characters but her own voice as just the narrator was so monotone. Anyway I'm so glad I pushed through.... one of those teary-eyed endings in a most happy way! I'm not a major animal lover so I wasnt as disturbed by some of the descriptions of animal cruelty as other readers were in the reviews. Sure it was sad to hear different parts but it's only a story people... relax, it's not like Lassie was being beaten right in front of you as you listened!!!

Great book about women’s hardships

This was a really great, some times hard to hear book about survival, heartache, and times during the the late 1800’s. Enjoy.

Addictive listen

I have listened to and loved many stories. This is one that leaves you mourning the end. I loved and hated characters. I cried, raged and prayed. I am not ready for another just yet. What a traumatic listen.
