Most of the world remembers Crazy Horse as a peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But to his fellow Lakota Indians, he was a dutiful son and humble fighting man who, with valor, spirit, respect, and unparalleled leadership, fought for his people's land, livelihood, and honor. In this fascinating biography, Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota Indian, creates a vibrant portrait of the man, his times, and his legacy.

We are but a few generations removed from millennia spent living in intimate contact with the natural world and in close commune with ancestral spirits. Who we are and who we think we are is rooted in historical connections with those who came before us and in our relationships with the land and the sentient natural world. When we wander too far from our roots, our ancestors and kin in the natural world call us home, sometimes with gentle whispers and sometimes in loud voices sounding alarms.

Story
The greatest contribution of the ancient shamans to modern healing is the understanding that in the course of any life we are liable to suffer soul loss - the loss of parts of our vital energy and identity - and that to be whole and well, we must find the means of soul recovery. Moss teaches that our dreams give us maps we can use to find and bring home our lost or stolen soul parts. He shows how to recover animal spirits and ride the windhorse of spirit to places of healing and adventure in the larger reality.

In this moving narrative, we travel through the lands of the Lakota and the Ojibwe, where we encounter a strange little girl with an unnerving connection to the past, a forgotten asylum that history has tried to hide, and complex, unforgettable characters.

VERY Disappointing.
I've never purchased a book where the author refused to give you information and told you to look it up on your own. I was very disappointed by the author's attitude. The recording was very poor also as I had to constantly adjust the volume as it seemed that the author pulled away from the microphone and was very difficult to hear. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this book.

Some positive information
Is there anything you would change about this book?
More accurate information
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
More accurate information and a better command of the Lakota language
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Some of the information was good
Any additional comments?
Some of the information is positive. Some is incorrect. While my ancestry is Mi'kmaq, I grew up among the Plains tribes. I've been blessed to have Apsaalooke, Lakota, Piikani and Salish elders and healers as mentors. One thing they all have had in common is that they absolutely detest the word "shaman." Also, I take issue with her stating that purple is a color that brings one down. It uplifts me. But, then, it's my favorite color and any shade makes me happy. I was amazed that she believes in Jesus Christ, but doesn't believe that we need a mediator. And, what is most commonly known as bear root or osha (pronounced o-shaw) is a healing plant for certain serious ailments. It's always been rare and, at least in the northern plains, only allowed to be in possession of healers. New agers have depleted it's availability even further. I would not suggest trying to harvest it unless you absolutely know what you're doing because it looks very much like its relatives which are extremely toxic, such as hemlock.

I should have investigated this book more.
What disappointed you about Sacred Voices?
A lot of random new-age ramblings. I doubt even new age enthusiasts would find much of value.
What could Wolf Moondance have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This book appears to have no basis. It sounds like it was just made up on the fly.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It taught me to be more careful and research books better before I put down good money to buy them.
