Publisher's Summary

A stunning supernatural thriller set in Siberia, where a film crew is covering an elusive ghost story about the Kolyma Highway, a road built on top of the bones of prisoners of Stalin's gulag.

Surrounded by barren trees in a snow-covered wilderness with a dim, dusky sky forever overhead, Siberia’s Kolyma Highway is 1200 miles of gravel packed permafrost within driving distance of the Arctic Circle. A narrow path where drivers face such challenging conditions as icy surfaces, limited visibility, and an average temperature of 60 degrees below zero, fatal car accidents are common.

But motorists are not the only victims of the highway. Known as the Road of Bones, it is a massive graveyard for the former Soviet Union’s gulag prisoners. Hundreds of thousands of people worked to death and left where their bodies fell, consumed by the frozen elements and plowed beneath the permafrost road.

Fascinated by the history, documentary producer Felix “Teig” Teigland is in Russia to drive the highway, envisioning a new series capturing Life and Death on the Road of Bones with a ride to the town of Akhust, “the coldest place on Earth,” collecting ghost stories and local legends along the way. Only, when Teig and his team reach their destination, they find an abandoned town, save one catatonic nine-year-old girl - and a pack of predatory wolves, faster and smarter than any wild animals should be.

Pursued by the otherworldly beasts, Teig’s companions confront even more uncanny and inexplicable phenomena along the Road of Bones, as if the ghosts of Stalin’s victims were haunting them. It is a harrowing journey that will push Teig beyond endurance and force him to confront the sins of his past.

Teaser written better than the book

The teaser told of a Siberian winter along a stretch of highway dubbed the "road of bones." built on the bodies of the gulag prisoners who constructed it. A supernatural menace chases the characters. It sounded spine-tingling, but it wasn't.
I'm not sure why the book was titled "Road of Bones." The story had little to do with the road other than they traveled and fled upon it. There was no mention of bones after the initial explanation. I think the author thought it was a cool title and used it.

The first third of the book drew me in. In the second third, I wondered, "Is this it?" In the last third, I just wanted to get through it and move on. Not enough attention was given to the supernatural entities if they were supernatural at all. The narrative was highly visual, describing how things and events appeared. This kept me at a distance from the story. I was never pulled in. The story is one-dimensional. The story progressed linearly but there was no depth with backstory or insights into character. Some of the supernatural antagonists were outright silly. The intensity was described but I never felt it. I was never on the edge of my seat. Overall, the premise, as described in the teaser is good, but poorly fleshed out.

I wasted a credit on this over-hyped book!

The narrator is excellent too bad the story isn't - I kept reading hoping it would live up to the hype and it did not. Should have gone on the wait lis at the library and saved a credit

Absolutely terrifying!

I purchased the Audible version of this book to listen to at bedtime. The narration was very good, but its not conducive to a good night's sleep. If you want to hear the ultimate ghost story, here it is. thanks for the recommendation Stephen King.

Hell of a ride!

The Road of Bones grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go—but, out there on the Kolyma Highway, that's just known as "an attention getter."

Disappointing

I thought this book was over-hyped. I was expecting an edge of your seat thriller but found myself pushing through til the end just to finish. I was expecting more with Stephen King's endorsement. Maybe I am just not that shocked and scared by things anymore.

I have so many questions....

Great book, for the first 75%. More plot holes than Swiss cheese. Bummer ending.
