Publisher's Summary

This audiobook features dramatized audio performances by a full cast–featuring some your favorite Riot voices!

Discover an epic tale of magic, revenge, and an empire on the verge of ruin in the first ever novel set in the blockbuster universe of League of Legends.

Camavor is a brutal land with a bloody legacy. Where the empire’s knights go, slaughter follows.

Kalista seeks to change that. When her young and narcissistic uncle, Viego, becomes king, she vows to temper his destructive instincts, as his loyal confidant, advisor, and military general. But her plans are thwarted when an assassin’s poisoned blade strikes Viego’s wife, Isolde, afflicting her with a malady for which there is no cure.

As Isolde’s condition worsens, Viego descends into madness and grief, threatening to drag Camavor down with him. Kalista makes a desperate gambit to save the kingdom: she searches for the long lost Blessed Isles, rumored to hold the queen’s salvation, if only Kalista can find them.

But corruption grows in the Blessed Isles’ capital, where a vengeful warden seeks to ensnare Kalista in his cruel machinations. She will be forced to choose between her loyalty to Viego and doing what she knows is right–for even in the face of utter darkness, one noble act can shine a light that saves the world.

Great voice cast, meh story

If you aren’t a fan of LoL and don’t know the lore, prepare to be whelmed. Like, it’s okay. The full cast nails it. Narrator is only average in comparison. Characters are kind of lame. Ending is not satisfying. I was bullied into listening this by my friends who play league of legends because I bullied them into the Cosmere.

Go read Way of Kings instead.

More Lore for the masses

Riot seems to be knocking it out of the park with expanding and filling out the lore for their game world. I loved the touch of having the champions voiced by their actual voice actors. Love will make you do terrible things, and this book is a great lesson. The more I listened the more excited I got, and here's hoping that perhaps there will be other audiobooks from the LoL world to come. Definitely worth a listen, especially if you've played the game. Being able to shout out omg they are using their in-game abilities with friends was a definitely highlight of this audiobook. Bravo Riot, Bravo!

Fun Listen

I enjoyed the different voice actors reprising their roles from the League of Legends video game. If you want an easy listen, I would recommend this.

Solid Book for All, expanded character depth too

Genuinely a great read for League fans and people who know nothing about it. Kalista hadn't gotten much, if any recognition outside of a short story or two beforehand, and even then she was pretty much fully regarded as what she is now. The game frames her as the vengeful spirit first and a person second, though the book definitely frames her as a person first and foremost. There were genuine twists that even I, knowing her prior lore didn't expect. Even things hard to read/listen to. At times it got a lot more morbid than I expected, seriously. And the line delivery...

The line delivery takes this book to a whole other level. I will say I'm biased to Misty, Mara and Patty's work, though every VA, even the narrator knocked it out the park. Misty especially had some absolutely -gut wrenching- deliveries that made this, in my opinion, way more worth it than just reading the book. Hearing Kalista's wrathful, spectral voice in game to a tired, strained, hurting, exhausted, desperate or happy, sly, thankful, sincere, concerned human is genuinely moving and/or painful at times. Seriously. The dialogue and exchanges I imagine are good on paper, but I can't imagine it having nearly the same effect without the audio.

The one and only true gripe I have is with the wiring, particular at the final few chapters. In an ideal would, I'd have loved for the story to continue or touch in from the present (Must recent short story with Ledros), but I know the author probably had some limitations there, though it left off -well- before present/a bit before the Rune Wars, so those that don't play the game really are left in the dark as to what really became of her. It's touched in, but barely. The extent she changed from right after becoming a spirit to the present is still fairly different and hinted at at best, but even that I can look by.

What really was upsetting was the last few chapters. After Kalista's initial death, she became a side character at best. It made sense for before she came back as a spirit, though I've she had, the attention was completely changed to other characters and the world as a whole. Obviously, even presently she has no true, full resolution, though it felt unsatisfying with how short the portion of her coming back as a spirit and her descent was. It was done well and still very emotional, though it was her finale and a very brief and uneventful one in the grand scheme. There truly could have been more, be it monologue, in her emotion, in how are spiraled, what she did immediately following, though it's all treated as if she's a side character at the end making their last appearance, as opposed to the main character who widely had the focus of the entire novel, that we witnessed the highs, Lowe's, hopes, pain and fears of for an almost rushed conclusion for her. I do think the information that followed was necessary, though it's almost as if Kalista's story was left hanging without making it to the ledge to even hang over, sadly. Again, I do know that even now there's no conclusion for her, and it didn't need to reach the present, though I definitely feel like, with the character as a whole and how the book went, that she warranted a better conclusion/finale/last appearance, if not should have appeared more than once in the final chapters.

Still, aside from that, this was a really amazing novel. If you don't know a thing about League, you may still want to skim Kalista's bio to get a bit more "closure" on what became of her in the long-run, though it's not the worst ending, and the rest of the book, even the final portion with Kalista, brief as it may be, still makes this a very worthwhile and enjoyable, emotional book and easily one of my favorite game novels. Seriously, I really do recommend this, and especially the audiobook.

A fan boys dream!

Ruination is a remarkably well done audio book that makes you crave more lore. The setting and characters are easily relatable and get you hooked right away. The most impressive part is you do not necessarily need to be aware of league of legends characters prior to reading. However, this is chock-full of Easter eggs if you do!

Good classic story of betrayal with good world building

If ya like league’s lore and characters you’ll like this book it’s got great performances and a lot of nods to league character seeing as this is technically a prequel sorry that takes place many years before a lot of league characters are born or come into existence. That being said this is still a typical mad king ruins his nation type story but most of the characters are well written and well realized. Good listen with great voice acting from the league of legends characters reprising their roles for their characters.
