Story
Joe takes his first step into exile, and is promptly unable to breathe. This new Zone has a higher concentration of power, magnitudes denser. His first task is to survive, but mere survival is the least of his concerns. The Zone he has landed on has been in a state of constant war for thousands of years, a tug of war between the Elven and Dwarven societies. Not choosing a side is the same as declaring both to be your personal enemy. Though he is resistant, Joe reluctantly decides to go with the group he thinks will help him grow the most.

After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation. Publisher's Summary
Enemies emerge everywhere. Stagnation starts seeming standard. Results require Ruthlessness.
Joe has been moving deeper into his study of ritual magic and further away from his combat team. He's learning more and more, but more often than not needs to choose between his research and squad leadership. Improving the town is a huge help to the guild, and they have been pushing to increase their power.
Their rapid increases have not gone unnoticed. The guild receives an ultimatum, delivered by assassins and signed with blood. If they continue to accrue power and fame, each and every person with a grievance against the guild will come to smash the town back to square one.
With tensions coming to a head, all Joe wants to do is leave it all behind and reach the next area. He flatly refuses the guild when they ask him to devise lethal options to use against the gathering army, but when the time comes...even Joe is unsure if he'll step into the limelight and show everyone exactly how ruthless he can be.

Why do they have to ruin a good thing?
Luke Daniels is a very good narrator. The low score is for the blooper reel at the end. Blooper reels are fine but I have children that listen to this series. Now I have to restrict them from listening to the book on their own because someone thought it was a good idea to add a bunch of curse words at the end of a book that didn't have any.

been waiting for this book for a while.
This one was great. Still can't get over the voice changes from the previous narrator being changed to what they are now, but it was still good. I'm glad the author finally came back to the main story as I didn't find the side stories appealing. If you're a fan of the series, you won't be disappointed but if you're new to the series then alot of subtle hints will go over your head and you most likely won't like it because its confusing to you. Would definitely recommend and will be listening to it again for any information I might have missed.
My only gripe that isnt really a gripe, is that in classic Dakota fashion I find my self so frustrated going from chapter to chapter because he leaves just that little bit of suspense in the more high anxiety places that make you want to both return the book and skip ahead to the next chapter to see what happens. Only to leave you at the end of the book wanting to listen to the next one immediately.
Thanks Dakota, keep em coming.

It makes me sad
TLDR: The story is good, better than Raze, but the narration has gotten worse.
I liked the story, this book felt more cohesive than Raze did, and fleshed out the world by adding new skills, and explaining some of the deities (with references back to the divine dungeon). Joe can still be kind of off putting, random, and jerk for no reason, which makes him harder to like, but that’s reasonably well explained and works out towards the end.
Somehow Luke Daniels has gotten worse since he took over narrating for Krout. It’s already extremely jarring to switch narrators, and I get that was likely a funding/producers choice or whatever, but it’s no excuse for such a poor performance. Luke can be great like in the iron Druid chronicles, or Magic 2.0, but this series has been phoned in. There’s a lot of mispronounced words, the character accents slip at times, no effort at all was made to keep any sort of audio consistency with the first 2 books.
Also there’s a blooper reel at the end, with no warning or intro, I thought my file had corrupted or my phone was breaking.

aggravating.
the auther keeps throwing so much crap and negative situations only at the MC over and over again he never gets ahead and the moment he does everything changes and it becomes a waste or gets stolen by some gimmick the author threw out. Seems like the author loves treating the mane character like crap and the only thing the MC can do is continuously fail for random reasons that come out of the wood work for the sole reason that the MC got slightly ahead. all these other chosen of deities don't go through this crap only the MC. I will def not get the next one this one was so aggravating.

Story was good but the narrator wasn't.
If you're thinking of getting this then you probably already know what to expect with the story, but the narrator; for me anyway, made this hard to listen to. His inflection was all over the place, and very inconsistent.
The book itself is consistent with the previous books and worth enjoying if you enjoyed the story up till this point.

