Gay werewolves in Victorian London? Why yes, yes there are.
Biffy, newly minted Alpha of the London Pack, is not having a good Christmas. His Beta abandoned him, his werewolves object to his curtain choices, and someone keeps leaving babies on his doorstep.
Professor Randolph Lyall returns home to London after 20 years abroad, afraid of what he might find. With his pack in chaos and his Alpha in crisis, it will take all his Beta efficiency to set everything to rights. Perhaps, in the process, he may even determine how to mend his own heart.

Publisher's Summary
Narrated by the wonderful Emma Newman, this is Gail Carriger's first steampunk lesbian romance featuring a maid bent on seducing a brilliant cross-dressing scientist who's too brokenhearted to notice. Or is she?
Imogene Hale is a lowly parlor maid with a soul-crushing secret. Seeking solace, she takes work at a local hive, only to fall desperately in love with the amazing lady inventor the vampires are keeping in the potting shed. Genevieve Lefoux is heartsick, lonely, and French. With culture, class, and the lady herself set against the match, can Imogene and her duster overcome all odds and win Genevieve's heart, or will the vampires suck both of them dry?
This is a stand-alone LBGTQ sweet romance set in Gail Carriger's Parasolverse, full of class prejudice, elusive equations, and paranormal creatures taking tea.
Delicate sensibilities? This story contains women pleasing women and ladies who know what they want and pursue it, sometimes in exquisite detail.
Supernatural Society novellas can be consumed in any order. Look for surprise appearances from popular characters and the occasional strategic application of cognac.

Entirely delightful f/f romance!
I love the way this author does romance. Intriguing characters, quirky and vivid turns of phrase (I particularly enjoyed "gertuding"), humor, and just enough detail in danger or dishabille to titillate and make the heart pound.
I am most pleased that my favorite hat making inventor finally has someone to love her properly. If you're already a fan of the other books in this universe then you will probably enjoy this bit of dandelion fluff quite as much as the rest. You'll definitely feel more warmly disposed toward a certain wicker chicken.
Warning: do not read if a couple ladies getting naked and lovingly frisky with each other makes you uncomfortable. Gail Carriger has many other books of a more heteronormative and less descriptive bent, if that's your fancy.

Loose Ends
These books are steam punk adventure meets modern Jane Austen with vampires and werewolves. You’d think that was too genre-bending but it works for me. They also traverse the continuum between young adult, squeaky clean to mildly erotic. The author clearly states right up front that this particular novella is at the grownup end of that spectrum.
Of course it is! Like all good Jane Austen descendants, Ms. Carriger cannot let a character go unloved and Genevieve LaFou has a story line that stretches through all the books in this universe. She’s delightful and she deserves to find love. Not much happens in this book except that love story, but I am very glad I heard it. I wanted Genevieve to be happy.
One tiny annoyance (which apparently does not bother Ms. Carriger or Audible) is that every time they hire a new narrator, the character’s names and accents change. Since I don’t READ the books, just listen to them, it is distracting. Lord Akeldema is either “A-KEEL-da-ma” or “A-kill-DA-ma”, Biffy somehow acquires an Italian accent and stops being an adorable, classic dandy. In this book Genevieve’s son is no longer “Kee-NEL” but “JEE-nel”. And nobody has a Scottish accent. The first few chapters are always confusing until I get used to meeting my favorite characters in their new guises.

A voice like silk.
I've been an avid fan of all things Parasol since I was given the first Parasol Protectorate novel years ago. I'm overjoyed to see LGBT themes in her novels, and now, with this story a fantastic f/f story.
When listening to an audio book, the narrator is so important. I've heard books that were good, but the narrator was not and it ruined the experience.
This narrator was prefect! Her voice was soothing and silken. I could listen to her read almost anything.

I love listening to French accents!
Even if it's fake, she sounds so silky! Most books would have a side character have such an amusing accent, but a main character in a romance novella with the accent of the language of love? I can listen to this for hours! Emma Newman can really pull it off and the storyline is just great! Definitely worth it for me.

