Publisher's Summary

Moving to remote Shetland has been unsettling enough for consultant surgeon Tora Hamilton; even before the gruesome discovery she makes one rain-drenched afternoon...Deep in the peat soil of her field she is shocked to find the perfectly preserved body of a young woman, a gaping hole where her heart has been brutally removed and three rune marks etched into her skin. The marks bear an eerie resemblance to carvings Tora has seen all over the islands, and she quickly uncovers disturbing links to an ancient legend. But as Tora investigates she is warned by the local police, her boss, and even her husband, to leave well alone.

And even though it chills her to the bone to admit it...something tells her their concern isn't genuine.

Not without flaws, but exciting

I've been on a bit of an SJ Bolton binge.

Like all her other novels, this one is very well plotted. No matter how you feel about her main characters, it's almost impossible to fault Bolton for her mystery construction. This is by far her greatest strength and Sacrifice is no exception.

Bolton is also a creator of very interesting and rather complex heroines. You either love them or hate them, but you can't fault her for making them superficial. To one extent or another, I find they all end up doing some pretty stupid, unaccountable things in service of the plot, which tends to erode the believability of them as characters.

This also happens in Sacrifice to a greater extent than it does in some of her other novels. And if you are one of those people who doesn't like 'horsey' women, then this novel might drive you crazy.

That being said, it was a compelling listen and the central mystery is fresh and very creepy. So, despite a few flaws, it was very satisfying.

An excellent if disturbing read

This book certainly has pace. It is the second of Bolton's that I have read and the second to be incredibly creepy. You do sometimes find yourself wondering if so many things could happen to one person but, as each incident can be explained within the plotlines of the story, it only serves to keep you more on the edge of your seat. There are still times when you find yourself thinking it's all rather improbable but it didn't take away from the enjoyment - if one can say that about a book that has you anxious from start to finish!

A bit scary Mary I would say

I so so enjoyed this book and found the narrative fine and didnt take from the book. The story is quite far fetched in parts but it is so good I didnt care. There are lots of twists and turns and when you think you have it all worked out it changes direction. I will be looking for more books from this author. Recommended.

a narrator can make or break a story.

I looked forward to reading this thriller set in Shetland. from the off the narrator killed it. her clipped tones didn't suit and her emphasis confused. Her method reminded me of a less than adequate primary school teacher. There was no feeling, no emotion.
It's unfortunate because I'm sure I would have enjoyed the story but I just had to return it.

Oh dear! Disappointing narration....

I've only just downloaded this, a few chapters in but really struggling. The narrator has a good voice BUT not for this book. She sounds like she should be reading Agatha Christie, not a modern crime thriller.

The character is supposed to be 33, the narrator sound 63!! And is also incredibly well spoken which detracts from the believability of the story. What a disappointment :-(

As for the story... I'm not gripped. But then again, I'm struggling to get in to it... I hope it improves...

Had to listen to the whole thing

Wonderful scary story which held my attention!
So many things hidden then revealed, well written and read with outcomes that I did not guess, which is a first. Thanks

Narrator is wrong for this book

I have listened to many of Sharon Bolton’s books and have been blown away by the amazing story lines, characters and the narrators.
I had delayed listening to this book because of the reviews regarding the narration and unfortunately they have been spot on - the main character sounds in her sixty’s instead of 30’s and even the emphasis on certain words and sentences is unfortunately very grating.
That being said it is testament to Sharon’s skills as a writer that I couldn’t stop listening! She is a fabulous talent and I adore her books.

Started well...

The sacrifice was in allowing the narrator to read this book.
Good story, but over long, dragging toward the end.

Good Story

Enjoyable story, I haven't read/listened to a plot like this one before. I found it hard to stop listening once I had got into the story. I would recommend this to people who like crime novels. The narrators impersonation of Shetland accents was annoying until you got used to it, fortunately the main character did not have a Shetland accent.

Great story, not so great narration

This was my first Sharon Bolton and will definitely be reading more.
The only real issue was the narrator. Her voice was too old for the characters and her emphasis made it sound as if the characters were bored.

obviously a first novel

I love this authors books but this is so obviously a first novel.
She even admits she wrote the story before she had even visited the Shetlands
