When climate activist Greta Thunberg was 11, her parents Malena and Svante, and her little sister Beata, were facing a crisis in their own home. Greta had stopped eating and speaking, and her mother and father had reconfigured their lives to care for her. Desperate and searching for answers, her parents discovered what was at the heart of Greta’s distress: her imperiled future on a rapidly heating planet. Steered by Greta’s determination to understand the truth and generate change, they began to see the deep connections between their own suffering and the planet’s.

Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Cornelia Fort was already in the air. At 22, Fort had escaped Nashville’s debutante scene for a fresh start as a flight instructor in Hawaii. She and her student were in the middle of a lesson when the bombs began to fall, and they barely made it back to ground. Still, when the US Army Air Forces put out a call for women pilots to aid the war effort, Fort was one of the first to respond. She became one of just over 1,100 women from across the nation to make it through the Army’s rigorous selection process and earn her silver wings.

Trent Preszler thought he was living the life he always wanted, with a job at a winery and a seaside Long Island home, when he was called back to the life he left behind. After years of estrangement, his cancer-stricken father had invited him to South Dakota for Thanksgiving. It would be the last time he saw his father alive. Preszler’s only inheritance was a beat-up wooden toolbox that had belonged to his father, who was a cattle rancher, rodeo champion, and Vietnam War Bronze Star Medal recipient. This family heirloom befuddled Preszler.

Publisher's Summary
This program is read by the author and includes original music and a bonus conversation with Amy Ray of Indigo Girls.
From the Grammy-nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song.
Mary Gauthier was 12 years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day.
Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination.
In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her audiobook celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.
A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Essentials
"Generous and big-hearted, Gauthier has stories to tell and worthwhile advice to share." (Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much Is True)
"Gauthier has an uncanny ability to combine songwriting craft with a seeker’s vulnerability and a sage’s wisdom.” (Amy Ray, Indigo Girls)

I have to say at the outset that I am a straight male songwriter. That really doesn’t matter. Mary’s biography end guidance through this history meant the world to me. I cried. I laughed I wrote. I was inspired. And I will never be quite the same songwriter I was before.

I Soaked it Up
When songs, or writers, or random seemingly unimportant situations touch my heart, I like to soak up the message that’s freely being given. “Saved by a Song” by Mary Gauthier is the epitome of just this. As a fellow adoptee, a grateful alcoholic in recovery, an author of my own memoir, and a lover of the power of music, so much of Mary’s story resonates with me. I appreciate this gift.

Wow! More than I expected.
I downloaded this audiobook because I am new to songwriting. I knew of Mary Gauthier, but was not overly familiar with her music. I expected something akin to Jeff Tweedy’s “How to Write One Song” (another fantastic read and listen), but I got much more.
This is more than a book about songwriting. It’s also about being human and all the insecurities, faults, and obstacles that come along with that. It’s also about overcoming all that to find a voice that’s truly your own.
The audiobook allows you to hear it straight from her lips. You also get to hear many of her songs as demos, etc. That’s an added bonus.
In short, this audiobook is a triumph, not unlike Mary Gauthier herself. Listening was a privilege, and only served to foster my respect and admiration for her as both a person and an artist. Rock on, Mary!

I'm forever grateful that this book was written
I'm forever grateful that this book was written. Mary reminds us that music is not just for professionals, nor should it be. she is full of hard-hitting life changing quotes like, "If you bring forth what is in you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is in you, it will destroy you." she has a way of humanizing what can seem to be difficult or intimidating, which creates hope and audacity in the reader.

Oh, wow
I suspect that the sight of a grown man looking a bit tearful in the street is not an everyday occurrence. This book accompanied me on my walk to and from work over the course of a week, and all I can say is where’s the advisory? I have not been so emotionally invested in a tale in many years. It literally brought tears to my eyes on several occasions, and I thought that I was familiar with the broader aspects of the story. This is essential listening for anyone interested in the human condition, tragedy and redemption, or just good old folk’n’roll. Get it. You’ll be a better person for the time spent with Mary Gauthier. The accompanying snippets of song really add to the listening experience.

Phenomenal
This book is an absolute masterpiece.
Mary so generously shares so much about the craft of writing, offering up examples from her own work.
Beyond gifting the world her stories through song, this book goes deeper into the stories behind the songs. It’s so raw and deeply human. I’ve laughed, cried, taken notes, and sung along.
Sometimes the audio versions of books lose a little magic. Not so here. In this, the audio is the perfect way to enjoy it. Mary’s own voice brings so much depth to it. And you get the added joy of the songs being sung.
I’ll still buy a hard copy for the shelf and to scribble on. But this was the perfect way to enjoy it first. 5 stars. Every moment is beautiful