Greater the second time around!
I knew I loved the story already, this being my second time going through it. But the reader's performance made the story coming alive in entirely different way! Both my interpretation reading it and her vocal presence reciting it created two wonderfully unique experiences, each great in its own way. The romance was sweet, Imogene really shined through Emma this time around just as strongly, and Genevieve's charms showed through just as well. Another job well done!

delightful
I really enjoyed this book. The story is delightful, the performance one of the best I've listened to, and my only two complaints is that the story had to come to an end and that I stayed up way too late because I couldn't make myself pause it. No regrets. Having more read and heard all the books in this universe, I am sincere in my hope that there will be more stories to follow with the delightful cast of characters.

At the very least say the names correctly
It is immensely hard to listen to these books that are supposed to be in the same universe and yet the narrator says the names completely different than the rest of the previous narrators. It's grating. I can't countenance how these narrators were allowed to record and be published while butchering names. Do they not listen to the previous books at all? This seems extremely lazy and detracts from the story.

Brilliant book!
I enjoyed this book so much. It was great to have Genevieve Lefoux's storyline expanded, to see her find love and for other main characters to make an appearance. Good to have some quality lesbian romance too - with very tastefully written intimate scenes which are not gratuitous or excessive. I have listened to all the Parasol Protectorate and Custard Protocol series plus 3 out of 4 of the Finishing School series, and this is definitely up there with the best. My only gripe with audible is that the readers for the various series pronounce characters' names differently - this should be checked before a new recording is made and the author consulted on correct pronunciation.

Great story
Another excellent story by Ms Carriger. Let down unfortunately by the narration. I’m not a fan of Emma Newman’s narration of M’s Carriger’s work and find the pronunciation grates (particularly with Genevieve). Although irritating, I can usually ignore that. But I can’t ignore Lord Maccon becoming English and inexplicably losing his Scottish accent and identity.

Brilliant! Gail Carriger does it again!
Firstly I would like to say that I have read/listened to all the book series in the Parasol Protectorate, and I can happily say that this is another brilliant piece of work.
I was lucky enough to actually get a free download of this book by signing up to Gail Carriger’s newsletter and entering into her monthly competition.
I never normally win these sort of things and o was so surprised and grateful when I found out that I had.
This book gives us another insight into the side characters, of course our main characters feature here and there, but they are now the side characters.
It answers some questions that I had, what happened to certain characters and so on.
I personally have no problem with same sex couples, but this was done with taste, and Ms Carriger knows how to write ‘naughty’ scenes without making you cringe at the descriptions, but enough so you can understand what is happening. A perfect balance.
I cannot wait to see what Ms Carriger brings out next, but I do hope it has something to do with the parallel universe she has so expertly and beautiful created. There are so many wonderful plot holes to dig out and expand.
Thank you for such an enjoyable book, Emma Newman is a fantastic narrator, and she has done a few of the other books too, so it is always lovely to hear familiar voices.
I hope you enjoy this incredible ladies books (read the Parasol Protectorate, Finishing School, Custard Protocol and the Deadly Novella series to get more out of this book), they are works of art, for the world she has created.
I would definitely recommend this to many friends and family.
Thank you, please keep safe in this current situation xx

such a nice ending.
I love Gail's books. They are so nice to listen too and I really enjoy them again and again. plus I love the way everyone gets an ending. it's very tidy and neat.
Beautiful stories with deep and well imagined characters who come to life in the telling.
Well worth your time.

Nicely balanced
If only other authors could follow Ms Carriger's example of balancing the Romance elements so nicely against the Story elements, to ensure that the romance isn't nausiatingly overwhelming. This one is a positive Baby Bear of a tale, in that it strikes the balance Just Right and, as a result, is a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

An excellent short story
Another great read/listen for Gail's world. Really nice to have a romance other than the stereotypical heterosexual stories.

An excellent story, beautifully told
I listened to the audiobook of this story, and Emma Newman did an excellent job of bringing it to life. I especially loved her variations in accents between the "town" and "country" folk, and LeFoux is adorable. Whilst it's not suitable for everyone due to same sex relationships and some violence, I'd definitely recommend this story to those who can accept those things in a story, especially fans of the Parasolverse - it's great to see so many characters pop up, including the Wicker Chicken!
