Story
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Poor Narration
What would have made Sacred Stone better?
A different narrator would have enhanced this listening experience. Scott Brick is so much better. I would have ennjoyed this book if he had been the narrator.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Some words were mispronounced. Vocal inflection was very distracting.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Clive Cussler is my favorite author. His stories are always a good read.
Any additional comments?
Scott Brick is so much better. His narration would have made this a good listen.

Scott Brick, where are you?
This is the second Cussler audiobook I purchased that was narrated by someone other than Scott Brick I couldn’t get past the first chapter listening to J. Charles. I need to be more careful and check to see who narrates these books from now on.
Mr. Cussler, please don’t let anyone narrate you’re books other than Scott Brick.

Not like books 3 onward
I really like the series and look forward to new books. I started at book 3 since earlier books were not available until the last month. I did not like the narrator at all and found it hard to finish. The story occurs almost totally off the Oregon which is the focal point of the story lines going forward. I am very happy I started at book 3 as if I had started with1 or 2, I would not have purchased others.

Not Cussler's best - if he really wrote it
What disappointed you about Sacred Stone?
The narrator's voice is not in fitting with the type of characters and the efforts to create different voices for different characters is so poor that is makes you uncomfortable to listen to it. The character from Arizona has a Texas-sounding accent. None of our Oregon heroes sound tough and smart anymore. The story lacks Cussler's customary zing and wittiness. I have read an listened to many many Cussler books and would rate every one of them a 5 in all respects; however, I had to stop listening to this one half way through. I just couldn't take it. You get none of the traditional Cussler suspense and constant sense of action. I question whether he even wrote it.
Has Sacred Stone turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of J. Charles?
Scott Brick or anyone with a tougher sound. Our heroes sound like school teachers or something. Much to soft for characters of this type.
What character would you cut from Sacred Stone?
the retired author - that was lame. That is one of the things, other than the poor quality of the story, that makes me think Cussler didn't write this.

By Cussler...doesn't seem so
I've read almost 40 books by Clive Cussler and if if had started with this book I would not have read another one. Two major things wrong with the book in my opinion 1) Narration and 2) Story.
Narration: J Charles may be ok at narrating some type of book ( I know not what) but not THIS type of book. He can't do accents, he can't add drama and all of his characters sound like cartoon characters. Several have low,low voices like a 5th grade boy would use when trying to sound like a grownup. I'll not buy another book narrated by this person because he detracts from the book and adds nothing. I see that he has narrated more than one Clive Cussler book these are books that sadly I'll not be buying.
Story: This book just didn't seem up to the standards, mostly due to narration but also it had just weird cliches in it ("how now brown cow"??? come on) that just don't seem to live up to the Cussler standards. This is a moderately long book, 12 hours, but still lacked many details that could have been added to make it more interesting and more complete. If I write more in detail I risk writing spoilers, and that is something I do not want to do.

Mangled
I've read most every Cussler book and listened to his audible versions for the last five years or so. The Oregon Files series being the most exciting to me. How this version got past quality control is beyond me. It's as if they contractually had to release an audible version and gave us a purposely stilted and poorly performed book as an F You to some lawyer some where. Even if the producer or editor were inept I can't believe the narrator agreed to continue. To me this would be a career ender. The story is cheesy and full of cliches like most C.C.'s books but my God, the delivery. Aghhh!
