Publisher's Summary

What's worse than a child with a magnifying glass, a garden full of ants, and a brilliant mind full of mischief?

Try Al, a well-meaning but impish artificial intelligence with the mind of a six-year-old and a penchant for tantrums. Hope Takeda, a lab assistant charged with educating and socializing Al, soon discovers that day care is a lot more difficult when your kid is an evolving and easily frightened A.I.

When Al manages to access the Internet and escape the lab days before his official unveiling, Hope and her team embark on a mission to contain him - before he causes any real trouble.

Soon the NSA is on Al's back, the US Army is fighting a brigade of mass-produced robots, and a wannabe cyberterrorist is looking to silence Al permanently. After months spent "raising" Al, Hope knows she's running out of time - and she's not sure she'll be able to protect him. Will she manage to control the unruly A.I. and quell a global crisis, or will Al outsmart them once and for all?

Other books are way better.

Any additional comments?

Overall--I liked his other books to include magic 2.0 and master of formalities. This book had a so-so story, but kind of too predictable. Spend your money elsewhere.

I expected more from Scott Meyer

What disappointed you about Run Program?

This book is a disappointment. Everything that made "off to be a wizard" so much fun is missing here. It was made worse by the narrator, who was not awful by any means other than she sort of killed all attempts of humor by narrating it all in a meekly serious way.
It took some effort for me to finish this book, so little I cared for the characters or the story.

Bit like a sneeze that does come out.

A lot of potential, but not much reward.

It's an ok book, but it feels like a story that could be so much more.
I could believe this was the first 1/3 of a kickass book, but it ends with little to no reward.

I wish it had a different narrator

I had to stop listening and will just get the paper version. The narration lacks the humor and sarcasm that the author intended. The narrator is good, but not suited to this book.

Hard to finish

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Lots of "X said Y", over and over. The AI didn't really seem plausible, and overall the story line felt trite.

What could Scott Meyer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Potentially bad behavior on the part of an AI is relevant to our time. Some research on how
Deep Mind and Watson are used would have gone a long way toward making this story richer. Besides the AI, having to listen to the character dialog was difficult.

Which scene was your favorite?

The last scene in the book.

Was Run Program worth the listening time?

No. I almost asked for a refund but thought it wouldn't be fair to Audible.

Great addition to Scott Meyer's library

I love A good sci-fi AI story, and Run Program really hit the spot. I have been reading Scott Meyer's work as it comes out and it was really nice to get a book in a different universe than his other work. I really enjoy his writing style, it is fun, often goofy, but always keeps on point, and the pages fly by.

The narration was great, Angela really brought the book to life.

When a book has me laughing aloud and clapping before its half way over, you know it's worth your time. Scott Meyer And Angela Dawe have done and excellent job!

so many pauses

line of dialog... pause... character said. very unnatural performance detracted from what was already an average story at best.

Want to give this story more stars but...

I really had a hard time finishing this audio book. the performance was OK but the underlying story was just, I don't know... I did not enjoy it.

unbelievable. childishly ignorant.

written by someone who knows preciously little about almost everything relevant to the story line. I got through chapter 17, barely, and then gave up. It wasn't getting any better

It could have been good "he said"

Am sure the story in this could have been really interesting however...

it's written like a script for TV, "he said, she said..." every sentence had to finish with "x said / y said" and it completely ruined it for me. it was so distracting that even liking some of the characters I didn't want to listen to this.

I like the Author i've enjoyed his other works but this one didn't work for me.

He said she said

I like the author and have read many of his other books; this is not his best but worth a listen.
The biggest issue is the same as with many audiobooks the " he said, she said" reputation. With many book now in multiple formats. Surely an author or editor can have a search function and re enter variety as it stand out like a sore thumb when you notice it

Fun but done before

The concept of AI going wild and trying to destroy the world has been done over and over. Despite that the characters and the writing was witty and at times funny which saves the book from its lack of originality. One issue was the repetitive he said / she said which became annoying over time. It could be the case that was due to the way the narrator read it. Also the narrator had a small lisp which prevented me from getting into the story completely. I would have given this 3.5 if there was such an option as the book was pretty decent.

"HE SAID!" narrator

unfortunately the narrator makes the somewhat repetitive he said she said, stand out more by almost shouting each time the "HE SAID!"

Good

I’m a fan of Scott Meyer’s Magic 2.0 series and when I had finished those books, I just had to listen to this. Overall, I enjoyed it - the story and narration were good, but I was a little disappointed with the writing, which I felt wasn’t quite up to Meyer’s usual standard.

Very entertaining twist on a familiar theme

A well constructed and narrated story. Why do we expect all AI's are evil and will drive us to extinction ?

10 Print “*” 20 goto 10

Is it the greatest book ever written? Nahhh. Is it an enjoyable, silly romp through America full of nerdy bits? Yep.
The reader wasn’t the best and definitely struggled with the male voices , perhaps a dual reader would have been better but she played the main protagonist well. It won’t win awards but it was a good listen whilst doing the housework.

Forgettable and predictable

Largely a paint by numbers story about an AI being misunderstood. Was interesting at the start but became painfully predictable. Wasn't with out its good moments but it really felt like it was just going through the motions. The 'voice of reason' character really just felt like they were there to make up the numbers.

Dawe's performance was solid.
