Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Not for me
Puerile nonsense about a girl from an East End murderous family who, via a few attacks, killings and attempted killings, ends up embroiled with New York Mafia gangsters. We are supposed to admire her every move.
Narrated in a broad East-End accent which, notwithstanding that it is appropriate to the subject, is somewhat overpowering and has shades of the narration from Jill Dawson's Lucky Bunny. If you are looking for such a thing and like your gangster stories then I'd suggest you go for Lucky Bunny (Well researched Great Train Robbery tale).
I must mention the swearing.... There is a great deal of it so this is not for the sensitive. I do not need to have my home filled with swearing and the repeated use of the C word is just too much. Offensive and unnecessary.
I think you should give this one a miss. My fault for being taken in by the two for one sale and I really should know better.

Almost laughable it is so bad
Long rambling story that just doesn't make sense. Characters are paper dolls with no depth or development and things happen out of nowhere, with no plot development either. Not helped by a narrator who really should not try to do accents. I'll be returning this one. Generously I have given two stars rather than one as I did make it past the first chapter - I was incredulous to hear how much more of a car crash it could become. I actually made it quite a way before I lost the will to live and eventually gave up.

Ok but corny
Ok overall, but found a lot of the story cringe worthy and corny for example why was there so much emphasis on a how attractive members of the families were. How many times do you have to mention the “blue steely eyes”.

Terrible don't buy
I definitely couldn't finish this book, in fact I struggled through the opening few chapters. I was totally amazed that this book had actually been published. So absolutely amateurish it was beyond belief. I wasn't sure wether the narrator was as amateurish as the author or as bored with reading it as I was in listening? Can't believe there are more books in this alleged series.

A brilliant listen. 4.5*
I'd seen a few reviews on this book, and quite a lot of hype about on social media and kept thinking, I really need to read these books.
I received a credit for audible and decided to get this book on audio. What a brilliant read/listen it turned out to be. the narration is first class, the voice change, the accents all just perfectly done. This mad it a really easy book to listen to and get lost in. I got through my housework without feeling that dreaded feeling about what is facing you. This book took my mind off everything I was doing, and my kindle went everywhere with me so I could listen, I flew through the ironing, I went on walks and all the while enjoyed having someone reading to me down my ear.
So what did I actually think of the book. Well it's first class, I just loved it. A brilliant story, fantastic characters and the start of a series I know I will certainly get through in no time.
This is the second book I've read by Kerry Barnes the first one I read was 'Cruel Secrets' and I was seriously impressed with the writing. This book is just as impressive, and it doesn't take long before you are lost in the pages, loving and hating characters, Kerry Barnes has done a cracking job of engaging you with these characters.
We follow the life mainly of Francesca, from her growing up as a child, a twin, to her becoming the woman that she does, a very ruthless woman.
Francesca is a brilliant character and one I know I'm going to enjoy reading about in future books. Believable and likeable I found myself rooting for her in all she did.
I can see a difference in the writing in this book from the later book I have read, so I know the writing just get's better and I'm looking forward to seeing that in the next books in this series.
If East end gangland books are your thing then you'll bloody love this book. Kerry Barnes is certainly going to up there with some of the best writers in this genre, and I look forward to seeing her success. I can't wait for more books.
