Publisher's Summary

Book seven in the Gaunt's Ghosts series.

Saint Sabbat has returned, and she is being hunted by the deadliest of assassins. Gaunt's Ghosts must fight to protect her - but can they defend against treachery from within?

Listen to it because...it's the culmination of a massive story arc that sees tragedy strike even as the Sabbat Worlds Crusade is given new hope with the reappearance of the Saint herself. Mysticism and warfare collide, with compelling results.

The story: with the future of the Sabbat Worlds campaign balanced on a knife edge, new hope arises in the form of Saint Sabbat herself, reincarnated to lead the Imperium to victory against the dark forces of Chaos. The living saint calls for Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and the Tanith First to be her guardians. Doubting that she is who she claims, Gaunt must discover the truth while fending off enemy troops and lethal assassins. But treachery within the Ghosts will not only threaten the mission, but rip the Tanith asunder.

Written by Dan Abnett, narrated by Toby Longworth.

Another book finished within a week

What am I going to say that I haven't before? Masterful narration, engaging storytelling; again Dan throws a curve ball which Toby knocks out of the park. I wish you best of luck not shedding a tear at the end of this narration.

Gutrenchingly tragic yet masterfully written

Another fantastic addition to the Gaunt's Ghost Series. Solid Military Scifi set in the grimdarkness of the 40k universe. Great descriptive language will once again drag you back into the unending struggles of the Tanith 1st as they are once again pushed beyond the limits. With an end that builds up to a twist you will not be prepared for! Justice is done, horrendous prices are paid, and the war moves ever on.

spoilers included

I loved the series, but personally I have a love/hate relationship with this particular book...... spoilers below...

the book is well written as person Dan's usual standards, but I hated it because of the demise of Colm Corbec...

to me, the ghosts were just a little bit different from this book onwards.... there's just something missing without his presence....

It's a solid addition to the series!

Toby Longworth really brings the story to life, and Dan Abnett really nails the sense of stacked odds in this one, 10/10 I recommend.

A nice end to this arc of The Ghosts

This arc in the Ghosts story ends with a bang. There are payoffs to several threads started in earlier novels as well as the end of some character arcs. Mkvenner gets a bit more attention here leading up to the next important character arc for him. Soric, Colbec, Harkins, Milo, Kolea, and Lijah Fething Cuu all have some time for their arcs and threads. Minor characters like Sanian, Innokenti, Pater Sin, and Lugo continue, and in some cases, end their stories in this novel.

I do think the novel could use some more pages to tie things up since the novel is busy. There is a major planetary war going on, ties up the larger Crusade, and storylines for many characters in this novel. The ending felt a little rushed but much of the buildup seemed well paced. I do not think The Nine got enough time to enforce the level of threat they represented.

Last thing, Mkoll continues to shine and he makes short work of an opponent who he begrudgingly compliments... right before he demonstrates that, while he was good, Mkoll is better. That quick scene was fun to me. Mkoll fan club should be a thing.

Superb

I had read this book on my kindle earlier and found it touching and almost heartbreaking at times (not something you associate with Warhammer) but listening to Toby Longworth narrate outstandingly yet again made it even more emotive

Great story - narration back to its best

I've listened to all the Inquisition books and all the Gaunt's Ghosts up to this point. Dan Abnett is great as always, I felt Toby was going through the motions a bit on the last two, maybe a bit of 40k overload?? But with Sabbat Martyr he's back to his best, which is great because I can't imagine listening to anyone read these books. I can't wait for the next book in the series, but please don't rush Toby, wait till you're ready to give it your all, and if you could do Titanicus too that would be great.

Great stuff, sucky release schedule.

Great story and magnificent read by Toby Longworth.
Too bad they won't publish the books in proper sequence to prevent spoilers from later stories they have allready released here.