Thrusting codpieces and evil bankers
Another great book in the series.
Being exceptional can often be a problem when that exceptionalism creates envy and jealousy among those who want what you work for. Joe finds himself having to face those who want to keep him and his guild stagnant and powerless as they face their greatest challenge yet. Instead of accepting their probable doom both Joe and his buddies work ever harder to be the best they can be and help their guild and friends rise to the occasion.
Love how bit by bit we’re getting to see a connection between all of the author’s books both new and old. His creation of what is essentially an extended universe gives a nod to his fans that have followed him since the early books. There is no pandering though so it’s still an approachable world that he is creating for those who’ve yet to read his other series.
I’ve been wondering for a while what his inclusion of so many puns and dad jokes reminded me of and it finally came to me. For those of you who remember the Xanth Series, much like Piers Anthony you’ll find his tongue and cheek use of puns to be a fun reminder of how puns can be fun even while groaning inside.
Luke Daniels provides another excellent performance and conveys the intent and range of emotions that is needed for the characters. My only problem is that he voices some of my faVorite characters and I’m sometimes picturing some of those characters while listening to the book. Not his fault, probably mine for liking so many of the books he voices.
Overall great experience and definitely recommend to those who are fans of LitRPG/GameLit/Fantasy/Puns and Coffee.

hard work again
From my top series, down to ok. The reason is the painful Luke Daniels telling. unsure why they changed a few books back. He has done some good work, and bad before, this series is not for him.
I can just about listen to it. I did stop for a few months. tho next time I may just use a text to speech app.
Two stars is a good score for this.

Haaaa. For crying out loud.
Book 4 and Book 5 kill this series. With book 4, the main character had changed, significantly. So much so that book 4 was all over the place. It was an adjustment, and the story suffered seriously for it, but I accepted that and chalked it up to the new narrator's artistic take combined with the more fragmented writing style. If that was all it was, it'd have been an adjustment but the lore and various plotlines would have carried it through.
Book 5. My lord. Book 5. The main character is now a complete joke, making zero sense and acting sagely with zero combat ability and a serious debuff for the first half of the story-- doing zero about it. The second half though is even worse.
** Spoiler alert. **
Combines all his combat spells and becomes melee? Has a week after combining his spells and doesn't learn any new spell before entering a divine dungeon? The frack.
The story makes zero sense. Zero. There is no longer any logic in this series and the lore cannot carry it through.

not as good as previous books in series
As usual the performance was great but I found this story difficult to listen to, this is in contrast to the first few books. I don't finish this feeling: "what happens next?" but rather "meh!"

another great link in the chain
if you have read the other related books then you know what you are in for mostly. there were some surprises that I really enjoyed and I love figuring out the links to the other books.
I love Luke's performance in anything he narrates but I fine it hard to go from one voice actor to another but I am over it now. it would not be so bad but I have we listened to the first book recently it was in my mind

Another Outstanding book.
This is another fantastic book from Dakota Krout.
I enjoyed every second of it. The story continues and takes some great turns some expected some not. I can not wait for the next book. Pretty sure it will be called Exile.
I did feel Luke performance in some places got a bit silly and over the top and did make Joe sound a bit of a clown but aside from that great job.
I would like to know whats going on with Earth, that was barely mention in book 4 i think and now thing...?! seems a bit odd.

only 1 grumble
The narrator did a great job (except for the pronunciation of bifrost).
my main grumble about this was the forced way in which it seemed that the MC was driven to focus on stat training because of titles/debuffs that no one else had heard of and only 1 other person was noted as having affected. a crudely used plot devices to force things along in my opinion ... plus their over reliance on Joe, can't they come up with a solution and sort their own stuff out?

Ritual Goodness
This book meshes well with the previous books and even links to the divine dungeon series (diety of bards lol).
It brings back characters from previous books and shows how they progress as time goes on.
This book continues with amazing adventures, silly puns and a fantastic story progression. Im hooked and need more!!!!
p.s. the bloopers are hilarious! It was a shock at first with the change in narrators but luke does a fantastic job.

best one yet
after the 4th book I was concerned the quality might be dropping or the magic of it all fading, but I'm glad to say that this one is the best one yet and changed my mind. the pacing is better, the rest a few moments that will have you laughing out loud, and a few well set up puns and jokes for good measure. if you've come this far definitely continue, I'm curious to see where this goes in the future

It was okay
At moments it was stressful to listen to the story, at others it was enjoyable. I hope that the Author will improve again in the next books.

Best so far
With an exciting story full of progression, humour, and action, coupled with the incredible narration of Luke Daniels, Ruthless cements itself as the strongest entry in the series to this point. I don't know how I am going to wait for the next one.

Best book in the series so far!! The pacing of the book is perfect. There’s so much progress yet so little at the same time.

A Satisfying Chapter
I loved it. It's a great mix of satisfying current storylines and moving to the next set. Did Luke Daniels not realise Hansel is Hans or was he just trying for a new voice? Either that or Hans has REALLY cracked over the millenia. Given what happened here I am hoping the next Wolfman Warlock title comes out soon.
As for now I think I'm gonna have another listen and take a shot every time the title comes up.
