INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“It’s a hell of a story.” —The New York Times
“A stunning and revelatory memoir.” Oprah Daily

From MSNBC anchor and New York Times bestselling author Katy Tur, a shocking and deeply personal memoir about a life spent chasing the news.

“By the time I was two years old, I knew to yell ‘Story! Story!’ at the squawks of my parents’ police scanner. By four, I could hold a microphone and babble my way through a kiddie news report. By the time I was in high school, though, my parents had lost it all. Their marriage. Their careers. Their reputations.”

When a box from her mother showed up on Katy Tur’s doorstep, months into the pandemic and just as she learned she was pregnant with her second child, she didn’t know what to expect. The box contained thousands of hours of video—the work of her pioneering helicopter journalist parents. They grew rich and famous for their aerial coverage of Madonna and Sean Penn’s secret wedding, the Reginald Denny beating in the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and O.J. Simpson’s notorious run in the white Bronco. To Tur, these family videos were an inheritance of sorts, and a reminder of who she was before her own breakout success as a reporter.

In Rough Draft, Tur writes about her eccentric and volatile California childhood, punctuated by forest fires, earthquakes, and police chases—all seen from a thousand feet in the air. She recounts her complicated relationship with a father who was magnetic, ambitious, and, at times, frightening. And she charts her own survival from local reporter to globe-trotting foreign correspondent, running from her past. Tur also opens up for the first time about her struggles with burnout and impostor syndrome, her stumbles in the anchor chair, and her relationship with CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil (who quite possibly had a crazier childhood than she did).

Intimate and captivating, Rough Draft explores the gift and curse of family legacy, examines the roles and responsibilities of the news, and asks the question: To what extent do we each get to write our own story?

Love this book

I bought the Audible of your book yesterday. Have listened to 2 hours already today (would get it finished today except I’m watching the January 6th Hearings!). Fascinating story and I really appreciate that you recorded it yourself!!!

I loved Katie’s first book “Unbelievable”, this is even better!

This was so honest about her life growing up. I was just a little older than you are and was growing up in LA at same time. My parents watched her parents work. The Tur’s really did create a niche market that people have copied to this day.
With your first book, I enjoyed your candor and the fearless way you took on an opposition that put you and your camera team in jeopardy everyday. I actually worried about your safety when on the campaign trail, then candidate trump, put a bullseye on your back for just doing your job.
It was that same bravery, I heard in your voice when you stood up to your Dad letting him know that it was it, damn it. Your line had been crossed, and you were weren’t going to take it ANYMORE! Bravo.
I understand how abuse can be repeated from earlier generations, but like you I never laid a hand on my kiddo. Deciding to break a bad cycle.

This book is so much more personal and I am sure there are many that will see and feel better after hearing or reading that they simply are not alone with their family struggles. A lot of us have it, to varying degrees, but most of us are unable to share it so beautifully.
You are my hero. It comes through in your work that you love your children and Tony, I am glad you did your own narration again!
I listened at the gym and in the car. But I am coming to the end of it. Please keep writing you have a gift that connects with the reader, you are a natural, not many people can do that.
Congrats to Katy Bear on her book! Seriously you could write political biographies or history figures. 😉👍🏼 thanks to Nicolle Wallace for having you on to discuss your new book. 🥰 love the ladies of MSNBC.

A must read/ No: a MUST LISTEN

Katy Tur; Katy Tur; Katy Tur:
Your book on Audible is extra-ordinary on many levels.

I have wondered, like many, who have observed your NBC/MSNBC interviews, what informs her incisive, fearless questioning?
Well, your ability to transform your acutely painful personal story into your unrelenting journalism is ‘extra-ordinary’.

This is one of those books, read by THE author, which provides courageously searing and self-revealing insights. Truly extraordinary.

Your willingness to share your experiences, I suspect, will allow others to heal, from their own cringeworthy experiences.

Your journalism exemplifies a speak ‘Truth to Power’ commitment by questioning your subjects as part of your training early-in-your-life.

You’ve transformed it powerfully.
Thank you. Gotta hear this book!!!

An honest and fascinating glimpse

I did not know anything about Ms. Tur’s family although I had heard her once mention something about parents and news and a helicopter. But I have always found her very interesting as a broadcaster so I bit. Wow what a story. I watched the documentary halfway through which I recommend. It helps inform the latter part of the book. (The only thing I did not love was the very short music cut at the beginning and end. Interesting choice. What is that about?!) It all felt honest and fresh and sincere. Highly recommend especially if you have an interest in broadcast news. Well done Katy!

A terrific listen

In the interests of full disclosure, I am a journalist, though at the local level. I throughly enjoyed this book I found honest and compelling.
Many of the questions Tur raised about the profession are ones with which every responsible journalist struggles. None of us likely make decisions we look back on as 100% correct. Tur doesn’t flinch about her experiences, blemishes and all. I believe she is a credit to the profession.

Such a good story

I was familiar with Katy Tur from MSNBC. I had also read her first book, which I enjoyed so much. This book covers Katy’s personal life along with her job. For me it was a fascinating look into someone I respect but knew very little about on a personal level. Thank you for sharing your story Katy. The world is a better place for having you in it!
