Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

I Miss Robert Ludlum!
Jason Bourne in this novel is not the character created in "The Bourne Identity." While that is not necessarily bad, I found this book frustrating to follow and the characters absurd. The narration was worse than I thought possible, with every character virtually indistinguishable from every other. The narrator chose a deliberately choppy style, inserting pauses between 2- or 3-word bursts, which quickly becomes irritating on a novel of this length. It may be that my irritation with the narration has colored my impression of the characters and plot in this book, but this is one with which I wish I had not wasted my time.

What happened to this character and who wrote this book????
Jason Bourne is nowhere in this book. I can't even follow the way this story. I can't even finish it. The dialogue is terrible. I am so disappointed in this book. It doesn't have the right to be called a "sequel" to the Bourne series.

A Robert Ludlum book should not need an X rating
What disappointed you about Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Enigma?
I have read and listened to many, many Ludlum books over the years. What idiot decided the stories would benefit from gratuitous scenes of masturbation, rape, incest, including between thirteen year old twins, and sexual torture? Ludlum's stories have always been able to stand on their own without a need for shock value or pornography that add nothing at all to the story.
What do you think your next listen will be?
It will be one of the Covert One books I have already downloaded.
Have you listened to any of Holter Graham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any of his other performances.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
If you leave out all the inappropriate scenes, the story is a good one, but there are so many other Robert Ludlum books and authors that I would skip this one in favor of any of the others. I will avoid this author in the future.
Any additional comments?
No.

well perfect plan for not selling another book
Written as if the author wanted to be a soft porn writer. Narrated in such a staccato way that it detracted immensely from the book. Bad enough that the producer should have killed it by end of first chapter. Could possibly be worst all around story, narration and production performance I have read.

Could not listen to narrator long enough to finish
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I do not know if the story line got any better after the first chapter but the narrator is terrible. He is all wrong for the book.
Has Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Enigma turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not so much.
How could the performance have been better?
Different performer/reader.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Absolute disappointment.
Any additional comments?
I will get my money back and delete the book.

Has Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Enigma turned you off from other books in this genre?
Yes if they continue with this narrator.

Eric Van Lustbader is not Robert Ludlum
Would you try another book from Eric Van Lustbader and/or Holter Graham?
No
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Most interesting - the continuation of the Bourne story
Least interesting - pathetic character descriptions
How could the performance have been better?
Get a new narrator
Any additional comments?
I read Robert Ludlum, he was a favorite author or mine and Eric Van Lustbader is not Robert Ludlum. Lustbader does not transition well between character description and action. It is like he is almost writing according to a formula - a bad one. I am three quarters of the way through the book but it is tough slogging. With each chapter I hope that it will get better but I am continually disappointed, but determined to finish the book at least to get my money's worth.
Holter Graham is terrible as a reader and narrator. His short choppy almost out of breath reading style takes away from the enjoyment of this story. His pathetic efforts to do various Russian and Arabic accents are almost comical. They are very hard on your ears. This is the first Holter Graham narration I have listened to and I must say that now his name on audiobooks is a red flag for me - avoid the book no matter how good you might think the story will be.
It is disappointing to have to write a bad review like this but if we don't authors and narrators will not improve.
