Rumpole on Trial

An excellent book. Very well read. Educational and very Funny. This is one of his best books so if you don't like it don't bother with any other Rumpole books.

Good short stories well done.

Timothy West is fantastic reading these books. He gets the accents perfect and really does a great job on timing. Not once did I think any of the characters where not quite right. Laughed out loud a number of times with John Mortimer's writing and although this production is a number of short stories, that are not too taxing on the old grey matter, they are enjoyable to listen to. Lovely to listen to whilst commuting home late at night or whilst enjoying that last glass of Port before bed time. Do yourself a favour and have an enjoyable time listening to these works.

A Rave Review with a Caveat Emptor

I love Rumpole. But I suspect my utter enjoyment has a lot to do with a near-total identification with him. In my chosen profession I’m the equivalent of an Old Bailey Hack, doing the jobs no one else wants to with, (if I may say so), a competence in which I take a modest pride. And, like Rumpole, I find the passing years leave me increasingly skeptical of the shiny new ways of doing business that so easily win the adherence of my juniors.

In other words, if you’re an up-and-coming true believer who embraces conventional industry wisdom, receives regular accolades from the higher-ups, and actually reads every email from corporate headquarters, beware. You probably won’t like Rumpole.

As with everything he reads, Timothy West is magnificent here.

these books are best listened to in order, but if you are looking for outside the order this is a good one.

Some of the best stories

Timothy West does excellently, though I wish Bill Wallis's incomparable characterization was available for all the Rumpole books. If the half-dozen I've tried, though, this is probably the strongest set of stories. Funny and full of Mortimer's keen (if jaundiced) observation of humans and their foibles.

Another Rumpole winner!

Rumpole is off the leash in this story! Liz Probert puts together his defense when Rumpole is about to be disbarred for telling off a judge!

Utterly Brilliant

Timothy West is excellent as Rumpole (so is Bill Wallis but he is a good character actor) and, of course, the stories are intriguing as full of wit. I would recommend all of these to listeners. It makes the morning drive into work fizz and sparkle like nothing else without dulling the senses. If you forget the name of the reader it really becomes Leo McKern. Yup it is that good

Superb writing and superlative narration

Whoever thought of asking Timothy West to narrate John Mortimer should be offered a knighthood.

A treat from first breath to the closing lines.

Not as good as Bill Wallis

I found this very hard going. The sound recording was poor, with voice levels dropping suddenly untll you couldn't hear them. While Timothy West is a good actor, I found him bland in this, and thought that there was little variation in characters except for the odd accent. Haven't listened to any other voice acting from him but don't feel that it is his milieu.

Voice level too variable

I only managed to listen to a short part of this book because Timothy West kept dropping his voice to a whisper so that I had trouble hearing it.

Fun - volume request

Really enjoyed the stories and the reading, would just like a louder recording volume as I listen while doing other things and couldn't always hear even with phone volume on full

Brilliant Entertainment

Timothy West perfectly brings Rumpole to life. Strangely I enjoyed the reading more than the full cast version. A wonderful escape in these troubled times.

Really good book read by Timothy West who for me will always be Rumpole. He even gets all the other voices just right. Highly recommended.

Thoroughly entertaining stories with the perfect narrator

Timothy West makes a superb Rumpole - great speed of narration and intonation. Became hooked very quickly and was quite sorry when it was over.

Satisfaction

Once more, a collection of engaging, entertaining and insightful stories, read superlatively by Timothy West, whose adoption of an accent or whose register raised, brings effectively into the monologue the whole panoply of Rumpole characters. Always more than simple entertainment, these stories allow the reader to enter into Rumpole's observations of life, the Law and the follies of human nature.
